HELP! I need to find work before graduation due to disability!

Posted By: LMF on 2007-03-25
In Reply to:

I am currently enrolled in an online medical transcription course at M-Tec and have 6 more months to go until graduation. The reason I chose MT is because I can't work a regular job due to physical limitations. I have had 10 laparoscopies for endometriosis and my body has been destroyed from the adhesions and chronic pain.

My question is- Is there a way that I can find work as an MT before graduation? I am desperately in need of money and would like to be able to find an entry level position using my MT skills that I have learned so far.

I know this is a lot to ask, but I really need some help. My COBRA medical insurance runs out next month. I am desperate to find some sort of in home work, preferably as an MT, but could also do other computer related online work as well.

I looked into Trans Am and Thank goodness I didn't fall for the $400+ software and books for "training" scam. I've already put well over $5000 down for my MT training + books and supplies- I can't afford to invest much more.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

New MT, Can't find In-house work
As a new graduate everyone keeps telling me to start in-house instead of trying to get on with a national company. Sounds great except that the local hospitals around me all outsource to national companies. I have checked everyone. So where am I supposed to get my experience? Even though I know starting in-house would be the best place for me to learn as a new MT and have other MTs around to help and answer questions I can not find anywhere to work. Frustrated!!
There are way too many inferior MTs - good ones will always be able to find work!

Newly graduated MT - is it possible to find part-time acute work?

I was wondering if anyone has had any success finding part-time, IC, acute work as a new MT?

I never hear of those who attended decent schools unable to find work
You can pay now or later.  I had job offers with every company I tested with when I graduated from M-TEC, which was more than 8 years ago.  I have worked from home since day 1 doing both clinics and mostly acute care.  I do not know of anyone who graduated with me who has ever had problems finding a job.  Employers are catching on as to which schools offer enough training so that the grads actually have some experience under their belt or are worth bringing up to speed.  I also did not have to start out at 6 cents a line.  That is absolutely insane.

I can't operate a foot pedal due to disability is there another way of doing this?

Hi

Dur to spina bifida I can't operate any foot pedal devices. I have been interested in doing the MT course for awhile but was told I could not beacuse of the foot device.  I would like to know if ther is a way around this and if so does  anyone know of a good online school to take the course. Thanks Lindie

I have worked at home since day 1 of graduation from M-TEC
I had multiple job offers when I graduated. I make excellent money now, after getting out of the learning curve of new accounts, etc. You might contact them and see if some of your training already received can be credited. Just an idea. I called around before I even went to school. All the employers told me to choose Andrews or M-Tec if I wanted marketability.
One school tells you to put "MT" after graduation
I know one that tells students they can put MT behind their name as in Jane Doe, MT when they graduate. That is so bogus! Any school that tells you to do that isn't being honest with you. They are telling you what they think you want to hear.
Yes it is all it claims to be. Upon graduation, I received info for least 50 companies that
.
I started working from home within 2 days of graduation.
I have been with my same company for coming up on 6 years now. I had some tough days in the beginning, but I dug in, learned as much as I could, and made it through the hardest part. In-house may be better for some starting out, but it worked for me being at home as long as I was willing to work hard. Good luck to you. :-)
Upon graduation, I received a lengthy list of companies (see message)
that were willing to test grads of M-Tec without experience.

I now have my own MTSO. I require experience of everyone except Andrews and M-TEC grads. In my experience, they have performed wonderfully, even without experience.
company was sold so they have no company to hire you after graduation!
They are not a reputable school and I went there so I should know. Even when they did have Trans. Relief Services they never answered my email about employment upon graduation.
I've seen awful work from "experienced MTs and good work from new graduates
I've seen awful work from "experienced MTs and good work from new graduates.

Training and education really does make a difference. Some people just have 15 or 20 years of very bad experience. They may be fortunate that one employer was willing to hire and keep them, but if that one closed, they would be in trouble. It all depends on the person. some new graduates are a better bet then some experienced MTs. I would prefer to find an experienced MT with great skills and a teachable attitude, but many experienced MTs know everything and are only willing to do things the way they've always done them.
most psych work is included in multispecialty hospital work..sm
contracted to a medical transcription service that requires multispecialty experience because of the hospital work. Unfortunately, very rarely can a medical Transcriptionist these days be given only one specialty when working for a service or hospital. We have to be well versed in multi specialties. The Turn Around Time on demands have increased, and thus the service or hospital gives the MT many different types of work. Learn as many specialties and gain as much experience in different specialties, which in turn will make you a more valuable MT and more apt to gain employment.
She's been trying to find...
I agree, there were some at the online course I took who have been 'taking' the course for 2 or 3 years. I suspect that to many the lure of $$ takes over with little concern for the amount of work and the responsibility of the job.
I can't find a job!!!
I just graduated about a month ago from Career Steps and I can't seem to find a job anywhere.  Everyone wants 2+ or more years experience.  I am going to try and go out on my own so I hope that it works.  Does anyone else find it hard to find a job that is new??
I can't find a job!
This is what I did 6 years ago while in the same position. Send a letter or flyer to all the speech and language pathologists in your area. It's easy transcription, but charge by the page. I currently charge $4.50 a page and do about 250 pages a month. These people are usually psychologists and don't want to deal with the line count thing. It worked for me. No ESL's and they pronounce each word correctly.
Good luck! E-mail me for more information.......resume@enter.net
I can't find a job!
No, speech and language pathologists are NOT PSYCHOLOGISTS. They are speech and language PATHOLOGISTS, which has its own separate certification and is very different from psychology.
How do I find them?
Could you give me a clue as to where I could start looking for these places that will give me an opportunity to sho them what I am capable of. This would solve child care and the fact I have no way of going anywhere.

Cant find a job
You need to find out what companies will hire Career Step graduates. They are partners in education with alot of transcription companies that will waive the 2+ years of experience. Check with your instructor from Career Step, to find out what companies to apply at. I graduated from Career Step- with honors, and it still took me just under a year to find a job. I happened to graduate at a time when no-one was hiring, so I had to wait it out. This is a hard profession to get into (working from home), unless you are willing to work on site for the first year or so.
can't find a job
I finally starting putting in my resume that I was tired of compaines not wanting to hire anyone without experience. That got my foot in the door and I will be starting with a company next week. Go for it don't let it discourage you. I too graduated from Career Step, BTW
You might find more help at
http://www.aamtstudentalliance.org/forum/
AND would like to find out what else to
study. Bought Stedman's Cardiology Skills Builder to further my skills.Would like to know another book I can study to improve skills without going to Andrews yet!

I am in AWE of the ladies who answer questions about words on the main board. They are amazing.
Can't find a job
I'm happy to hear that someone found a job.  I also graduated from Career Step in late December and can't find anyone willing to train.  They all want 2+ years experience.  I think the only training is in other coutries.  I'm getting discouraged.
Just be sure not to pay for work. There is an MTSO below who apparently charges to work for them (sm
It might be tempting when you're getting desperate for work to pay someone so you can work for them, but don't do it. You can buy software and a foot pedal on your own, so don't let them fool you. If you are approached via e-mail from this site by an MTSO saying they have work for you, please read the posts below before making any decisions.
She's been trying for some time to find
someone to tell her she can take the $1.95 MT course, then get a job making big bucks working only when she wants. She's been told the truth, she just doesn't want to hear it. And I don't care what you think of me, Carol.
It's hard to find...

someone to even give me a chance. I've been really lucky so far.

Thanks for the advice though.

where do the newbies go to find a mt job
I just granduated from my school as a Medical Transciptionist and would love to find a work at home job and everywhere I look they want you to have all this experience.  Where does one get that experience?  Please help!!!!
Why not contact them and find out?
.
I can't find a website. I think
they should give more information about the company than they did if people are to send their sensitive information by e-mail.
The ones that I see above went to school and can't find
jobs.  They weren't nurses hoping to change careers.
I found out how to find that out.
It look like I am getting about 80 words a line. But as my line count per hour increasese, wouldn't I be better off because even the one word and partial lines count as a sentence? It doesn't seem like it would be that bad of pay. But, of course, I am a newbie and do not know the ropes yet.
Can somebody tell me how to find an MTSO?
I've tried google, but MTSO seems to be a common acronym for lots of things. Is there some key term I could search for that would point me toward potentially hiring MTSOs?

Thanks.
Also a newbie, but I find...
that when everyone is talking about minimum wage they are talking about it as a state thing. These companies are NATIONAL companies. Also if any company that only works in one state they cannot use anything outside of that state for the company in order to keep state minimum wage. Pretty much everyone should be looking at Federal Minimum Wage. At least I know most businesses in Michigan would get laughed at for trying to pay someone 5.15 an hour. The only people that still get away with this are the Universities that hire someone as a student worker and they even start at 5.50 an hour. That was several years ago as well. If we really want to get mad we need to look at what those burger flippers are making (which I have thought about doing). On average the hourly pay for a nonprofessional job here can be 7-9 an hour.

The only problem I have with flipping burgers is what if they make me work during the day. The amount of money that I would make wouldn't even begin to cover the cost of daycare. Even for a teen to come into my house and watch them for a couple hours I am going to pay at least 5 an hour. For a 5-day a week daycare facility it can run 1500-2000 a month for my 2 little ones. If they get sick or you actually get to take a vacation you still pay even though your child is not there. I can see a fee, but for the amount they are charging it seems a little out there.

If I had a bigger place I would probably go back to teaching privately as I did before children. This was my alternative career that I am hoping would turn into a great career. I love to keep learning and medical/science just works for me.

I think a problem that I see also in reading these boards is that MTs without children or other obligations seem to be working themselves into the ground. 80hrs a week I have heard of. So not only do we have to look at pay , but look at the ridiculous hours that are being done to make a livable income.

Just thought I would give my 2 cents. I agree with the pay issues. For the person that is making hourly pay at home... If you don't mind me asking, where do you work?

Thanks for your ear.

how to find an MTSO
Thanks.  I know what MTSO stands for but I was having a hard time finding an MTSO in my area. I have noticed a lot of people say that a newbie is better off working for an MTSO to gain experience. But when I search for MTSO I get nothing. If anyone reading this works for or has worked for an MTSO, can you please tell me how you found them. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
Where can I find additional info on GI

for use as a study guide? I would like information for working in the medical field.

Thanks in advance!!!

Hard to find MT jobs for newbies

I attended TechSkills. The course was 32 weeks. I have a desire of being a transcriptionist. By me being a firm believer that I can make a career of being a transcriptionist, my positive attend has brought me a long way.

Hard to find MT jobs for newbies
Lisa, unfortunately I expect that you are going to have a hard time getting a job with your current English-language skills. Even from these brief messages that you have posted, it is patently obvious that English is not your first language. In any type of transcribing or editing position fluency in English is one of the first requirements; if you don't have that, you are not likely to succeed.

Hard to find MT jobs for newbies
Ian, Please consider a career in MT. I have been truly rewarded as my career has changed from working outside the home as a surgical technologist to a full time mom. The field is growing by leaps and bounds especially with all of the outsourcing that is going on. this would allow you to work at home if you wish and work at your own pace. You would not regret it. Now as for the school, VLC is an excellent choice, but remember that you get out of it what you put in it. I am a graduate and have been working steady for the past 2 years and am now preparing to take the AAMT certification.

Good luck on your choice.

No, I was trying to find the article online because I don't have time
to scan it into my computer. I have to finish working at my "real" job because the trick or treaters are here already.
