It appears that everyone can agree on M-Tec or Andrews School--by the way is that Linda Andrews and not Andrews/Holbrook?


I want to get started with training soon and I'm having difficulty deciding.  I've taken both their tests and they both seem like good choices.  Decisions, decisions...

I certainly didn't mean to imply that you didn't know your terminology. I just know that if there is a specialty that I start transcribing that I am unfamiliar with, well, I need to brush up on my knowledge......and I have been doing this for 21 years. For instance oncology, ophthalmology, etc.

I didn't attend one of the "big 3". In fact, I went to the local vo-tech school for medical office assistant just after high school. MT was just ~part~ of the cirriculum. Got an MT job before I even graduated covering for a local MT on maternity leave....that doc office ended up keeping me and it has gone on from there. Worked in doc office for 3-1/2 years, radiology office for 4 years, acute care hospital for 3-1/2 years, and now MQ for 10 years. I am just suggesting that having good references, either books or awareness of good web sites, can make all the difference when you are trying to prove yourself.....because we all get stumped every now and then.

Besides the company name, what do you expect someone to search by? There is only so much information available by searching. I have not heard anything good about them either, but that's not saying much.

Why not send her an E-mail privately instead of calling her out publicly?  That is the polite and helpful thing to do.  Tact:  Something that is not taught in MT school.

I really love my book. You're right, the size of the print is very nice. If you notice, when listing references for this book, it lists the Medical Phrase Index, which is the very pricey version of this book. I think that particular book is aimed more towards coders, and this book is specifically for MTs. Anyway, glad to help!
Helpful to Know
Thank you for posting, because it is really hard to get a balanced picture about the "best" education and job prospects.  Even though it is anecdotal, such remarks help form that "big" picture.

You sound like you have a system that works for you. I tried getting more hours in at night after the kids went to bed and found that I was too tired, would get bad eyestrain and was just not that effective when I did not get enough sleep. 


I actually make more money at home as an MT than I would in an office.  Like I said below, mine are in dc. If it were just my 3yo daughter, I would be able to do it with her around.


Even though I have a 2 and 3yo in daycare, the benefit of working from home with a flexible schedule (have to get 35 or so hours in per wk, but whenever as long as its steady) is that I can pause my workday at 3pm when my 7 yo gets out of school - I pick him up, then I pick them up. I am also able to send my 3yo to preschool 3 mornings per wk and take the time to drop her off and pick her up.  I have also been able to work on sick days.  I estimate that since December, I would have had to take 8.5 sick days to care for my children if I worked in an office.


After being a SAHM for a long time, I am enjoying having some time where I am working and the kids are in school. 


To each his own - I have fielded opinions from both sides on this one.

I don't think that is helpful. She needs to learn

to do it "right."  Being a newbie is tough, but a strict QA is more beneficial at this point in her career.  It does't do her any good to have "slack" QA and then she moves to another job later and they are tough and she has to struggle then.


I've been doing this for years and I still make mistakes.  I've spelled calculus for gallbladder stones for years and no one corrected me until recently, so all these years I've been spelling it incorrectly.  Learn to do it "right" the first time and it will serve you well in the future.

I'm an almost Newbie who has become very confused reading all the posts about good schools, bad schools, good companies, bad companies -whew - my head is turning.  This is something I have wanted for a long time.  I've gotten taken by 2 bad schools and I'm just about to finish my third attempt and this time I'm determined to work.  My problem is I can't afford to quit my current job in insurance and maybe not make enough money as an MT.  I also don't know where to start to find a reputable company to even try to get MT work.  I got into the Trans-Scam deal about 4 years ago and that had just completely discouraged me.  I thought I would never be able to be an MT.  I just didn't have what it takes.  This time I'm determined and would certainly appreciate all the feedback you all have.  I read some posts from MT's making pretty good money - but does anyone ever reveal what those good companies are?

I didn't even realize I was on the Newbie board.  I've posted this before and people always thank me, some argue with me, but it's my stand and I'm sticking with it!! 


Newbies especially get suckered in by this line the companies feed and it's not right.  Sounds good and emotions take over and then the spider has you right in its web.  How can a woman hold her baby and think "If I'll just take less pay I can stay home with him/her and watch them grow up" and then say No to that!  All I'm saying is go for BOTH -- stay home with your baby or for whatever reason you want to work from home but DEMAND for yourself and as a group with all of us the best wage you can get as well!  Go for the cake AND the ice cream.  You DESERVE both!  Just be professional about your work responsibilities to prove to your boss that you DO take your job seriously and CAN do both and are worth the pay which isn't likely to get any better when this tactic works so well. 


Many seem to forget this is a PROFESSION.  We're not at home making home-made preserves to be sold at the county fair or something.  Sometimes we come off sounding like that, though.  I'm sure the doctors and lawyers on the golf courses talk about the benefits from working from home too but they don't share that with their patients whom they still charge the same.  We keep shooting our cause down all by ourselves.  If MTSOs were not allowed to read this site, it would be a different matter.  But, like I said, we're being watched. 


If you want to move this to the Main Board go ahead.  I don't know how to.  I've only replied to threads.

Helpful hint
When you e-mail a company requesting to be a part of a mentor/internship program, and that company takes the time to e-mail you back with all the particulars, a polite thank you is in order whether you accept or decline. I just had this happen recently. Perhaps this person didn't check her spam filter, I will never know I guess, and now I'm upset I took the time to offer her a position to help her out when she is the one who contacted me in the first place. OK, rant over.

Quick, helpful advice for new MTs
While I'm thinking about it, I just wanted to post this tip really quickly.

One of the ways I REALLY helped myself when I first started in transcription was to hang out on word help boards (like the one here). When a question came up, I would research it and answer if I could find the correct word. This not only helped the people who asked the question, but it super duper hugely helped me learn what words actually sound like when a doctor says them, and what certain things were and/or did.

Now I go to the word board mostly to help, but I'm still amazed at how much I learn 12+ years into the business.
A helpful note about expanders

I just thought I'd offer this up: The ABCZ method for making shortcuts. I just came upon it after reading about it in the archives here. It's just a simple method that offers advice and suggestions about how to make and organize your abbrevation/expander files. Anyhow, the method description is free for those who don't want to spend any $$. I hope this helps!

I'd not attend the Comm College if teachers are not helpful

I wouldn't attend that Community College from what you have said.  The CC I went to had two wonderful teachers who were semi-retired MTs.  I vaguely remember that the clerks I enrolled with knew very little.  I grew to be very impressed with the teachers over time.  A great teacher is such a blessing.


Med Workshops' staffing school did a good job for us almost 2 years ago.  I've spoken with the owner Karen over the phone.  She is bright and honest.  We moved to another school because they offered us a better deal financially.  We will probably use Med Workshops again in the future sometime.  Remember that they are like a wholesale alternative.  They probably don't have a sales staff for the "retail student". 


But, a wholesale approach doesn't mean you don't get assistance.  It means they make most of their money training students for individual employers.  Companies like this don't advertise to the public.  They contact the larger transcription companies and are looking at a different model.  They are dealing in groups to be able to cut overhead, etc. etc.  Companies like who I work for find this very appealing because a basic education is usually very similar everywhere because the same 2-3 teaching aids (books, CDs, online) are used by almost all schools. 


We are looking at teacher/mentor support for the students and also the cost of education.  We won't be able to find enough students at one time if we have to rely on a very expensive retail school- they aren't set up to satisfy our needs, but their program might be great.  Retail at $3800 or wholesale at about $2000?  For employers like mine the answer is simple.


I'm getting caught in a "25 words or less" dilemma in trying to explain this.  I feel some here will jump all over me if I don't say just the right thing.


I've been saying that, I see this wholesale or staffing school approach as the new wave in education because it solves problems for the students and the employers.  It's a win win.


I hope everyone keeps an open mind and just considers these ideas.  I'm not saying this is the only solution for everyone.  Don't hit me, I'm just a messenger.

Do you know someone in the industry with experience that can help you out. Maybe they can have you type and they can QA your work and train you at the same time? That would be in a perfect world I guess, but it was just a thought. I graduated from a business college 15 years ago and was fortunate enough to be hired on as a trainee in a hospital. best thing that ever happened for my career. Where are you located?

I also did not go to Andrews, M-Tec, or CareerStep.  I got a job before I graduated.  I attended a school many called a matchstick or matchbook school.  However, I did not only study what was given to me.  I studied extra and typed way more than was required. 


While I think that if someone has the money they should go to one of the bigger schools, it does not mean that if you did not go to them you wont get a job.


Hard work and perserverance get you a job.


Graduates, has anyone found
that M-Tec's curriculum was superior to Career Step? Also, for M-Tec grads, were you able to repeat a section (if you tested poorly) until you got it right, and improved? Was there a limit on how many times you could re-test on any given area (I'm thinking of my weaker areas that might need extra time.)

Newbie found a job

I wrote last week about what a hard time I was having finding a job. I appreciate everyone's advice. The best advice I got was "persistence pays off".


I found out how to find that out.
It look like I am getting about 80 words a line. But as my line count per hour increasese, wouldn't I be better off because even the one word and partial lines count as a sentence? It doesn't seem like it would be that bad of pay. But, of course, I am a newbie and do not know the ropes yet.

newbie found job
I have only been out of school for one month.  I found a job withing days.  I found a website that list 137 companies.  I applied to all of them (which sounds like a lot), but I got 13 requests to test.  10% responses is NOT BAD with ZERO experience.  I went with the first company that contacted me because I liked what they had to offer.  If you email me, I can email you the list of companies.  You may some luck with them.

not everything works for the every person, but what i have found.....
I started out many years ago working for a few doctor's offices (neurosurgeon, infectious disease, oncologist, urologist) in the same building. I would pick up tapes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and deliver work those same days. I worked seven days a week back then (probably still do). After years of doing and the cost of gas skyrocketing, I realized it would be more beneficial for me to work for a service (either independent contractor or employee). I signed on with a national company (MedQuist). I know there are a lot of people out there who are not happy with MQ, but I am. My accounts are good, so I can make a good line count. The only problem is that my accounts are so good that there are many MT's working on them, and I tend to run out of work early in the day. I have signed on with an additional company to fill the void in my day.

I think I saw somewhere that MQ was hiring MT's with little or no experience. If that is the case, I would consider MQ or another national to get started.

I don't know anything about the benefits offered, as I rely on my husband for that.

I have found that avid readers make much better
decisions in regards to their grammar and the way they apply it.  If you are an avid reader, then you can learn the traits of authors and writers.  Maybe that is something one should ask when interviewing a new MT.  Do you like to read books?  On the other hand, seasoned MTs have learned from dictators that are great with grammar.  I was fortunate in that regard.  I have come across some beautiful dictators.  Working on-site helps.  The MD/DO is available to guide you in transcribing the report and to answer questions.  Some things though are just understood in this profession, which makes it tough for new grads.  Exposure on-site is the best "medicine"!  Keep up the good work and encouraging words.  It is nice to know there are others out there who still care about producing a professional document and not just the "cents per line" and how much can be produced in an hour.

I've hired from that school before and have found CAIs SM
graduates to be severely undertrained with lack of basic skills. I've hired several of their graduates and none of them worked out. That's how I know it's not a quality school.
I always found the tests more difficult than actual work (sm)
I think they try you out on their most difficult to see how you do. It also may be the stress of taking a test too. I tested with anyone who would let me test, and I failed a lot of them, but just keep trying. Persistence does pay off. It sounds like you have a great start and you should probably stay where you are to get the experience. Yes, it will count. Best of luck to you!
