I am not CL, but

I am an atheist. I believe that when a person dies, that is the end. When my mother died, that was the end of her existence. When my sister died, that was the end of her existence. The same with my grandparents, other family members, and friends who have died. I find comfort in the fact that they lived the very best lives they knew how, were wonderful, intelligent, compassionate people who contributed to the lives of those around them. I treasure the impact they had on my life. When I die, I will cease to exist, but I hope I have lived my life in such a manner that the people I have known and loved will feel that I made a positive impact on their lives and on society as a whole.

I don't really understand what your question about what an atheist believes causes the good feeling of doing something good and how that ties into a belief in a deity. Striving to make a positive impact on any level (be it on a grand scale or something that affects just one individual) is something anyone should be willing to do. I do feel rewarded on a personal level by many things I do, from my volunteer work to holding open a door for a parent pushing a stroller.
