In Reply to: To Sunshine - I think it is a terrific idea to get a consultant.

Thanks for the vote!  I just can't believe people can be so rude.  Thanks for the advice and,oh, I am a woman.  I thought the sensitivity would have given it away! LOL

Yea - someone agrees with me
I have thought that more times than not.  Again contracts might be important to some but to me they are not.  Had them when I first started, agreement/contract and found that either side could still quit due to "cause" or "no cause", non payment could still cause  you go to court with or without a contract and it was simpler without.   I pick up the dictation, do the work, return it in my timely manner, invoice once a month, they pay within 3 days and that goes on for now 18 years with some accounts.   But to pay all money for things I can do, advertising, mailings, writing of agreements if that is what you want even before you land the account -- cannot see it.   But again to each their own.

As an IC you are in business for yourself - you are your own company. This has responsibility- Think about it - if the people you worked for closed their office and had no coverage to dispense work, you would be out of work for a week -you do the work for them so you need to have coverage - it is the professional thing to do - and shows them you handle your business well.

Another item that I notice so often on this board - very very often - is the conversation about specific pay rates - most I feel are exaggerated, and I find it unprofessional to talk about any salary - but you also leave open the possibility of others underbidding you on your projects etc. I think keeping what you earn to an approximation is more professional. I have to tell you that I have gotten many private clients telling me they check the boards 0- this and others for what they should be paying and when I go just a point or 1/2 point lower they think it is great. So if you all want to continue - be my guest, but you open up a can of worms with potential clients. I do not know of any other business that would give up their rates to the open market so freely.
I believe the world agrees that you don't need kids. You probably can't have any. Yeahhhhhhh

Idol chat board agrees - Paula was
wacked last night.
Here are rules from grammarbook.com and it agrees with BOS on the caps with apostrophe
Rule 8 The plurals for capital letters and numbers used as nouns are not formed with apostrophes.
Examples

She consulted with three M.D.s.
BUT
She went to three M.D.s' offices.
The apostrophe is needed here to show plural possessive.
She learned her ABCs.
the 1990s not the 1990's
the '90s or the mid-'70s not the '90's or the mid-'70's
She learned her times tables for 6s and 7s.

Exception: If the apostrophe is needed to avoid confusion, use it and be consistent within a sentence.

Example: Her 0's and 6's looked similar.

Consultant

A consultant will cost a lot of money.  Who do you work for now and how do you get their work?   Just have to be flexible, be able to do tapes or digital, pick up and delivery, printing, etc.  Just gotta get out there and market your business and yest it might take several mailings as you gotta catch their eye when they are looking for someone.  If they have someone doing their business right now you have to be able to offer them a reason for switching -- and I don't mean an introductory price at a ridiculous amount -- service is it.  Point out why you are different.  But be prepared to back up what you promise,  there won't be any vacations or days off in the future unless you have a back-up when first starting out.  The offices are not usually understanding as a service with sick kids, you being sick, husband walking out and leaving you or even a death at times.  Well maybe not that bad but at first they will ask for a lot and you gotta be prepared to give it until you prove yourself.  But again, gals, it will take more than one mailing, you gotta get your name out there and sell yourself.   Do it every 6 to 8 weeks at first.  Stop by and hand deliver your flyers/brochures after a first mailing.  Drop off some pens with your name on them.  But you have to me a marketing person, customer service rep, manager, business owner and employee to make it on your own.   Good luck.  I just cannot justify spending money on something that I can do myself but if you can, look in the yellow pages under Business Consultant but be prepared to spend more on them than you would on an attorney.

consultant
Thank you so much for answering.  I work for a national company now.  My biggest concerns are how to be set up for the delivering of transcription if its a not a pick up and drop off situation and how do I go about getting the contract written up?  YOu can e-mail.  I would very much appreciate it.  Thank you once again!
consultant
I think it might be worth checking out.
independent consultant

good morning!  Someone had posted information about a good consultant for an independent MT business.  Would you be so kind to e-mail me the information.  I have been looking into starting my own business and would love to get off on the right track.  I know some people don't work with contracts but I would like to cover myself.  Plus I think its just good to have one.  I feel its just like opening any other type of business and it would be good to know there is someone to talk with about it.  Once again, thank you for your time.

consultant for IC business
HI all.  Someone had posted on this board that they knew of a good consultant for getting started as an independent set up business.  Would you please be so kind to email me info on this?  Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
I want to be a consultant to attorneys, to show them where
.  I'd like to reduce the allowable error rate for patients like you and me.
Writer and PT marketing consultant

Bingo. A good tax consultant
Thank goodness I have a good one that knows what to write off, etc.  Misconceptions of IC in this field is very common.  I also do not agree with an IC being assigned work whether it be a certain amount of minutes or to work certain hours.  As an IC you have the choice to take the work and transcribe it or not.  As an employee, however, you may be required to transcribe a certain amount of work.  These MTSOs what their cake and eat it too.  They want to write off your pay as a "subcontractor", because they are the contractor, plus expect a certain quota.
FINAL CONSULTANT POST

You are right Fingers/Carole, I am not an MT.  I am a consultant for many big businesses.  All businesses are the same, in it to make money.  The bottom line is that the MT biz is going downhill consistently.  Those of you who are happy with your jobs, benefits, pay scale.... GREAT!  But what about the tons that are not.  Do you not care for your fellow American!!  It won't be long and you will ALL have the same problem.  Pay cut and fixes other VR and off-shore work.  I did not come here to start any war, only to open eyes, that it is imperative to stop the AAMT type who do nothing for you and organize yourselves to get accomplished what is necessary to keep your pay and benefits going up, NOT down and out of the country or to VR with you doing the corrections.  There is nothing wrong with making things easier with VR, but you should still get paid for your expertise while transitioning to this.  VR will NEVER be able to take the place of the qualified MT.

I hope in some small way I did something good here.  My intentions were in the right place.  I wish you ALL well and full pockets!!

Yeah, yeah, that should be "your work..."

Yeah, baby, yeah.
We are here for the long haul.
Oh, yeah!

I understand where you're coming from.  The respect is just not there anymore.  Everyone in this business has heard for years about how voice recognition and EMRs are going to replace us all, which I just don't buy.  I work for a national on a difficult account with many ESLs, and it generates lots of work.  Every summer we have problems keeping up with turnaround but the management has yet to come up with a solution that actually works consistently.  I suspect it's a combination of MTs having kids home from school during the day now, vacations being taken, and people not working their schedules,  but most of all I think it's just plain burnout - we deserve to enjoy the summer too.  Last summer I worked so much to the point that I think I did substantial damage, and my body just cannot take it anymore (been at it for about 20 years, the last 10 years of it steady).  The powers that be fail to understand that we are not machines!

Oh yeah
Or when you are trying to sleep and in your mind you are dictating to yourself..i.e., and the patient..yada, yada, yada, happens to me all the time, especially if I have had a long stressful-difficult dictation day, LOL..Of even if Im day dreaming, sometimes I find myself falling into dictation mode, repeating dictating I have transcribed, or close to it..Yeow!!
Yeah.
intromission changed to interim admission.  LOL
yeah right.
dream on.
Yeah - sm
Diskriter. If you have 3+ years experience and want full time work, brand new benefits and line incentive - send your resume to them.
yeah, right, sure he is.
u
Yeah, right
Saying it doesn't make it so. You are probably QA'd by people in India. What a crock.
Yeah, sure.

Uh-huh

That makes complete sense (not).

Oh, yeah.
I cheated on the soup, too, by buying a box of premade at the health food store.  They've got such neat stuff there.
yeah, me too, and it's not

Yeah, well--
That's why this country is going down the toilet.  Between the corporate greed and being overrun by the illegals, how long do you think it will last?  The CEOs now don't care-- they are too busy counting their money and buying those expensive cars, yachts, and their third and fourth homes, etc.  They have what I call the "Marie Antoinette" syndrome-- "Let them eat cake".  They have theirs-- so the h*** with the rest of us!
yeah...
You are full of it. You aren't an MTSO. No place has a "crew" that is "all friendly and kind." They work at home, so how would you know what they are like? Even the rudest person can be nice for 2 minutes while talking on the phone to the boss.

Oh yeah!!
LOL - good going MQLover - like your style!
Yeah, you ask how old I am, but
the person who responded to me is the one who said it first. Of course, come down on the person who likes workings for MQ. How predictable. Go take a shower and maybe the water will make you grow a real thought.
yeah right, 60K w/MQ...

Yeah, please don't.
This is fun to listen to.
Yeah, I am.
I didn't say anything perverted. You are stuck on this molestor kick.
Yeah you.
I am not constipated and I know you aren't. I guess your laxatives worked to help you lose weight. Now, go cut your bangs in the morning.
Yeah, I'm 47...
and I STILL haven't developed those skills (that's why I'm an MT)!
Yeah...here ya go....

Yeah ....
Come to Texas, we'll go dancing, bring boots, I have the truck :-))
Yeah....

It's called MT stars, as in medical transcription, so post regarding medical transcription - as in the profession......understand that?

You want Regis and whatsername?  Post on that board.

You want Romper Room?  They have their board, too......   Get the message honey bun?

oh,yeah...
one doc for whom i worked used to dictate (breaking this up because i have no idea how to spell it): "die-ag-no-sis-siz."

eep. and they write med-orders in latin?? lol.
Yeah
Get everything in writing!!
Yeah, right.

Account instruction#1 says bold and CAPITALIZE allergies, list medications in number form regardless of what dictator says. Do NOT abbreviate in HPI, but you can abbreviate in Assessment if the doc does.  Don't use degree sign unless doctor dictates it.  List assessment in number form, even if there's only one item.

Account instruction #2 says bold headings but never bold or capitalize allergies.  Only expand abbreviations in Assessment but nowhere else in document.  Be sure to use degree sign when typing temperatures.  If there is more than one item in the assessment, use number form in listing them.

Account instruction #3 says never bold or capitalize allergies, don't abbreviate anything.  Never number medications, even if dictated by physician.  Can use the degree symbol if Drs. A, B, and C dictate such.  If Dr. D dictates patient's name in body of report and uses words that don't exist in the English language, be sure to type what he says since it's a verbatim account, and he complains all the  time that he doesn't want his report to sound so *formal* by using *the patient* instead of the name.   For all other reports, use *the patient.*  If Dr. E dictates the patient's sister, Sara, do NOT use the name Sara and just type *the patient's sister," regardless of what he really says. Dr. F might not dictated a numbered assessment list, but that's what he means.  Dr. G prefers to see the text of H&Ps on the same line as the heading, but on his consults, he thinks it looks better if there's a hard return, with the text starting on the next line.

As an Editor for multiple accounts, are you sure that YOU'RE paying attention to all the little idiosyncrasies contained in the sometimes 20-30 PAGES of account instructions for any given account? If so, I doubt you would find it so easy.

Yeah right.
If you make more doing MT than using your bachelor's you've made a wrong turn on the pathway of life, hon.

Sorry, but I don't buy it.
Oh YEah ..i KNOW what you mean!!!sm
especially about the cleaning part.... Oh boy..I sure do love my hubby and don't ever want to lose him..but, man Do i EVER get tired of cleaning up after SOMEBODY ELSE!!!
