By the way we remember who Casey is

He was the brave and valiant young man who gave his life for a JUST cause.  In fact, he believed in that cause sooo much that he re-uped to stay there.  It's sad that his mother can't be proud of him for that.   Well, the rest of us are proud enough to make up for his sadly mentally ill and duped mother.

Democrats Cite Report On Troop Cuts in Iraq
Pentagon Plan Like Theirs, Senators Say

By Michael Abramowitz and Thomas E. Ricks
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, June 26, 2006; A01

Senate Democrats reacted angrily yesterday to a report that the U.S. commander in Iraq had privately presented a plan for significant troop reductions in the same week they came under attack by Republicans for trying to set a timetable for withdrawal.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said that the plan attributed to Gen. George W. Casey resembles the thinking of many Democrats who voted for a nonbinding resolution to begin a troop drawdown in December. That resolution was defeated Thursday on a largely party-line vote in the Senate.

That means the only people who have fought us and fought us against the timetable, the only ones still saying there shouldn't be a timetable really are the Republicans in the United States Senate and in the Congress, Boxer said on CBS's Face the Nation. Now it turns out we're in sync with General Casey.

Sen. Carl M. Levin (Mich.), one of the two sponsors of the nonbinding resolution, which offered no pace or completion date for a withdrawal, said the report is another sign of what he termed one of the worst-kept secrets in town -- that the administration intends to pull out troops before the midterm elections in November.

It shouldn't be a political decision, but it is going to be with this administration, Levin said on Fox News Sunday. It's as clear as your face, which is mighty clear, that before this election, this November, there's going to be troop reductions in Iraq, and the president will then claim some kind of progress or victory.

At issue was a report yesterday in the New York Times that Casey presented a private briefing at the Pentagon last week in which he projected that the number of U.S. combat brigades -- each with about 3,500 troops -- would decrease from 14 to five or six by the end of 2007. About 127,000 U.S. troops are now in Iraq, including many support troops beyond the combat brigades.

White House and Pentagon officials declined to confirm the projections, saying only that Casey met with President Bush on Friday to discuss how the military might proceed in Iraq after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki forms a new government. Bush has often said the U.S. military will stand down as Iraqi forces become adequately trained to handle security.

One White House official said there was no formal plan presented or signed off on in Casey's meeting with Bush, only a discussion of various scenarios to guide their talks with the new Iraqi government.

We are entering a phase where discussions with the Iraqis will begin to practically define what 'stand up, stand down' will look like over the next two years, said this official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal conversations.

This official dismissed the suggestion by some Democrats that Casey's approach resembles their approach. A conditions-based strategy outlined by our generals on the ground is a far cry from politicians in Washington setting an arbitrary date for withdrawal, the official said.

A Pentagon official said his impression is that Bush and Casey had no lengthy discussion about troop reductions, and that any projections of specific numbers remain speculative. This source noted that Casey had said that he hoped U.S. force levels would be substantially reduced this year but has decided against such a move because of the continuing violence in Iraq.

I think there will be a modest decrease between now and the end of the year, the official added. But, he concluded, Nobody really knows.

U.S. commanders have long wanted to cut the size of their force in Iraq. But plans to do so have proven difficult to realize.

Before the U.S. invasion in March 2003, the Pentagon's war plans called for a swift reduction, from about 150,000 to 30,000 by the early autumn of that year. Paul Wolfowitz, then the deputy defense secretary, told a congressional committee that the thinking behind this was that it is hard to conceive that it would take more forces to provide stability in post-Saddam [Hussein] Iraq than it would take to conduct the war itself and to secure the surrender of Saddam's security forces and his army -- hard to imagine.

That plan was shelved when a fierce insurgency broke out in the summer of 2003. That fall, top commanders hoped to cut the U.S. presence to about 100,000 by the next summer. But a major escalation in violence in the spring of 2004, along with the collapse of the new Iraqi police force and parts of the new army, forced that plan to be discarded as well.

The result is that the United States has kept about 135,000 soldiers in Iraq for the past three years, with occasional fluctuations to as high as 160,000.

The widespread expectation inside the Army is that the U.S. presence will be cut to about 100,000 by the end of this year, with further reductions in 2007 to perhaps 50,000 to 75,000. That size could be maintained almost indefinitely by the Army and the Marine Corps. But whether those new plans will be realized will depend on events in Iraq, which have proven difficult to predict.

Casey's meeting with Bush followed an eventful several weeks in Iraq that included the death of insurgent leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and the completion of a new Iraqi government. It also followed particularly rancorous debates in the House and Senate, in which GOP lawmakers -- with the encouragement of the White House -- went after Democrats for being insufficiently supportive of the war effort and said decisions about issues such as troop deployments should remain with the president.

Coming so soon after the congressional debates, the report of Casey's briefing served to keep the debate going another day.

Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), who co-sponsored an unsuccessful resolution setting a July 1, 2007, deadline for the removal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq, issued a statement saying the Casey plan looks an awful lot like what the Republicans spent the last week attacking. Will the partisan attack dogs now turn their venom and disinformation campaign on General Casey?

But Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, played down the significance of the reported briefing. The department's drawn up plans at all times, but I think it would be wrong now to say that this is the plan that we're going to operate under, he said on Fox News Sunday.

Warner counseled patience. We have struggled and made tremendous sacrifice to give this nation its sovereignty, he said. They are now beginning to exercise this sovereignty with a young government. Give them a chance to move out. We will consult with them. I'm confident our government will not let them make mistakes that would reflect adversely on troop withdrawals.

Sen. Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, voiced some skepticism that the administration can reach the conditions set for withdrawing troops.

Given current events in Baghdad, in particular, reported on every day quite apart from Anbar province, the violence is horrific, he said on Face the Nation. So getting to the plans either of General Casey or Maliki are a broad sweep. But it is good news to know that there are contingency plans.

And apparently you know Cindy very well also to make such a personal psychiatric diagnosis.  Provide your proof, you right-wing liar.

I will remember that one...if you remember...thou shalt not kill. nm

Oh my! I remember him well. I remember we used to call him...sm
tricky d!ck. He lost the election when he appeared at the first television debate against JFK, slam dunk! He was a very crafty, evil man in my opinion and the latest news reinforces my opinion even more. It was so interesting that he eventually did become president years later and proved to be a disgrace to the presidency.
Just remember

"the South don't need you around anyhow..."    from Lynard Synard "Sweet Home Alabama"

we each remember what

we value most.  I will remember the years of prosperity and delight of having such an intelligent, charismatic leader.  You can remember the blow jobs if you wish.  I  rarely think about JFK in the WH pool with bimbos, because he was so much more than that.  Just a helpful hint.

I remember one of

Yes, I remember very well. nm

Uhh...if I remember right,
It was Michelle Bachmann who BLAMED Chris Matthews for TRICKING her into answering the way she did. She is undoubtedly unqualified to be a congresswoman...let's just get rid of her. She can get a REAL JOB.
You may not be old enough to remember......... sm
the Nixon administration and a lot of the news reporters these days aren't for sure, but I am and I remember how paranoid he was. He was really one strange bird! As far as the foul language, I doubt he could outdo some of our other more stellar presidents from years gone by. FDR was no altar boy.

Any person who takes a public office, regardless of the level, is open for public criticism. I guess that is the American way. But even though there may be damage done to our country, the ultimate time of truth comes between him/her and their Maker. That is one time of recompense that no one will escape.
remember 9/11?
Find me anyone in this country who wasn't ready to go to war on September 12, 2001. Where would we be now? And if you travel, you will find many countries still love America and what it stands for. Why do you think so many people come here from other countries? Having traveled, I have seen it myself.
Are you old enough to remember who
You and Fox News actually think that the former Iran-contra McCain compadre war profiteering arms dealing Contra coup financier, megalomaniac military man who holds himself above the law North has any credibility whatsoever? His notorious flagrant disregard for the boundaries of his own authority and self-proclaimed untouchable status flies in the face of any American with any respect for the rule of law. Get real.
Right. I seem to remember after
9/11 hearing about them being told to shave their beards and blend in with our culture/society.
I remember when my dad used to get
Back in the late 70's and early 80's, my dad worked hard.  He went to school and became a pharmacist in Flushing, Michigan outside of Flint.  I went to school and EVERYONE's parents worked for GM, Chevy, and other car companies.  There was just a handful of students whose parents did not work for a car company.  My mother's side of the family all worked for a car company.  Thank God my cousin, the last one in the family took early retirement 3 weeks before the big financial downhill with the US economy.  My dad used to be so upset.  He went to school for 4 years and became a pharmacist and still got paid less than people who worked for GM with no schooling, all FREE eye exams and glasses, free health care, free cars, free everything.  Boy did it burn my dad up.  We then moved from Michigan to Arizona in 1982.
Actually if you remember
When McCain was ahead dow went up, when Obama was ahead dow would go down. It was a rollercoaster but we could tell which way the dow would go by who was ahead during the election.

With all the taxes the O plans to raise, most people are pulling their money out of stocks, and many are getting out of things that will raise their taxes. The owner of the Miami Dolphins plans to seel before the O takes office. The O's lack of knowlege of how the economy thrives on lower taxes, smaller government, and creation of jobs is going to be one of his downfallings (but unfortunately the country will suffer because of it).
You see, what you have to remember
that matters, to he!! with the constitution or anything else that may stand in his, or as Ms. Pelosi put it, *our,* way. Just like everything since he announced his candidacy that doesn't sit well with him, just sweep it under the rug and forget about it!
Just Remember
The "alternative plan" that 90% of the Republican Senate caucus voted for contained tax cuts only. No stimulus. Just tax cuts. This "alternative plan" would have cost over $3 trillion in lost revenue over the next decade, without investing one single dollar in economic stimulus.

It's hard to be bipartisan when the other party is insane.
You have to remember.....
he has only been in office for what? 6 weeks = give or take? For me (and undoubtedly millions of others) to see this change in our COBRA this fast is utterly remarkable. I have never seen a president move as fast as he has and cover ground as much as he has in such a short period of time. NO ONE can tell me he isn't "working." He is working his tail off. He talked about cutting all the BS spending in Washington and they have line itemed 2 trillion in savings ALREADY! I BELIEVE we will see some very serious change - some things not so fast, other things incredibly fast. I am impressed with what he has accomplished already after decades of ineffective leadership. I wasn't sold on the stimulus bill.....some of it probably won't be effective, but, we won't know until we see the outcome. I hope for good things.
Anybody else remember this?
I think an airline lost a law suit for adding on a surcharge for double-wide passengers.  They had originally tried to charge for two seats, but then changed it to a surcharge, but still lost a suit.  I don't think I'm making this up, but don't have time to research it right now.

that unemployed and under-employed are two different things. Wonder what the under-employed number would be. I have been led to believe it is quite high. I have no statistics on this and wonder if anyone else would know more about that.
Don't you remember what
Janean Garofalo said?  Any opposition makes you a racist.  Had he been a white guy, Bush....say...or McCain, then it would be perfectly okay.  Glad to straighten that out for you.
Thanks for your post. Do you remember

where you saw that?  It sounds very interesting, and I'd like to read more about it.

Your post was polite and responsive. You didn't spend your time immaturely calling others names.  Yours is one of two intelligent posts on this board, and I'd really like to read more about what you mentioned.  Thanks.

Remember Pat Buchanan?

I just watched him on Hardball.  He acknowledged majority of Americans are against the Iraqi war.

They were discussing Cindy Sheehan.  The only words he used to describe her were "authentic" and "has authenticity."  I was fully expecting him to slam her, but he didn't.

Wake up, already.  The majority of Americans are against this war.  Want to use our troops for a real, legitimate purpose and not some invented theoretical justification to get even with the guy who tried to kill your daddy once?  Put our soldierse on our borders with Mexico and Canada.  Let them prevent terrorists (posing as Mexicans because they have the same physical characteristics) from crossing our borders and KILLING US.  That would go a long way toward BEGINNING to fight terrorism HERE, where we REALLY need it, not in some foreign sovereign nation who posed no real threat to us.  Let them do their REAL job, which is to protect and defend America during a time when we've never needed them MORE to do just that.

Oh yeah, I do remember that
Nan was stalked mercilessly by a very, very rude and hateful person.  I hope yahoo got them...
Let me just qualify this, as some might remember me...
talking about affordable health care and I was able to make it, yada yada, are now thinking "she has room to talk, she is on hubby's insurance." Well, let me put that to rest. This is second marriage for both of us. Suffice it to say, I am paying out the same amount of money I was paying out before the marriage. Also suffice it to say, BOTH of us learned in marriage #1 to keep finances independent. LOL. Just clarifying that. :-)
I remember in the mid 1980s...

My clunker was in a coma, and I went to the Chevy lot and bought the cheapest car I could find, a Chevy Sprint.  (Didn't even have a radio when I bought it!)  I remember my 12-year-old daughter throwing a hissy fit and NOT wanting the car because it didn't have a passenger side visor mirror.  In spite of her vain self, I bought the car.  This car easily got 50 miles per gallon.  (Of course, I had to buy a mirror for the passenger side visor and a radio, as well.  LOL)

Whatever happened to the Chevy Sprints that used to be???  If they could build them then, why can't they build them now?

You are way too immature to remember

As a mom of 3 young men, I remember
vividly the day my oldest left for the Air Force. He was 19. There was no war. Then son #2 left in the National Guard in 1991 during Desert Storm.

I have to give her credit for even being able to speak, let alone hold up under fire, right after sending her son off to war!
You may be too young to remember, but that is what..sm
they said about John F. Kennedy and we all know what happened with that election and Nixon's loss, eventual election, and ultimate disgrace to our country. Most would have said Nixon was more qualified and had more experience. What do you think?
Ewwwww - I remember that - sm
If it wasn't bad enough that that was disgusting what was even more embarrassing was when my mom had to literally explain it to my grandfather as he didn't know. Poor gramps, so innocent. HA HA My mom said its not bad enough that Clinton was doing it and she had to explain it to her father, can you imagine the parents having to explain it to their young children.
don't remember which interview

watched so many with all the political shows.  Can't even visualize the reporter.

remember when Rudy

wanted to cancel election after 911?

It died once before, remember? And the once
(which the dear ol' boys in the 'Pub-Club' want to get rid of, remember?), Wall St. and the USA did even better than before. It collapsed because of a major flaw, and too much GREED. The same things we're faced with today. I can survive a Depression just fine. I'm an MT, and we're already experiencing one.
Exactly right. Remember that when you are working...
100% for the STATE.
Actually, what I remember hearing about was ....sm
that it would be like our own personal savings account. I would much rather have that, than have the govt have their hands in my SS pocket, using my SS as they have been doing, and putting the IOU away in a drawer somewhere.

Not sure what his current plan is or if it has changed, but if I get to control my own SS money, I'm all for it.

You must be too young to remember the 50s and 60s.
Can't get past the first laughable faulty premise that would have us believe there has never been an illegal election in the US. Discredits your entire post.
Hope you remember to

MrsM, just remember where all this
hatred that they spew is coming from.  What else would you expect from someone who admires others who do the same?  Poor pathetic souls.  Reminds me of the bully who tormented me in grade school because nobody liked him and he thought so little of himself that the only way he could feel superior was to pick on me.  When I stood up to him and got in his face, he lost his nerve.  Because that is what cowards do.  It's the same kind of bully mentality that McPalin thrives on, and it only impresses those with the same small mentality.
If you are old enough to remember 1960

then you know about the mudslinging and that JFK was going to be the ruination of this country because he was CATHOLIC.   Check this out and you may feel better.

The first one I remember was in 1952? s/m

I was pretty young then (Eisenhower sp?).  About all I remember is big pins saying "I like Ike."  Didn't have a TV.  Neighbors had a dog named "Ike" and I remember thinking that must be what the president looked like. LOL  I remember a lot of talk between my parents about him but don't remember if it was good or bad.

Yeah and remember
him standing up and declaring that he is the "decider?"
Or the reverse. Remember the
assisted living facility, I think in Mass, last spring, when it got unseasonably hot and they could not turn the durn heat off and noone knew who was in charge, HUD or Medicare. I never heard the end of that story.
