Word Expander

Please someone tell me which one is best word Expander which works with MS Word.

Thanks in advance!

What word expander do you use?

I am a newbie and have only been employed for a little less than two weeks.  I do about 300-500 lines an hour depending on which platform I am on. That really isn't all that bad, considering the fact that I have to research a lot of words. That said, I want to explore ways to increase my productivity without hurting my acuracy.

Thanks.

word expander programs
I am getting close to birthday time as well as graduation and want to ask for a word Expander program as a b-day present from my husband  Is there a decent priced one out there that still is easy to use and works well. I have heard of Smarttype but that is pretty expensive (though I hear well worth it) Are there any others
Word expander Shorthand

Can anyone tell me if the word Expander program of ShortHand works well with Editscript?  If not or if there is another program that will work well, would you please comment and let me know?  I am ready to make this purchase and I work on the Editscript platform.  What I'd like to know is what you like and dislike about the program and how difficult it is to install, learn and use.

Before anyone posts to tell me to do a search, please know that I have searched and have not been able to find this kind of information.  I just don't have much money and don't want to waste money on a program that may not suit my needs.  So, your honest comments on how well this program works for you as an MT, particularly on that platform, would be very helpful and appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Word Expander Recommendations

Which one is best and where do I get it?

Thanks !

What word program
do most companies require you to have to work for them? I have wordperfect 12 right now and have been using it for school. I am planning on buying something else before I start working, but I'm not sure what would be best.
word processing program
Does anyone know of the most-used and best software program for MT's?
expander
I make up my own as I go along. It would be hard to copy someone elses. Some examples i use are tp for the patient, sg for significant, PA for patient, fu for followup, etc. If you have your own doc and know exactly what they are going to say or even for a national you can use an Expander for whole paragraphs or even the whole document. Oh yeah, I also use my expander for headings like cc for CHIEF COMPLAINT, ros for Review of systems etc.
Do you have an expander? If not and if $$ is an

issue you can use auto correct in Word, provided you will be working in Word.  Start building you r Expander now.   There are lists with suggestions if you don't know where to start.   This will probably save you the most time.   Don't get on the net and check e-mail or check the boards while working.  This is a major time killer.  You might have the best of intentions to get on and look up a word, but if you aren't careful you've wasted 30 minutes.

If you know what type of work you will be doing, clinic, radiology, acute care, etc. do some searching now for some good reference sites, especially if you don't have any reference material already.

If you are going to be doing clinic a lot of times doctors will have their canned sayings for ROS and PE, so you could possibly create an expansion for the entire thing and that will really speed you along.  Of course you must be careful that you don't put in the canned text without reviewing the dictation to make sure they aren't changing anything.

Try not to get up from your chair but every 2 hours.  Before your shift starts have your beverage of choice, go potty, have materials needed already at hand.  Don't answer the phone unless it is an emergency, don't get up to switch the clothes from the washer to the dryer or unload the dishwasher.  You might want to get a cheap egg timer so you aren't constantly looking at the clock.  I think they only go for 60 minutes, but you can set it again.  After every 2 hours get up, stretch, walk around, switch the clothes over, etc.  If you are constantly getting up to do things it will take you 12 hours to do 8 hours of week - BTDT.

The more comfortable you become with the dictators, the more comfortable you become with the terminology you'll be knocking out the lines pretty quick.

My expander
I purchased shortcut for windows after my trial, and I REALLY love it. I am happy with it and I think it was worth what I paid for it. Just my opinion :)
expander tips

I was in your shoes as a newbie with more than 100 doctors and 32 specialties.  Thought I would drown and knew I had to find a way to speed things up.  I was not taught about Expanders in school so it took me a while to catch on.  But then it occurred to me that a great deal of what I was transcribing was the same thing no matter what doc or specialty -- things like:

last visit, next visit, the last time, the patient, the patient presents today with, I will, she will, he will, returns for, referred by, return in 2 weeks, the abdomen, the chest, the right upper extremity, the left lower extremity, heart is regular rate and rhythm, with his, with her, feels good, feeling good, hurts when, is able to, is unable to, numbness and tingling, aches and pains, pins and needles, light touch, was palpated, performed by, no guarding, no rebound tenderness, MRI results, CAT scan, CT scan, abdomen and pelvis, wounds are well healed, no erythema, no drainage, no ecchymosis, no sign of infection, no pain, no tenderness, range of motion is, blood pressure is, on the left, on the right, left hand dominant, right hand dominant, due to, due to the fact that...    you get the drift.

When I started entering THESE kinds of things that were said repeatedly, then my lines went up.  The other things -- medical diagnoses (except for the most common ones) and odd medical terms -- I didn't concentrate on making expansions for them as much as I did the common phrases because I did not hear them in every report like I did the other things.  We type a lot of common words and the same phrases over and over no matter what specialty or doc.  I enter these especially, and then add the other things as they present themselves and if I have time.

I also enter drugs with and without their most common dosages as they are dictated.  Saves a ton of time next time around.

Some days I make a game out of it -- Today I will enter all phrases that have to do with coming and going:  The patient presents with, the patient came to see me today, the patient presented with, the patient returns complaining of, etc.  AND she will return in 2 weeks, I will call her with the results, she will be seen on a p.r.n. basis, she will be seen as needed, she will call for the results...

Other days I put in phrases that begin with a period of time:  Over the weekend, over the last few days, over the last week, over the past few months, over 2 weeks ago, over the last 10 years, in the near future, in the next 2 weeks, next week, next month, next year, yesterday, last night, in the morning, in the evening...

Another day I will concentrate on phrases that begin with "on" like:  On the left side, on the right side, on the right side of the, on the left side of the, on the hand, on the foot, on the arm, on the leg....

Then I do the same with the word "in" like:  In the fingers, in the foot, in the hand, in the abdomen, in the lungs, in view of, in view of the fact that...

Yes, it takes times to make these shortcuts, but you only have to do it once and it's in there.  It's a delicate balance between time spent doing this and time spent in production, and yet once they are entered, you've got yourself a short form that you can use from then on out.  Time lost today will pay off tomorrow.  You just have to balance it and in the beginning it's tough because you are starting from scratch but believe me -- the day will come when you use mostly short forms and start to fly.  And you'll find that the time spent entering the short forms will decrease the more you do it, too.  It will become a habit to enter them on the run as you type.  You should expect to go slowly with this at first because it's new to you and you have to figure out a system that works for you.  It will seem overwhelming but after a couple of months you will begin to notice a difference if not sooner.

My best timesaver yet:  the letter w for "with"  either alone or with another word or phrase:  with, with ecchymosis, with tenderness, with pain, with rotation, with edema, with drainage, with symptoms of...  Do the same thing for "without."

If you have the time, try to put in at least one short form from each report you type, then two, then three, etc. as your pace picks up.  That way your production doesn't drop too much while you do this.

I recommend using an Expander program that is NOT tied into your place of employment, one that is YOURS and you can take it with you if you leave there.  You never want to have to do this all over again!  Make one or two backup copies nightly or at least every few days depending on how much you enter.  Put them on CDs or something external so that you will never lose it in a crash.  Then get away from it all or you'll fry your brain!

Good luck!  It CAN be done with time and perseverance.  Just be patient and keep at it.

An expander works much the same as

auto-correct, though your space is limited with auto-correct.  It may take you a year or more, but you will eventually reach your limit.  I really haven't used auto-correct that much but I don't know if there are character limitations so that you could only enter a sentence, where with an Expander you could enter entire physical exams.   Also with an expander you can automate some of your functions such as automatically spellchecking, copying and pasting, etc.

I don't know if you can transfer auto-correct entries either, so when you get an expander you may have to start from scratch and rebuild your expansions, though I don't know for sure about that.

I'm not a fan of ShortHand, but lots of companies use it and it is compatible with most platforms.  You can do to their website and download a 30-day free trial to see what it is like.

Text expander

I currently use IT text Expander from my course at MT at home.  Is there a better text expander that I should be using?

How do you make such an expander list?
I just bought ShortHand and have a few words/phrases in it. I have no system as for deciding what to put in it. How do you decided what to do? I really need to improve my line count. Any info appreciated.

using a text expander helped me drastically.
Also, this may seem really obvious, but if you're using MS Word, use the AutoCorrect feature to auto correct any errors you commonly make.  I actually use the AutoCorrect feature as my text Expander as well.
Are you using an expander? Are you using it for entire phrases, and not just words?
It also makes a difference if you have the same dictators a lot, or if you have different ones all the time. But still, phrases like "alert and oriented x3" and "The patient was prepped and draped in normal sterile fashion." can be done with just a few keystrokes.

Are you staying in your chair, and staying focused on your work, not checking emails, etc.? (This is a problem I have, I get distracted easily, especially if I hit a hard or boring part!)
Please make sure to ask word questions on the Word Help board. There are
people who specifically answer questions there.
Get a copy of your BOS II guide for style, work with an expander, use your resources to the max. nm

If you currently type in word, then do a word count
then I really can be of no help.  Usually when trying to get an idea of a line count with spaces and without spaces, you can use this method.  Some people have actual line counting software.  I, however, do not, so I am not much help in that regard.  Hope this helps at least a little.
Microsoft Word/Microsoft Word 2003 are the same
MS Word 2007 is an upgrade.  Are you sure that you don't have it installed on your PC?  I don't know if that helps...good luck, and please don't pull your hair out, it comes out with age (lol)
try the SUM Program
It is the best one I know of. Good luck.
MT program
Hi,

I took the Oak Horizon course offered at CVCC in Hickory NC.

At the time I took it, it was 2 semesters. But it is now a 3 semester course.

It was tough but I managed to make the honor roll.

Take care!!
The CS program done via the
community college is actually a better program! I would definitely consider myself a CS graduate. Put CS first, and I wouldn't even mention a community college unless you are asked. Where you took the CS course shouldn't matter. Good luck to you.
The program more than likely can be used elsewhere.
It doesnt mean you are paying for work. After you have been in transcription a while you will have dozens of programs on your computer for some reason or another. I have about 20 :) Some were free and some I had to pay for.
FTP program
Does anyone know of a good FTP program, and how to work one? Sorry if this is posted to the wrong board, but I am new to posting anything. :-(. Thanks in advance.
AIM program

Does anyone have any experience with the AIM mentoring program through Allstatae Transcription?  Any info would be helpful!

AIM program
That was what I was afraid of! I have already paid my $99. and she said that it would be about a month before I could get started because she had a new client starting and she was going to start my internship with that client. Did you do any interning with her at all? Why did your friend go 5 months?? Thanks for your info I really appreciate it!
AIM program
Yes, I went through the program earlier this year and was able to find a job because of it.  However, I never did receive my certificate in the mail.
M-TEC uses the SUM Program.
You are provided detailed feedback from an actual live human being who has experience in the field.

CareerStep has their own dictations that you compare to a computer program. You have to deduce for yourself if the differences in your transcription versus the "key" are true errors or acceptable style differences or if you are correct and the person who transcribed the report for the course made an error. If you have questions, you are to contact student support, who may or may not have time to provide feedback, and that feedback may or may not be accurate.

I went to CS, but I also did the SUM program on my own. If I had it all to do over again, I would not choose that program. I would go with Andrews or M-TEC. I did graduate with high honors, and I did get a great job a week after graduating (with a company I still work for), but I supplemented the course with the SUM program, Language of Medicine, and the HPI workbooks. There really is no comparison when it comes to the quality of materials. The CS course is essentially homemade whereas the materials used by M-Tec have been created and vetted by knowledgeable professionals.
OSI mentor program.
I applied and have not heard anything yet?  Have any one else applied.  Thanks.
I don't know about their mentor program...
But I have been working for them for about 6 months now and absolutely love them. I highly recommend them, and I have heard good things about their mentor program. I just haven't experienced it first-hand.

Try an internship program
Cort Medical and Accustat Carolinas both have a mentoring progam, I also graduated from PCDI and could not find work, I had to work for free in an intership program for 8 weeks to get a job in the end, this might sound hopeless but I know how frustrating it is to look for work, I now have been working steady for accustat and love them if you need more information email me at flgeitner@comcast.net if you wish and may be I can help..
OSI Mentoring Program
Ever heard of OSi Mentoring Program?? Is this supposed to be on the up and up???? Good program? Bad program? Good company???? Thanks for the info....:)
osi mentor program
Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. I am currently in the OSi mentor program and while it lacks a lot of structure, I am certainly getting my foot in the door and obtaining the experience necessary to move on to another company when possible.
Is there anyone at your school/program who can help?

Would it be possible for you to ask someone for more sample ESL dictations to transcribe?  Would you be able to buy a CD of ESL dictation?

This company has an ESL CD:  http://www.absoluteexperience.com/AudioSamples.html

The typing program I have is .......
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, which I have had for years. It doesn't cost much and allows you to practice your typing and improve typing speed.

Also, used to get a lot of headaches sitting in front of the computer but since I bought a radiation shield/screen to hang in front of my monitor, that has relieved a lot of my eye strain and headaches. It tones down the brightness of the monitor, which I didn't realize was so bright and how it affected by eyes until I put the filter screen in front of it. But I also wear glasses now for nearsightedness as a result of sitting in front of computers for years in previous jobs.

Anyway, hope this helps.
I don't know particulars about the MT program, but
my 14-YO took a course from them and it was a joke.  You have to have finished at least 8th grade to take their classes, so that should tell you there they their courses aren't very challenging.  Everything is open book and if you flunk the test the first go round, or just do poorly, you get a second chance to take the test, though you can only get a 70 if you have to take the test again, even if you score higher.   I wouldn't waste money on it because it is like taking some classes from some of the other schools, it is just money wasted and their reputation isn't great and unless they are terribly desperate or running a scam, will pass you over.  M-Tec, Andrews, and Career-Step are good some schools (not necessarily in that order).  I believe the PF course is close to $1000 and you can take the course for close to the same amount at a local community college.
Mentoring program
Allstate Transcription has a mentoring program for those who are interested in something like this.  Feel free to visit the website to learn more.  Click on the AIM Program link, then Detailed Overview.
Advice for your program
Our company hires a good deal of recent grads, though most have a few months of experience.

Let me tell you what I see in their work and tests when they are referred to me because they cannot make their quality audits or they want to test to move up:

1) They have no idea what the AAMT BOS-2 is most of the time; those who do, seem to have just glanced at it. Please, please thoroughly study this wonderful resource and have your students deliberately practice these guidelines.

2) Teach them appropriate grammar and punctuation. Simple basic English grammar and punctuation that should have been learned in grade school and many do not have it.

3) Teach them to never, ever guess and to always use spellcheck. I am usually shocked at what could have been avoided had these 2 simple techniques been employed.

4) Teach them that even when they feel they are at their best game, they should - at the very least - periodically review AND relisten to their work before submitting it. Maybe 2 reports a day or so. Re-read it first for any spelling, grammar, terminology and punctuation errors. Then, relisten to that same report.

These very, very basic skills should be intinctive if they are well taught.

Please feel free to write if you'd like a more in-depth discussion about other trends I see in their work.

Took their intern program too

I felt the intern program was taking my training to a higher level and fine tuning  that training in a way that would get me working faster and make me both more productive and confident when I finished it.  Not only that, the growing experience with different companies only helped cement that training, which is something I will always have as I go forward.   Meditec is not a scam and they are very supportive.

Maybe everyone does not need an internship opportunity, but I knew I wanted one and am glad to have had it.  Besides, that very internship was one of the main reasons I chose Meditec in the first place.   I did pay a little extra for it, but I am worth that investment!    I have been on paid status since the internship and never had to worry about getting that very important first MT job.

Good luck to everyone and God Bless.

Unfortunately this program is horrible and
you wasted your money.  Many people have come here complaining they can't get a job after completing this course and end of having to take another course.   You're chances of getting a job are very slim.
Internship program

Has anyone completed the internship program offered by Allstate Transcription? Did you receive a job offer?  Is it worth the money?

If you're already in an MT program, then do get it and

M-Tec certificate program
I want to thank everyone who responded to my other post about choosing a school. I have read web pages and MT chat boards till my head hurts. When I think I've made my decision, then I read something else that makes me think about it more.

I'm wondering, when people recommend M-Tec, are they referring to the certificate or the diploma program. Some make is sound like you can't get work unless you have the diploma program? After reading their website, I do think they have a more extensive certificate program than the others I was considering. It seems though that there will not be much help in obtaining a job afterwards, but a push towards upgrading to the diploma program. I know a couple of people that have completed a less extensive certificate program and are able to work at home, but their schools had placement support.

Are there any M-Tec grads from the certificate program that could help me out...tell me of their experience? I would appreciate it. I really need to enroll and get on with the schooling part very very soon. :)

Thank you for every one's opinions, advice and help!

I did a internship program...sm
I entered an internship program. I was in it for 6 months. I ended up finding a job and told them I was leaving the intern. While in the intern I was still never guaranteed a job. I did it because it was a legit MT company and I needed the actual work exp to get a job. The startout pay with this company if they hired was 6 cpl though. I ended up getting a job for .065 cpl somewhere though. I have since went up from that rate. I think 7 cpl is good pay for a newbie. I know it is rare a newbie is offered that much. But I am not familiar with the internship on here. So I can't advise you or not.
I don't mean to burst your bubble but when you start an intern or do get a job you will find that you weren't as ready as you thought you were. There is a lot as a newbie I did not know that I learned with hands on exp. An internship was kind of like a transition from school to work. I would advise you to find out the name of this place that offers this internship and do some investigating and research on it.
Good luck to you in whatever your decision is.

Venting - bad MT program
Don't feel bad - I got caught up in two bad programs - not to say I didn't learn anything, but ---- I'm just finishing my 3rd program.  I never did finish the first two because I was so frustrated - DETERMINIATION!!!!
AIM internship program
This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! A chance to actually work without the stress of that first job. But is it reputable? Can anyone recommend it, and will it help significantly to find a job? thank you!
AIM mentoring program

I would personally stay far away from this "opportunity." No mentoring program you have to pay for and work for free can make up for inadequate training. AIM will let you work for free until the last 2-4 weeks of their 12-week mentorship. If you can transcribe at 98% or better on QA, they will pay you 2-4 cpl. Flipping burgers pays better than that! For this "opportunity" you have to pay them $99 (admissions fee or whatever they are calling it). Bottom line, you pay for this mentorship. Will they guarantee you employment? I seriously doubt it.

Check out M-Tec and Andrews. You will get what you pay for. Good luck!
