Cardiology/Sleep Study Transcribers

I am looking for other Transcriptionist that have cardiology and sleep study backgrounds. I am a newer MT, I am starting a cardiology and sleep study transcription account next week and have never transcribed for this specialty.

I wanted to know if there are specific word books or websites that you find helpful and are there specific things that you could tell me about the specialty that may help me?

I would appreciate any feedback

Thanks,

Angie

eBay
While I was investigating which online school I should sign up with, I came across a "course" on CD for something like $12.  I was very concerned that I would pay a lot for an MT course and discover I hated it, or that--worse yet--I would find out that my poor ADD brain would short-circuit from the added strain of studying so much new material.  So I sort of used this abbreviated course as a way to give myself a trial run.  I was not disappointed.  There was certainly enough material there to keep me busy, and I found I loved what I was learning and wanted to learn more.  Also, the course I purchased states right up front that if you are serious about becoming an MT, you might want to enroll with Career Step.  There are also CD's you can buy on ebay that have lots and lots of transcriptions you can listen to and practice with.  I've bought these, and they are fun. I don't think they are a ripoff at all.  BTW, I'm currently enrolled with Career Step and having a great time.
EBay.

I can't say enough about this.  I have almost the entire library of specialty books, and that is completely the way to go.  I use nothing else.  I have bought two lots of them on sale there.  I have get to purchase one brand new.

When I started out, I made a committment to buy one or two a month.  I am only missing the ER and psychiatry one, but really the specialties themselves take care of my acute care work, and I don't have too much psych as it is.  I will e-mail you some good links too.

eBay
Don't know if you got your foot pedal or not, but I have bought/sold a lot of transcription equipment (and everything else) on eBay. Just watch their ratings and ask for speed of shipping. Prices there are usually great!
eBay
Check eBay.  I found a TON on there and several came with answer keys.  Good luck!

Though one poster on this board did remark that he thought Sienna was a scam, I respectfully disagree. It is a short course, introductory in nature, and recommends that if you wish to pursue a full-time career in MT that you look into CS. I use their CDs for enrichment and feel I definitely got a good value for the price. There is a lot of good stuff there; there are some dead links. I am pretty sure nobody really thinks they can become a fully-qualified employed MT for $12. Full-fledged scammers charge much, much more!
Supplies on eBay
I purchased the SUM Program and all the necessary workbooks and reference books on eBay. Go to the HPI (SUM) website and check what is included for their program and what is necessary. The student syllabus for self-directed students is available for you to print out which will give you all your assignments. You will also be able to find all the Stedman's reference books that you will need for a fraction of the new price. By buying groups and taking what I need and reselling the rest, I ended up with all neceassry items including my computer and a new dictaphone for less than nothing. Just make sure you get the latest versions of all materials. Good luck! lynn

don't buy retail - get it off EBAY...

Do EBAY - MT without experience?
I've been doing this for 15 years (MT) and things do not seem to have changed. Finding a job after finishing school is hard enough. MT pay has gone down over the last 5-7 years - I quit for a bit and tried my hand at ebay - I made more money selling on ebay than what I was bringing home doing MT. Then my cpa said that I didn't even have to claim the ebay profits because it was the equivalent to a garage sale. I hope this helps.
Beware of eBay...
I had an ebay store 2002-2005.  I closed the store in February 2005.  Two months ago we recieved a letter from our bank stating that we were $143 overdrawn, on a closed account.  I had closed this bank account around the same time as the eBay store as I had only opened it for use with eBay and paypal.  In January 2007, I recieved an email from eBay for payment of $143 on a purchase I had made on my account.  I had made no purchase, in fact I had not used my eBay account since some time last summer.  Well, in February, I recieved an email from paypal stating that someone had tried to hack my account with them for...$143, but they caught it only after the bank questioned the transaction.  This was considered identity theft, according to paypal and I have since closed my accounts with both eBay and paypal.  I have since had problems with my current bank accounts and actually had two checking accounts frozen for a period of two weeks because of all of this.  Once paypal had notified me of the situation, I presented all of the email documentation to my bank and have since reained access to my accounts.  Just please be careful!  EBay and paypal both recommended to me that in the future, passwords should be changed at regular intervals, and for no reason should you use a "save password" option for accounts such as this.  I wondered why they offered the option...makes you wonder.
No, I got my spectra on ebay...
I got a really great deal, $10 shipped. I had shopped around and new that was a good deal, so I snatched them up for that price. :) I'm considering buying Universal Headset Extender and Volume Control from transcriptiongear.com so I can have more control over the volume.
Ebay and amazon.com
is where I found my best deals. You can buy used and new books on amazon.com from private sellers. I seriously got some amazing deals, most books or electronic books for only $5-10 shipped and these were newer editions. You just have to keep looking on both until you find the right price.  Good luck!
Question about ebay & supplies...

Hi everyone-

Let me first say how glad I am that I found this board! It seems like a wealth of information for the industry!!! I have my EMT certification and am currently enrolled in an MT class at a city college. I have also had med. term, anatomy, etc... at city college. I have an opportunity through a friend who has been an MT for years to jump right in with a job. I don't want to feel unbelievably overwhelmed, so I would like to get some more materials to study on my own for the next month or so. I have looked on ebay and there are lots of cd's available. I did read that Sierra was a scam, but there is another one that is $20.  Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and for what I am looking for would this be alright? Also, are there any other suggestions for tools and workbooks I could find? I would love to work on med. term. and test myself in that area....any good websites for this???  I would really love to hear any feedback you all might have for me. I would like to pursue anything that might help me out before I get started!  Thanks in advance for your help    Amanda

If no takers from this message try eBay. These sell very well there! nm

Shall I buy Foot Pedals from ebay, India?
Hello friends,

Im setting up a workstation in my home for MT. I recently found a Foot Pedal listed in ebay India.

Anyone here have purchase experience with foot pedals in ebay?

Prabha.
Chennai.
Have you searched places like Alibris.com and ebay, etc.?
Sometimes they have used copies for sale. Amazon.com too. I've had a lot of luck with Alibris before though.
Whoa..how much can you make on eBay before you DO need to file taxes on that income?
s
have you found anything yet?
Do you know someone in the industry with experience that can help you out. Maybe they can have you type and they can QA your work and train you at the same time? That would be in a perfect world I guess, but it was just a thought. I graduated from a business college 15 years ago and was fortunate enough to be hired on as a trainee in a hospital. best thing that ever happened for my career. Where are you located?
I found a new one

Looks like it is just starting but I don't know if I can post it

not from either and found job

I also did not go to Andrews, M-Tec, or CareerStep.  I got a job before I graduated.  I attended a school many called a matchstick or matchbook school.  However, I did not only study what was given to me.  I studied extra and typed way more than was required.

While I think that if someone has the money they should go to one of the bigger schools, it does not mean that if you did not go to them you wont get a job.

Hard work and perserverance get you a job.

Graduates, has anyone found
that M-Tec's curriculum was superior to Career Step? Also, for M-Tec grads, were you able to repeat a section (if you tested poorly) until you got it right, and improved? Was there a limit on how many times you could re-test on any given area (I'm thinking of my weaker areas that might need extra time.)
TIA! :) -Anne
I would not advise it. You would be found out.

Newbie found a job

I wrote last week about what a hard time I was having finding a job. I appreciate everyone's advice. The best advice I got was "persistence pays off".

I found out how to find that out.
It look like I am getting about 80 words a line. But as my line count per hour increasese, wouldn't I be better off because even the one word and partial lines count as a sentence? It doesn't seem like it would be that bad of pay. But, of course, I am a newbie and do not know the ropes yet.
Something cool I found...

Hi guys,

I don't know if this will help anyone or not, but I thought I'd post it anyway since it helped me.  It's laboratory reference ranges.  It's like 6 pages long.  You can print it out.  I don't know if you can paste addresses anymore, but you can Google it, or you can e-mail me, and I will send you the address.

Everyone on the forum has been so much help to me, I hope that this will help someone else.

newbie found job
I have only been out of school for one month.  I found a job withing days.  I found a website that list 137 companies.  I applied to all of them (which sounds like a lot), but I got 13 requests to test.  10% responses is NOT BAD with ZERO experience.  I went with the first company that contacted me because I liked what they had to offer.  If you email me, I can email you the list of companies.  You may some luck with them.
I found this info... don't know if it could help

I found another job lead

Once again, I did not check this site out. I have been reading the posts on this site. I feel bad because I found a job as a recent graduate. Maybe I can help someone. Just never give up! Here is the other job lead:

Rider and Associates are looking for entry level MTs.  Please take their test.

I found a job after about a month of searching
I have read the threads with so many negative comments about Softscript, but they do hire new grads.

Glad you found it helpful! :) NM

Nevermind, I found it in the archives. nm

I just Googled them and found their website
Found their website at www.lartechinc.com. Looks a little sketchy to me. Funky wording and a section on India operations. Looks like an Indian-run company. I would definitely stay away.
not everything works for the every person, but what i have found.....
I started out many years ago working for a few doctor's offices (neurosurgeon, infectious disease, oncologist, urologist) in the same building. I would pick up tapes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and deliver work those same days. I worked seven days a week back then (probably still do). After years of doing and the cost of gas skyrocketing, I realized it would be more beneficial for me to work for a service (either independent contractor or employee). I signed on with a national company (MedQuist). I know there are a lot of people out there who are not happy with MQ, but I am. My accounts are good, so I can make a good line count. The only problem is that my accounts are so good that there are many MT's working on them, and I tend to run out of work early in the day. I have signed on with an additional company to fill the void in my day.

I think I saw somewhere that MQ was hiring MT's with little or no experience. If that is the case, I would consider MQ or another national to get started.

I don't know anything about the benefits offered, as I rely on my husband for that.

Good luck.

I have found that avid readers make much better
decisions in regards to their grammar and the way they apply it.  If you are an avid reader, then you can learn the traits of authors and writers.  Maybe that is something one should ask when interviewing a new MT.  Do you like to read books?  On the other hand, seasoned MTs have learned from dictators that are great with grammar.  I was fortunate in that regard.  I have come across some beautiful dictators.  Working on-site helps.  The MD/DO is available to guide you in transcribing the report and to answer questions.  Some things though are just understood in this profession, which makes it tough for new grads.  Exposure on-site is the best "medicine"!  Keep up the good work and encouraging words.  It is nice to know there are others out there who still care about producing a professional document and not just the "cents per line" and how much can be produced in an hour.
All those answers will be found in these very pages discussed

I've hired from that school before and have found CAIs SM
graduates to be severely undertrained with lack of basic skills. I've hired several of their graduates and none of them worked out. That's how I know it's not a quality school.
I always found the tests more difficult than actual work (sm)
I think they try you out on their most difficult to see how you do. It also may be the stress of taking a test too. I tested with anyone who would let me test, and I failed a lot of them, but just keep trying. Persistence does pay off. It sounds like you have a great start and you should probably stay where you are to get the experience. Yes, it will count. Best of luck to you!
Ooops! Nevermind So. I found the answer from the posts below. Thanks. :-)

Found a company that is willing to give new MT graduates a chance

Hello,

A company called World Direct Transcription Services, called me yesterday. And she asked me a couple of questions, and then asked me if i would take 2 tests. I said yes of course! One test is a terms test, other is a typing test, also she wanted me to go to a certain website and take a speed typing test too. I will let everyone know today if i get hired.

I've been searching for quality MT school- glad I found this Board

It appears that everyone can agree on M-Tec or Andrews School--by the way is that Linda Andrews and not Andrews/Holbrook?

I want to get started with training soon and I'm having difficulty deciding.  I've taken both their tests and they both seem like good choices.  Decisions, decisions...
