could we all try this again

I was taught years ago that “it’s not <so much> what you say but the way you say it.” So, I would like to address the statements made by MTSO, in a less confrontational manner, because I think the “heartbeat” of the method has a lot of relevance. I, for one, would be interested in hearing the other side of the story, from people who are new to this business. Just the newbies ... not you old timers (ooo, it hurts to say that ... as I enter my 27th year in this business on the 19th this month).

1.  When a job post indicates that a resume is to be pasted directly in the body of the message, why would you attach it? Do you have a specific reason for doing that?

2.  If the job post states that you must have your own equipment specific to the job (i.e. foot pedal for *wav files, C-phone) or provide your own high-speed ISP), why would you apply for the position if you cannot afford to buy the equipment?

3.  Is there a reason you submit an application with spelling errors, poor punctuation, etc.?

And, now, a statement/question from me ...

4.  Okay, suppose I take a chance on you, because I believe you have potential. I assign you to an account that has a combination of “dream dictators” and some you want to smack on the side of the head with a frying pan. Let’s talk about the problem dictators. Understandably, you’re going to leave a good many blanks in those reports. It’s one thing to have someone sitting beside you, giving you immediate help when you get stuck on something – “Oh good grief!!! Is *that* what he was saying??!!! (as you re-listen to things with the correct answer from your fellow office MT). However, it’s another thing when you’re totally on your own.--- As an MTSO, I certainly cannot submit the reports to the client looking like Swiss cheese, so I will have to spend a good deal of my own time listening to the original dictation to fill in the blanks, or I'll have to pay editors to do that for me. Here is my question ... Do you feel that I have the right to ask you, the newbie, to re-listen to the original dictation and read the “new report” with all the blanks filled in, but not pay you for this time? Would you be willing to do that?

I hope I addressed the issues in an appropriate manner and it will stimulate some feedback and discussion among people new to the business. I would certainly like to know what you "new kids on the block" have to say.
