There are small-sized medical dictionaries, too, instead of the huge

No, it would be a huge mistake.

I have 20+ years experience in this field. One thing you have to understand, wages are DROPPING for MTs.  Check out the posting on the Main board, (2006-09-15) where an MT with 12 YEARS experience  was just offered a position with one of the major nationals. And what was the marvelous pay offered for this extremely talented individual?  6.5 cents per line. I would venture that to be 6.5 cents every 65 characters (not really per line). Just 10 years ago, an MT could start at 9 cents per line. Now experienced people, NATIONAL companies are going at 6.5? helloooo....Does this raise a red flag? There is a tremendous amount of competition, not only from India and the Philippines but from companies who want the docs and the hospitals to buy their voice recognition and EMR programs. It is not a fluke that wages are dropping. I would be willing to bet that you would NEVER find a job...just try that scenario on for size.

I hate to be discouraging but I also hate the way people are led on about the MT field. And I hate the idea of you investing time and $2000 just so you could never get a job.

This is a huge list of MTSOs.

This list is huge.  A lot of these seem to be small businesses.  I only looked at one state, but the list was long.  Not many have websites, but some of these businesses are still doing tapes and offering a wide range of services.  You will therefore want to look mainly in your own State.

If they can only receive resumes by mail or fax they are not getting swamped with them, so you might have a better chance.  .  Happy hunting!

Except it's not a huge list of MTSO's. It's...
a site where you can post your own business if you want. Most of the postings are solitary MT's, just like you and me.
...owing a huge chunk all at once. nm

It's not a hobby, huge investment for a little "extra" money. See msg
If you can find a job working as an MT without training, I'd like to hear about it. Even MTs who take the cheaper courses have a difficult time getting hired, when there are excellent training programs turning out well-trained MTs (Andrews School and M-TEC).

If a foreign doctor with a strong accent who speaks very quickly is dictating in a noisy ER, would you know whether he is saying perineal, peritoneal, or peroneal? You need to totally understand what he is talking about in order to know if you have the correct word, and a spellchecker won't help.

Would you catch it if a doctor accidentally dictated a medication in mg instead of mcg?

Most people have no clue how complicated the medical language is, made more difficult by fast-speaking foreign doctors (or mumbling, slurring Americans) dictating in noisy places who don't really care if you understand what they are saying or not (but the person paying you certainly cares!)
If you don't want to get slammed with a huge payment due, estimated quarterly taxes

Scroll down just a little & you'll see "This is a huge list of MTSO's"
posted by Misha. I think this is what you're talking about.
Are you a medical transcriptionist? Have you experience or training in medical transciption?
You can't just say you want to be "an" MT and just start doing it.  It is not easy.
tsk tsk- small minds

I'm not trying to promote the Big 3 or Little 3.  I'm talking about an economic change we are all currently dealing with.

I'm not attacking the Big 3.  In fact, Career Step probably better represents the trend in terms of price of tuition.  If they add Job Placement full time, they will be tough to beat.

Obviously, all companies are going to be squeezed because the consumer is being squeezed.  Thus my prediction- just a prediction- and I'm not attacking the Big 3; I think tuitions will come down.  AND I'll go further, I think job guarantees will become much more prevalent because this is what the consumer wants.

I know from dealing with MTs all day that I have to be very accurate as MTs naturally search out the smallest details, have to do that to be any good at the job.  I wasn't the best MT.  I'm better in management.  So I try to be accurate so I don't get knit picked.  The important messages can be lost by trivial criticism and small minds.

My prediction is not accurate in every sense.  How can a prediction be entirely accurate?  It's an educated guess.  If I am right, we should start to see tuition prices falling.  It will be so slow that we may not notice it.  I'm guessing the consumer will demand lower prices as the economy continues to suffer.

I'm not criticizing Andrews or M-Tec.  No need to beat on me again.  I'm talking about something bigger than the Big 3.  Banks failing, dollar dropping, oil going up, food going up, CC debt on the rise, savings down, real estate falling, record foreclosures, etc.  This will all snowball over the next 2-3 years.  Issues like these are interlinked with one affecting the other.  The consumer will seek solutions.  Schools will have to adapt to changing economic forces.  We all will.

Peggy take a chance and say what you see happening!  Offer something that will give us your insight.  Students are a part of the cash strapped population and can use any insight they can get.  Put a bunch of opinions together and we can better form our own bigger view.

SMALL MT COMPANIES

Hi,

Does anyone know of any small MT companies?

Thanks,

Newbie MT

You should be able to take her to small claims court. If you have proof that she owes you, it's a fairly straightforward process.

You shouldn't need a lawyer.
MT Moms w/small kids

Hi!

Yes, I just read through a lengthy thread that touched on MY question in a round about way, but... I was just curious what hours MT moms with small children work and (just as importantly) when do you sleep!?!?

I have no problem with daycare and I have family that would glady watch my 5 y/o but I choose to keep him home to save everyone trouble and myself money!  He actually entertains himself quite well, better in fact than my husband when he's home during my work hours!

I had considered working during the hours that my son is sleeping, but I don't see how that would work well, at least not for me.  Even if I were to begin work at 8 PM and work until 3 or 4 AM, I would barely get to sleep before he wakes up, which is normally around 7:30.  Three or four hours of sleep each night would get old QUICK, not to mention that by the time I begin work I would be tired and ready for bed and unable to think clearly, be productive, and would likely have trouble staying awake.

Right now, I'm working 32 hours per week with 2 half days and 3 split shifts and it seems to be working somewhat well... but can be rather hard to concentrate and be productive with the bustle of spring and summer daytime activities around the house with a 5 y/o.

Although a lengthy post, my question was simple:  what work hours and sleep hours have you MT moms of small children come up with that works for you?  And sure, any advice or tips would be appreciated as well.

maybe a small local company
might be worth a try. My first job was with a company like that. I did not have an MT course or experience. It was relatively boring transcription (mostly insurance exams, worker's comp exams - tons of neck and back sprains) but it was a start. I trained in their office for a week or so and then they let me do it at home. After a year or so I worked for another small company and started doing clinic and hospital work. So if there are any small companies like that still around... check it out.
The fee (very small) is for their watching all of your work and
Honestly, the MT education programs are horrible. They should be providing this but they don't.

No one is going to spend their time/effort looking over a newbie's work, giving them constant feedback, etc., without charging some type of fee.

I wouldn't do it.

Small Service transcriptionists in Birmingham, Al
Does anyone knows of a small service transcription service in Birmingham, Al?  I'm about to graduate and will hopefully be able to get on with a transcription service?
Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried to do it all for years with small kids,
schooling, learning a new job, handling the household and finances. Something's going to suffer, and most likely, EVERYTHING will suffer. We can't do it all by ourselves and we shouldn't be expected to. Unfortunately, smacking someone upside the head with a 2x4 is considered assault, but smacking them upside the head with a legal document outlining child support amounts and visitation requirements is quite effective.
I work for a small MTSO. They aren't hiring - sm
I've been with them for years, and they still have the same group of 10-12 MTs. Very steady, but they rarely hire new people.
Have you tried local clinics or small MTSO's in your area?
That's how I got my first break. Good luck.
Have you tried local hospitals, doctors, small MTSO's
That's how I started out working for a very small local MTSO, then I went on to become an employee of a small local nephrology group where I still am today with great pay and benefits. I had no experience when I stated but the small MTSO decided to give me a chance. Don't give up.
Medical Transcription/Medical Coding

Hi,

I am a MT and can't find a job or pass employment test.  So, I have to take one of the AAMT approved schools this time around and was thinking about Medical Coding but, not sure of this.  Does anyone know if Medical Coding is harder than Medical Transcription to pass or is the stress more intense?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!

Barb

Medical Coder or Medical Transcription

I am so confused!!  I took a Medical Transcription course and could not find a job and it was not one of the BIG 3.  I am about ready to go with M-Tec Medical Transcription School.  But, I have been reading post about Medical Coders and now I do not know which to choose.  I do not want to make another mistake and choose the wrong school or the wrong career.  Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Another Medical Must

Does anyone know anything about this company?

I would appreciate any information on them.

Thanks !

Another Medical Must
Thanks. I did post it on the company board, but no replies yet.
Medical transcription is a lot more than just
typing. It depends on your knowledge of the material, how clear the dictation is, your knowledge of the material, how bad the doctor's accent is, your knowledge of the material, the quality of the recording, and, oh yes, your knowledge of the material. It also depends a lot on your knowledge of the material.
Becoming a Medical Transcriptionist

I am interested in becoming a MT but i'm not sure how to find out information on it. I'm trying to find out which is the best school, best rates and how it all works. Can I start working from home immediately or do I first have to work in an office? Is it hard to find a job? is the pay good? If anyone has any information for me please let me know - I'm getting desperate!

getting a Medical Transcription Job

I have taken a Medical Transcription course through PCDI but every job that I have applied for has wanted experience. How do you get experience if no one will hire you? Has anyone else had this problem? Please help...I'm so frustrated with the whole thing!!!

a medical transcription job
I finished a medical transcription class in June of 2005 and worked for a surgeon for 3 months.  I was driving far for little hours.  Can anyone tell me of a company that hires transcriptionists with very little experience
well, if you want to do medical transcription, then you want to get a job.
to get a job as a newbie is not as easy as you think. Some of the schools partner with companies who will take their newbies, with some additional specific training. So it increases your chances of getting a job - that is, if you want to work for the companies that partner with the school. Otherwise, you may want to go to the community college if they have a certificate program because at least you will have college credit towards your degree for your next job, when MT tanks.
Medical Secretary
Medical Secretary making $8.00/hr???? Where are you? Here in the DC Metro Area we are making $12-13/hr on average to start.
Do you have a medical dictionary?

AC Medical Records?

HI! Has anyone heard of AC Medical Records in Oregon?  I was offered a position with them and was wondering if anyone had any info. Thanks in advance!

Amanda

Medical Transcription is
looked upon as a stay-at-home-Mom's dream job.  A way to really make a great living while Junior is looking over your shoulder.  The advertisements do state that this works very well for family life.  Career Step has on the opening page "eliminate daycare".  So, do you think that MT's are being mislead?  If I had a toddler, I would jump at the chance to learn a way to make money at home all the while raising Junior.  JMO.

Medical Transcription

Hi,

I know what you mean.  The same thing happen to me and now the only thing you can do is enroll in another school.  I am enrolling in M-Tec at the end of the month.  I have researched and researched.  This is one I choose.

Best of luck to you!

Medical Spellcheck
Can someone tell me the best medical spellchecker to buy?  I need a new one and I do not like the old one I used
Medical terminology
I have to agree that this is one of the most fun courses in the MT program!

That said, do you have a good bookstore nearby? If so, maybe you can go in and take a peek in the "RMT Study Guide". That will give you a great idea of the extent of terminology you will be learning.

Good luck (but you'll do great)!
medical terminology
The medical terminology needed to be an MT is much more in-depth than most people realize. It's not something you can jump right into and start making decent money. There is also the fact that even if you know a lot of med terms, you have to be able to understand the doctors, who often have difficult accents or just don't speak well. Some people have been lucky enough, with a little knowledge of med terms and typing/spelling/grammar skills, to find a company that will take them on and train them (I did this, 13 years ago - I never went to MT school - I had a bachelor's degree in nutrition). I know there are others who had similar experiences. But this was years ago and these days (from what I'm reading on the board)I think the MT training programs are the best way to go. You'd be much better prepared. I know MT sounds like a wonderful work at home opportunity, and it can be, but it really does take time to build up the skills to make money at this. Good luck.
Medical Transcription Job

Best medical references
The school I am enrolled in sent me a Stedmans Medical Dictionary.  I don't have any drug reference books or anything else. What do you recommend for drug reference books and dictionaries?  Also, I am wanting to try to supplement my education as much as possible before I graduate. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this?  I guess experience is probably the best thing??   TIA
New Medical Transcriptionist

Hi

I am a 2003 graduate of Mountain State College Parkersburg WV, with an Associate Degree Medical Transcription.  After graduation I had my fourth child.  I have not been able to get a job doing Transcription because I lack the needed experience.  I would love to work from my home doing entry-level work.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I would appreciate some advice.

Thank you
