Yesterday, I received an e-maill from Accuscribe, offering me a position. The offer was a lucrative deal with a very good hourly pay rate instead of production, so I considered leaving my current position.

I was a little hesitant because they have what they call a 60-day "evaluation" period during which they do not consider you an employee. However, if after that 60-day period you are able to meet certain line requirements per shift, they will hire you on as an employee. I was also hesitant because they don't seem to have the best reputation on these boards.

After much thought and consideration, I e-mailed the recruiter back to say that I would take the position. I decided to do so because of the $$$$ being offered.  I completed and attached all my tax paperwork and I-9 documents.

HERE'S THE ISSUE...

Today, I received a response e-mail which stated that because I am legal resident alien, and not a U.S. citizen, that they can no longer honor their job offer to me.

Should I be upset?

I have lived in the U.S. since 1976. I was 8-years-old when I came to America, and it is my home! My stepfather was in the U.S. Army for over 20 years (now retired), so I grew up in a military household. I could not imagine living anywhere else.  I pay my taxes...I obey the law...without complaint...just as I was taught is the right thing to do, no questions asked. 

In a way, I feel discriminated against. I scored VERY high on all of their tests, and now feel that just because I have what seems to be in their eyes the "lowly status" of resident alien, that it accounts for nothing. Considering that they only require 80% to pass their test, the position could possibly go to someone who is less qualified, just because they are a U.S. citizen. Since they don't do a background check...heck...the job could go to a felon...just because they are a U.S. citizen. It seems as if the fact that I am more than qualified for the position, and live a law abiding life, means nothing because of my status.

Don't get me wrong, being a resident alien doesn't make me any less sensitive to outsourcing, I am very much against it. I VERY STRONGLY believe that American jobs should stay in America! THIS IS MY HOME! However, I didn't realize that the definition of outsourcing included someone like me, who has lived a quiet, law abiding existence in the U.S.A. for almost 30 years.

Man, what a wake up call this experience has been for me!

I think I just needed to vent, and didn't mean to get on a . I hope that I don't incite anything here ...it's really not my intention.
