DSL operates over the phone line
The presence or absence of satellite service is irrelevant.
You need a second phone line for Cphone. It's an automatic dialer with a footpedal
s
it is a type of internet connection faster than dialup but still uses a phone line
but you can use your phone and be online at the same time.
A C-phone is a special phone (see inside)
that you can plug a headset into and a footpedal into, and then dial into a system and get the dictation over the telephone line, instead of over the internet.
You got lucky, but it's RARE to be
able to get a job with a "cheap school" education. Many places upon hearing what type of education you have will not even let you take their employment test - and you probably would not be able to pass it even if you did. So you would end up starting all over again, spending more money for a GOOD, reputable school. Just ask the many, many people who have posted here and other places, moaning that they got excellent scores at the "cheap" school, but now cannot find a job.
You are very rare and lucky indeed. NM

Gross line means anything on a line is a line, even if just one word
it is counted as a line.  Not sure what exactly you are asking, but if you are comparing gross line to the usual 65 characters plus spaces gross line is better.  If you make 7.5 cpl per gross line that equals approximately 9.5 cpl based on 65 characters.
cost

Tennessee Career College in Nashville, TN. Exact cost for me $9,839.15. I did recieve financial aid to cover it up front so I haven't had to pay anything yet. But I graduated in March and my payments start six months from the date I finished. So if I don't have better income by September I'm Screwed.

cs cost of course

Newbie here will be starting school at C.S. (EVCC) the end of March, was just lookin through all the postings and seen that someone was asking about the cost of the medical Transcriptionist course through C.S which is through Everett Community College,And someone replied they thought the cost was between $1300 - $1500 for the course in the package that you get when you start lookin into this it`s not clear of the total cost of this course. In the package I received it states that the platinum - level enrollment is $1560 and the gold - level enrollment is $1320......To clear this up so no one is as shocked as I was the actual cost for the complete course is $4290 approxamently $1430 for each of the three quarters

Cost of transcription course?
What does $442 get yah? This can't be real is it?
They cost an awful lot (sm)
Much more cost-effective to get your dictators to use an FTP site.
...extra cost, and most probably not until you
s
Career Step cost
There are different options, but none exceed $2000 - online options are approximately $1300 and $1500. Dale - Feel free to email me and I can give you more details. :)
Do a cost/benefit analysis...
There are some C-phone accounts out there, but I don't really have any solid numbers on how many and their availability. You probably just need to look at it more on the level of the individual account. Is this account one that will give you the means to recoup the expense and make a profit.
Are you getting your line count from your program or can you use the line counting software to do
s
and they cost an awful lot. TASP's are redundant services for...
MT's who can't figure it out on their own. Why pay forever for files being sent over the Internet when you can get your own software to do it and just pay once?
c-phone
what is a c-phone, how does this work, how necessary is it to purchase one??
C-phone
Thanks for the response.  Phyllis
as far as the C-phone is concerned...sm
the MTSO doesn't always get to pick the method of voice files. The hospital does. So if it's a place that uses the Dictaphone C-phone, ya gotta get if you want the job. I do a PT account that uses a C-phone and I've made scads and scads of easy money. Best account I ever had. Pays gross lines and blank lines! American dictators. They call us and apologize if they slur a word that we can't hear. I would cry if I found out I passed up that baby because of a lousy 400 bucks.  But I think she said if you didn't want to pay the 400 bucks, she wasn't offended - just don't apply.
phone interview
I am having my first phone interview today with a company.  Can someone please tell me what I should expect from this?  Thanks.
Phone interviews
I am a recent graduate from At Home Professions, and I have a couple of phone interviews coming up. I already passed their online tests. Can anyone give me any advice on phone interviews. What kind of questions do they ask? What information should I be prepared with? Any help or advice would be appreciated Thanks.
Phone interviews

I've had phone interviews where they just asked me questions about which hours/days I wanted to work and to review my resume.

Then, I've also had phone interviews after passing the online exam that asked me to move away from my PC and reference books, get pen and paper, and then rattled off about 40 questions ranging from medication usage, meanings of medical terms, expanded abbreviations, body parts, spelling tricky medications and longgggg medical words, etc.

I'll never forget when I was asked to tell the recruiter what EGD stood for and also to spell it!

I told her, first off that is a word that most docs can't even say, no less spell and you want me to attempt it? lol Recruiter laughed, and laughed again when I told her I spell it by typing *egd and watch it magically appear on my screen. lol

Just relax during your phone interview(s) and don't be afraid to tell them you are a bit nervous if you feel that way.
The more you interview with different companies, the better you will get at it.

Good luck to you!
C-Phone/Dial-in Dictation?
Can someone explain to me how a C-phone works.  Currently, I am working for a company that uses the WinScribe dictation platform via the internet.  Prior to this, I had only transcribed via microcassette tapes.  I look forward to an answer as I am clueless about this.  Phyllis
Is a C-phone a good investment?nm

in addition to the phone book
Go get 2 Rolodex's.  They are cheap at any office supply store.  Use one for medications and one for medical terms that are new to you.  Also for a pharmaceutical book, the Monthly Prescribing Reference is free on line.  Just Google it under that name and download it into your system.  It will give you weekly updates to the drugs that are either being taken off the market or being put on the market.  It's the drug book physicians use and far superior to any book that has to be renewed year after year.
BCB PC-Dart C-Phone information

Does anyone know anything about this transcription system or know where I can find the company on the web?  Thank you in advance for any help.

God Bless.

Can she get a cell phone signal where she is at.
I also cannot get DSL or cable, but I do get a strong cell signal where I am at so I got wireless broadband through my cell phone provider. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile all offer internet service and you do not have to already have a phone through them. I went with Sprint as they offer the fastest speeds in my area.

As for CS, I graduated 2 years ago and have never had an issue finding a job. I had 3 job offers within a week of graduating. I don't know if I was lucky or what. I have heard many CS grads lately complaining that they can't find jobs. I wonder if the marketplace is just becoming saturated with new grads and so it is more competitive than when I graduated.

Good luck to your SIL. Hope it works out for her.
I have a phone interview with Medivoxx next Tuesday.
Any info on what to expect during this phone interview is much appreciated. Do you feel that there is a good chance for hire since I made it to this point with them?? Thanks!
Yes, but make sure your cell phone contract allows
xx
Love the idea on using a phone book A-Z for writing down
I have almost 4 year experience now and may branch out on my own next year I think, or at least try. Love the idea of using the phone book, can't believe I never thought of it. Thanks for the tip.
Do not post names, e-mail addresses or phone numbers. (NM)

Got to transcriptiongear.com and then click on Transcribe Equipment. The C-phone is down the list a
s
Thanks! Turns out they forgot to send me the info containing the phone number to call!! Got it now.
Thanks again.
I'm sure you'd be first in line for it, right?

The VLC has had numerous complaints against them and people demanding refunds.  I was in a position to KNOW that people that couldn't get jobs because they couldn't pass MT employment tests after the VLC course.  How is that being immature?  Evidently, you're one of the VLC reps lurking on the boards so you can jump in and refer your school.  Otherwise, you wouldn't be taking it so personally.

$ per line?
As a recent graduate and new MT, could someone tell me what a fair salary is, per line of transcription? Thanks so much.
How much per line?
I also do voice recognition as well as straight transcription. I have been an MT for about 2 years now and started off doing voice recognition and I love it. I now do about 1800 to 2100 lines per day (voice recognition). I started off with a company doing vr and was only making 2.5 to 3 cents per line and I stayed with them for about 18 months and after the raises I was making 4.25 cents per line. However, that was an IC position and I wanted benefits so I started taking as many online tests as possible with companies that offer employee status and not IC. I wanted to get benefits. So, eventually I passed the tests for about 6 different companies and I got to pick which one I wanted to go with instead of begging for someone to hire me.

I would take some tests online on the days that you are not working perhaps on the weekends or evenings and see if you pass the tests. It can't hurt at all. I am now working with a new company and I am currently making 6 cents per line and this is for voice recognition, which is pretty darn good doing about 1800 lines per day. You will not know until you try. E-mail me if you have any other questions.
Maybe not out of line...
but not a very good *cooperative* attitude.
line count

Can someone please help me with the whole line count, WPM, total dollars concept. I'm trying to figure out my potential income doing MT. I know there are a range of answers but there must be some averages. I would be brand new at MT. What's your best guess of amount of work in say a 6 hour/day schedule? After 6 months experience? Thanks in advance for your help!

best on-line courses?

Hi all,

I'd like to take an on-line MT course; can anyone recommend one over any others? I plan on doing an internship for experience when I'm done for a while so I can get an actual paid position. How hard will it be to start working from home as I have a 20 month old that I want to stay at home with.

Thanks!

How is line counting done?
I know it is based on a 65 character line, often including spaces, but how do you line count your work and get an accurate number?
Gross line

Hi! I got offer of 7.5 cents per gross line. No idea is it better than 7.5 cents per line including spaces? Please advise!

7 cents a line
I graduated in Aug - my first job finally came in Sept/Oct they started me out at 7 cents doing orthro clinics.
Line rate
I believe that means 7 cents per line for a 65-character line. If it does, that is not a good rate, especially if you have experience. Also, you need to find out whether that is 65 characters with spaces or without spaces. If without spaces, that is really a bad rate! Good luck to you!
line rate
I have never heard of someone asking a rate based this way. Find out what the margins and font (etc) are before you sell yourself to short. Then I would calculate any document based on those responses and see what the would equal up to so you get a decent rate.
HELP--On-line course information..??
I have been an MT for 13 years and have a friend who is trying to enter this profession via an on-line course.  She asked me if I know of any.  Can anyone tell me about an on-line program that includes training in Expander programs that is a legitimate program and recognized and accepted by employers?  Thanks in advance for your assistance.
It is .06 per line. That is good to know.
Thanks

line counts
as a new grad is 90-100 lc/hr fair or should i get a job flipping burgers
compaired to .065/line more.....
So many newbies I've seen post on here are paid .065/line when they are first starting out. Many say that is very average newbie pay.
All you can go on to compare is the $7.43/hour that you made. Divide that by .065 and you have 114 lines/hour. If your not actually typing that many lines/hour, than your making MORE than average newbie pay.
I hope this helps.
It's the only way to compare the standard way (cpl) newbies are paid.
Christy
What do you mean by the contract seemed way out of line?
You don't give an example of what you are talking about, but I doubt anyone here would knowingly sign a contract that was detrimental to them or way outside industry norms.

I love my ESLs. Even though I do acute care, they tend to be fairly repetitive in their phrasing, and you get used to them after a few reports. In many cases, I would much rather have an ESL than a doc who drops entire syllables from words and words from sentences because he is in such a rush to be done with his dictation. Or spellers. I hate spellers.
Line counting
I would like to know who out there started off with a low line count and exceeded to the max of a 1000 lines or more. How many reports are that usually.?And the appropriate hours it takes to get it done.? Would you please share your story with me. that would be great!
Line counts
If you can create normals this will help tremendously with your line count. Also be sure to utilize any samples that you have available. If you are not using a word Expander already, that will definitely help your speed. The biggest factor in being fast and getting a good line count is to know your stuff and that just comes with experience. When you are first starting out there are a lot of things that you have to look up and that takes a lot of time. Once you get more experience you will find that you don't have to look up as many terms and your speed will pick up.

Good luck!
