I have 5 years experience and depending on the dictator avg. 140-175 lph, sometimes less, again it depends of the difficulty of the dictator. Lots a variables in the lph formula. You sound right on target though. If you don't have Stedman's spellcheck or Smartype I'd highly recommend them, helps tremendously when you are a newbie. I could not believe how helpful it was to have that when I was new. Remember if you are an IC you can write off any business expenses. I also have Shorthand, but much prefer the Smartype, probably because I also use the DOS version of it and love using that. I'd say the addition of these to my computer upped my productivity by about 30%. Any Expander program will increase your productivity, but at first you will get slowed down by adding in all the abbreviations/shortcuts, but in the long run it will pay off. Obviously try to leave less blanks, but never guess. I used to work at a place where we were only allowed to send in 5% of our monthly work to QA, so that did not amount to very many reports in a month, less than 1 a day, which I think was totally nuts. Try not to take the QA rants personally and let them roll off your back or else the stress of worrying, etc. will drive you nuts. Keep on plugging!
