Dictaphon and Lanier Question

Hi seniors,
As I am newbie, kindly anyone tell me when MT companies ask do you have c-phone or lanier voicewriter. Does this mean that they want this so I can dial their specified number and record dictation, so I can listen to it later on. Is this only purpose of these devices. Also are these compatible with each other platforms?
