Not picking on you, but what makes these abbreviations "dangerous?" They have been used for decades - why all of a sudden are they considered a danger?

Every place I have worked for the last several years has insisted on not using these and I follow the formats and instructions of the people I work for, but I sure don't understand what all the fuss is about.
