my take on this... sm

My take on it is this:

1.  You are just doing your job.  You are not condoning the activity, you are not pushing people to abort, you are simply typing a medical note.  If you didn't type it, someone would.  You are on the backend of things.  We probably type things we don't necessarily agree with every day.  I personally have typed patients whose families have kept them on life support for extended periods of time, which I don't agree with.  My job however is to accurately type the report.  As much as I don't like what they are doing, there really isn't anything I can do from my end.  By refusing to type it, I would just be passing it on to someone else, which slows up the process of transcription, and with the state of this career, probably putting all of our jobs at risk.  After all, computers have no feelings and overseas Transcriptionist probably don't even know English well enough to know what they are talking about.

2.  We never know the circumstances of some procedures.  Sometimes we are given the impression that something is a standard run of the mill abortion, when actually it is the termination of a non-viable pregnancy.  I have known people IRL who have had abortions for whatever reason (young, dumb, etc.) and I have also known people who have been faced with the gut wrenching decision of aborting a baby that they very much love and want, but has a horrible defect that is not compatible with life.  I feel compassion for anyone who has had an abortion, and I pray that they have the strength to get through it.  I try not to judge when I get reports like this, because we often don't know the backstory (rape, incest, birth defect, etc).

If you are of the praying sort, maybe you could just say a little prayer when you get those reports, for the doctor, the mother, the baby... whatever.

*****Oh, and just FTR, I am pro-choice, and when I have gotten reports like that, it is still hard.  I don't think it is easy for anyone, no matter what your beliefs.
