You are the one who tried to make this windfall tax profit thing an issue. Over the past few days, your posts accusing Obama of being a Marxist/socialist black liberationist theologian have been effectively challenged by alternative viewpoints of "windfall tax," "rebate," and "black liberation theology." The right-wingers and media are constantly pushing for "immediate/emergency" relief from the high price of gas. We debate the pros and cons of McCain's tax holiday/offshore drilling versus Obama's tax rebate funded by an "emergency" excise tax and his other longer-term initiatives, particularly in view of the fact that in a time when we are paying record-shattering prices for gas, Exxon is posting record-shattering profits.

There is nothing evil about recognizing that there is something wrong with this picture and that the oil companies should bear some responsibility in the consequences we all pay for their greed. Rebate coupons, schemes and incentives are as American as apple pie. We are forced to stuff their pockets with these obscene profits in the absence of price regulation. It is not too much to ask that they come out from behind their curtain of corruption once in a blue moon and show some appreciation to the consumers whose hard-earned money "trickles up" to the wealthiest among us. BTW, the CEOs did exactly what to earn this "windfall?"

Maybe you are not feeling the same pinch the rest of us are dealing with. When some of our fellow citizens are making decisions between paying for their obscenely priced medications versus their obscenely priced food versus their obscenely priced housing versus their obscenely priced gas with their stagnant wages, or worse still, their unemployment checks because their jobs are the latest ones to bite the dust and be shipped overseas and the $60 that it takes to fill their tanks to make a thorough job search is prolonging their misery and that of their families, it is reasonable that we might consider all the possible alternatives to address this problem. An energy rebate is a good idea for those of us who are not bent on bashing Obama 24/7 and I suspect most of us could care less where it is coming from.

All Things Considered, September 29, 2005 � Strong global demand for energy combined with tight supplies has resulted in record oil company profits. Some politicians are crying foul, especially after Katrina. But most analysts say it's the market at work.

Prices were very high

What do you expect from Immelt and Zucker on MSNBC? Ms. Maddow is really showing her ignorance to say she does not know the purpose of the Tax Day Tea Parties. This is grass-roots America speaking up. I gotta admit, its not nearly as juicy as soap opera using an unwed teen pregnancy to keep the subject off the REAL soap opera that was happening at G20 and tour. That is what was hilarious!

I think it's high time and a good thing

that RINOs finally declare their true party and leave room in the Republican party for true Republicans. And Specter has, in an uncharacteristic moment of honesty (or senility,) illustrated the fact that every politician considers his first duty to be getting re-elected. I hope that Specter gets soundly unpantsed in the next primary - as a Democrat. That would truly put the icing on the cake.

And about Specter, isn't it about time for this guy to retire? He is a great example of the 'senator for life' syndrome.

The Republican party put forth a very poor presidential candidate in 2008. Maybe they learned from that experience and will return to more a conservative party line. So if a few RINOs jump ship here and there, I think that's excellent.

Government employee morale at an all-time high!
I work at the Department of Education headquarters in DC. Today completed our 2-day introduction to Arne Duncan. Yesterday he had lunch in our cafeteria (Edibles, ha ha), with his wife and children. His wife wore jeans and a sweater and Arne looked like an average Joe in khaki dress pants, white shirt and tie. They stood in all of the lines and talked to anyone who approached them. They probably stayed 90 minutes. It was definitely the highest cafeteria attendance ever.

Yesterday afternoon he visited every floor of our building and introduced himself to everyone. We all came out into the hall and he shook everyone's hand with a "Hi, I'm Arne."

By the end of the day yesterday, everyone was aglow, since this was already more attention than we'd received from Spellings or Paige. Today, however, was the all-staff meeting, and I can say that the morale in the building increased ten-fold by the end of it.

Our auditorium was beyond packed, with people standing in the aisles. I myself snagged a seat on the floor next to the stage kindergarten-style. Arne stood in front of a blue screen that read "Call me Arne!" in bright yellow letters. He insisted that we call him Arne, rather than Mr. Secretary or anything like that, saying his name was Arne before he got this job and it would be 8 years from now.

I know this isn't anything earth shattering, but the change in the atmosphere at the Department over the last week has been really astounding. In the past, we all knew that the Secretary had an agenda that she was going to follow, and that we were only there to affirm that her way was best. We really feel that Arne wants to know the truth, whether it fits with his agenda or not.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Amid record oil prices and soaring gasoline costs, Exxon Mobil's $400 million retirement package to its former CEO is a shameful display of greed that should be reviewed by Congress and investigated by federal regulators, Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan (news, bio, voting record) said on Tuesday.

Dorgan said he wants Exxon Mobil officials to appear at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing to explain how the corporation justifies giving its former boss, Lee Raymond, such a huge retirement package.

He also said the

Securities and Exchange Commission should investigate the deal that appears to shortchange shareholders.

There can be no more compelling evidence that the price gouging and market manipulation which has produced record oil prices is out of control, and is working to serve the forces of individual greed and corporate gluttony at the painful expense of millions of American consumers, Dorgan said.

Dorgan's criticism of Raymond's financial package came on the same day that U.S. crude oil prices hit a record high of more than $71 a barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Higher crude oil prices are helping to push of up gasoline costs. The Energy Department reported prices jumped 10 cents over the last week to a national average of $2.78 a gallon, up 55 cents from a year ago.

President George W. Bush said on Tuesday he was concerned about the impact high gasoline prices were having on families and businesses.

Exxon earned the wrath of many lawmakers when it reported more than $36 billion in profits last year as energy prices paid by consumers soared.

Dorgan said he will push to win passage of his legislation that would impose a windfall profits tax on big oil companies and rebate that money to consumers, unless the companies used their earnings to explore for and produce more energy.

I think a sensible public policy would insist that the big oil companies either invest those windfall profits in things that will increase our own domestic energy supplies, or we should return some of that money to consumers, Dorgan said.

Using them to drop $400 million dollars in the pocket of a big oil executive is simply unacceptable, he added.

Exxon Mobil has defended Raymond's retirement package, saying it was pegged to the rise in the company's profit and market capitalization that occurred during his tenure.

Georgia's Public Schools to Close for First Two Days of Next Week to Conserve Fuel After Rita

Sep. 24, 2005 - Most of Georgia's public schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday, taking two early snow days, in an effort to conserve fuel in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Gov. Sonny Perdue asked for the closings on Friday, estimating that closing all of the state's schools would save about 250,000 gallons of diesel fuel by idling buses, plus an undetermined amount of gasoline by allowing teachers, staff members and some parents to stay home. Electricity also would be conserved by keeping the schools closed, he said.

If Georgians stick together, work together and conserve together we can weather whatever problems Rita brings our way with the least possible inconvenience, Perdue said.

All but four of the state's 181 school districts said they would comply with the governor's request.

One of the four, Floyd County Schools, refused to join the effort because it already planned to close for a weeklong break starting next Friday. Closing would give us two days of school next week, district spokesman Tim Hensley said.

As he did in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Perdue also asked residents and ordered government agencies to limit nonessential travel and use commuting alternatives including telecommuting, car pooling and four-day work weeks.

If demand is reduced, he said, we will have enough market power to hold prices down. All together, we can influence demand within our state.

Tim Callahan, spokesman for the 61,000-member Professional Association of Georgia Educators, said he worried that Perdue's announcement would prompt panic buying.

I wonder if it's going to create the type of panic that we saw a few weeks back that drove prices over $3, said Callahan, referring to the long lines and record-high prices following Hurricane Katrina.

During the price escalation, Perdue and the legislature suspended the state's gas tax, saving motorists an estimated 15 cents per gallon. While several other states considered taking similar action, Georgia was the only one to suspend the tax.

The state's monthlong gas-tax holiday expires this Friday, but Perdue has ruled out extending that tax break because the state's $75 million gas-tax surplus has been drained.

AAA reported the state's average price for regular unleaded was $2.59 per gallon as of Wednesday, but increases of up to 28 cents per gallon were reported Friday.

Planned Parenthood Reports Record Profits, Abortions Performed

Received largest amount of taxpayer funding to date, nearly $273 million.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America released its 2004-2005 Annual Report on June 1, revealing a record income of $882 million and Planned Parenthood�s second-highest profit of $63 million. The organization also set a record number of abortions performed in one year�255,015� and an all-time low in adoption referrals: 180 abortions were performed for every one woman referred to an adoption agency.

The organization is using these alarming numbers to promote their services and gain customers.

�Planned Parenthood will use any means or any claim to lure more customers and money,� said Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America (CWA). �It insists that the morning-after pill will reduce abortions. Yet Planned Parenthood posts its highest number of abortions committed at the same time as its aggressive campaign promoting and selling the morning-after pill.�

On top of its $63 million profit, Planned Parenthood last year received its largest sum of state and federal taxpayer funding ever: $272.7 million, making Planned Parenthood the recipient of $3.9 billion of taxpayer money since 1987.

"During that time [Planned Parenthood] has surgically aborted more than 3.8 million babies in the womb. Just think of all the positive programs that could have benefited from our tax dollars had they not been wasted on such destructive efforts," said Jim Sedlak, the director of STOPP International, an organization specifically created to counter or �stop� Planned Parenthood, in a statement.

These funds, however, have not impeded any efforts for further government funding from the government.

�Planned Parenthood must assume that elected officials can't read a simple annual report,� said Sedlak in LifeNews.com, criticizing the organization for its perpetual �begging� for government funding despite its large profits. The organization�s greed may be because without the federal government to give them taxpayer dollars, the overall general public would not support them.

President Ronald Reagan in 1983, on the 10th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, wrote:

Our nationwide policy of abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy was neither voted for by our people nor enacted by our legislators-- not a single state had such unrestricted abortion before the Supreme Court decreed it to be national policy in 1973.

Planned Parenthood�s desperation is currently seen in South Dakota, where it is seeking support from Washington, D.C., to counter the abortion ban signed into law by Gov. Mike Rounds (R) on March 6. The law makes it a felony for doctors to perform an abortion, except in order to save the life of the mother, and it is the most extensive abortion ban since Roe v. Wade.

The Planned Parenthood Web site that serves Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota denounces the abortion ban, stating, �This unconstitutional law is too restrictive and does not reflect the values of most South Dakotans nor most Americans.�

Wendy Wright disagrees. �If the South Dakota ban did not reflect the views of South Dakotans, then Planned Parenthood could rely on those citizens to fund its attempt to overturn the law passed by the majority of its representatives and signed by the governor,� she said. �But never shy to demand money from taxpayers, corporations, customers or donors, its affiliate director crossed the country to pass the hat among Washington, D.C., elites.�

South Dakota has paved the way for other states to create similar measures. Operation Rescue reports that five other states, Indiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio and Kentucky, have introduced similar bans in their legislatures.

The Louisiana Senate just passed a conditional ban on abortion that would automatically be effective upon the overturning of Roe v. Wade or enactment of a constitutional amendment prohibiting abortion. The law makes exceptions to save the life of the mother or to prevent any permanent or critical injuries. Once the law is effective, those who perform abortions could be subject to up to 10 years in prison and be fined as much as $100,000.

Planned Parenthood is misguided to think that most people are ready and willing to combat current trends by states to ban abortion. Its eagerness in appealing to elected officials in Washington for continued taxpayer funding reveals Planned Parenthood�s inability to appeal to the American people for direct support.

�With Planned Parenthood�s record profits, it is funding a campaign to drum up opposition to abstinence programs and demand more government money,� said Wright. �Americans should use Planned Parenthood�s Annual Report to show government officials that as tax dollars given to Planned Parenthood have increased, so has its number of abortions.�

Abortion protesters call on politicians to reject donations from Planned Parenthood and other such groups.

Planned Parenthood, a self-styled "health care provider" and "informed educator" on women's sexual health, has been promoting abortion since its inception in 1916. This has had a devastating affect on America.

Since the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which overturned most state and federal laws outlawing or restricting abortion, an estimated 48,6 million babies have been aborted, according to the National Right to Life Committee. In particular, blacks are disproportionately impacted by abortion. Is Planned Parenthood deliberately acting to reduce the black population? Is it practicing a form of eugenics?

According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on sexual and reproductive health research, 13 percent of the U.S. population is black, but 37 percent of all abortions are performed on black women. More than 10 million black babies have been aborted since 1973. Black women are 4.8 times as likely as white women to have an abortion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also indicates that one out of every five white pregnancies ends in abortion, whereas one out of every two black pregnancies ends in abortion.

In a July op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, former Bush speechwriter and current Journal columnist William McGurn, rightly called upon the NAACP to be more active in providing alternative organizations for pregnant black women - institutions that will support them rather than speedily eliminate the unborn. He cites the moving words of Alveda King, a niece of the Rev. Martin Luther King, who had two abortions and subsequently changed her perspective: "I remember when I was pregnant and considering a third abortion. I went to Daddy King [her grandfather]. He told me, 'that's a baby, not a blob of tissue.' Unfortunately, 14 million African-Americans are not here today because of legalized abortion. It's as if a plague swept through America's cities and towns and took one of every four of us."

Fortunately, Miss King and others - such as the Rev. Clenard Childress, founder of Black Genocide.org, Day Garner of the National Black Pro-Life Union and Levon Yuille of the National Black Pro-Life Caucus - are bringing attention to Planned Parenthood's deliberate focus on minority neighborhoods. One-third of all abortions performed by Planned Parenthood in 2007 were on blacks, and a majority of Planned Parenthood's clinics are in minority neighborhoods.

A recent video on YouTube showed a Planned Parenthood development director eagerly taking money specifically to be earmarked for the elimination of black children. One caller said he wanted to do this because there are "definitely too many black people in Ohio." And the receptionist simply said, "O.K." Similar incidents in seven other states have sparked a call for a congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood - and we concur.

Congress must also put an end to the $300 million in tax dollars given last year to Planned Parenthood - the nation's leading abortion provider. The phone calls were made by California pro-life advocates in order to test the theory that Planned Parenthood deliberately targets the black population.

Margaret Sanger, who founded what is now Planned Parenthood, wrote a letter in 1939 to Clarence Gamble, with whom she was partnering to promote birth control and abortions in the black community: "We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members."

In a protest outside a Planned Parenthood office in April, the Rev. Jesse Peterson, a conservative black minister from Los Angeles, told the crowd "before you go to bed tonight, more than 1,500 babies will be killed in a black woman's womb."

Planned Parenthood has also been accused of targeting other minority groups, including Hispanics, Asians and Native Americans. Approximately 30 percent of American women are nonwhite. However, acccording to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, 60 percent of all abortions performed annually are on African American, Hispanic and Asian women. A Hispanic baby, for example, is three times more likely to be aborted than a white baby. Abortion rates among Asian women are twice that of white women. Planned Parenthood insists it does not target nonwhites. Defenders of Planned Parenthood argue that the disproportionate rate of abortions among nonwhite women is due to the fact that white women have less "unintended pregnancies."

Abortion is a tragedy regardless of the ethnic or racial composition of the victim. But when a specific population is targeted for elimination, it is an abomination. Congress should stiffen its moral spine.

$3.09 where I live. In the past administrations have released some of the gas that are in reserves to help the people until the prices decrease a bit but, of course, not this president. His oil cronie buddies probably would not allow it.

And how is this going to affect the price of heating oil? Fall/winter isn't far off, and people who need to heat their homes are going to be affected. Some people would apparently rather let their children literally freeze to death before accepting assistance from someone like Chavez. (Reminds me so much of the effect Jim Jones and David Koresh had on their followers.)

Those who believe they represent the middle class in America, I believe, are in for a rude awakening. The rich are definitely getting richer, and the poor and middle class are getting poorer. Soon we will be a nation merely of those who are rich and those who are poor, poorer and poorest.

According to the table on the website you linked, in my state their insurance would cost nearly $800 a month! Holy KRAP, Batman! I pay a little over a quarter of that.

So Obama thinks some welfare family should get an $800/mo policy for free and I, because I can afford my own inrance, have to pay for lesser coverage.

I felt the same way about the war before he was killed. It is wrong, its based on lies, and its immoral. It comes as no surprise that you would not be interested in any viable information on this subject, since you seem to be perfectly comfortable in characterizing US-Iranian diplomatic initiatives as dealing with madmen who hate America for its freedoms (gag me). Sounds like sound byte mentality to me...again nothing new under heaven, coming from an Ann Coulter wannabe who thinks that former POW patriots are automatically qualified to be president.

For the record -

While I am a supporter of Obama, I want to emphasize that I am not a coldhearted murderer, that I do not advocate watching babies die, that I do not go out and actively support abortions of any kind (early or late).

I also do not feel that Obama is sitting there right now saying to himself, I wonder how many babies I can let die today. I think that the relationship he has with God is worked out between him and God and if he has worked this issue out in his own mind and feels comfortable with his decision, then that is his personal decision. I do not think that he is the be all and end all in the decision making process for the rest of us. I think that he has just decided that it should be an individual choice for a woman to decide what to do with her own body...

I do not want to see abortions once again be illegal in the United States. How many young, naive, and stupid girls (children mostly) died when they chose to have an illegal abortion rather than go to their families and admit that they had made mistakes and ask for help? How many women died or were permanently mutilated and could never have children again because after they were raped and became pregnant, they could not face having that child, and they chose to have an illegal abortion?

I don't believe in abortion, I didn't choose to have an abortion when I got pregnant at 15, but I do believe that every woman should have the right to choose what she does with her own body - if she does not want to carry a child, then she should not be forced to by the government.

Now, I think we can go on and on about this forever, and we will never agree, or we can remember that abortion will not be outlawed by any president that is elected, and go on to argue the issues that will be on the front burner for the next couple of years and decide who will serve us best there.

I do have filtered internet access at home for my kids, and I have taught them that looking at pictures of naked women/men is unacceptable, but what happens when my 12-year-old son goes to the public library to check out a book and happens to walk behind someone who is accessing p*rn on the free access library computer? How do I protect my child against that? And what happens if that person happens to be a pervert who exposes himself to my child? Am I supposed to lead my child around the library with a blindfold on his eyes? Whose rights are being trampled on there?

Behavioral problems? No, friend. It is natural curiosity of a 12-year-old to learn about the opposite sex, what they look like unclothed and that is nothing new. Naturally, they won't cop a look at mom getting out of the shower because that would be wrong on so many levels for a young boy, but they will look at anonymous women on the internet, given the chance. We need to take that chance away from them until they are more grounded in their moral beliefs and can control such urges themselves. If the government allows free access to objectionable material at school (where I can't hold his hand all day) or in the public library (where he should be able to check out a book without fear of glimpsing something objectionable) then I really have to wonder at the moral base of our government. Cutting his vacation short due to the Katrina disaster could have affected his record! Must be nice to have over a year of vacation time in only 7 years, and a war-time president at that. Voting Record

Since everyone is at least a bit familiar with John McCain�s record when it comes to strolling through a market in Baghdad with hundreds of his closest guards, or how he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years (except when he flip flops on that).

But not that many really, truly know just how horrific his voting record is when it comes to the troops. And it is pretty consistent � whether it is for armor and equipment, for veteran�s health care, for adequate troop rest or anything that actually, you know, supports our troops.

This is chock full of links to the roll call votes, and the roll call votes have links to the actual underlying bills and amendments. I present this so that there is support and things that can be rattled off when saying that McCain is not a friend of the military. Feel free to use it as you want, but this can be tied into the "Double Talk Express". But here is a very quick statement - John McCain skipped close to a dozen votes on Iraq, and on at least another 10 occasions, he voted against arming and equipping the troops, providing adequate rest for the troops between deployments and for health care or other benefits for veterans.

In mid 2007, Senator Reid noted that McCain missed 10 of the past 14 votes on Iraq. However, here is a summary of a dozen votes (two that he missed and ten that he voted against) with respect to Iraq, funding for veterans or for troops, including equipment and armor. I have also included other snippets related to the time period when the vote occurred.

September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments. At the time, nearly 65% of people polled in a CNN poll indicted that "things are going either moderately badly or very badly in Iraq.

July 2007: McCain voted against a plan to drawdown troop levels in Iraq. At the time, an ABC poll found that 63% thought the invasion was not worth it, and a CBS News poll found that 72% of respondents wanted troops out within 2 years.

March 2007: McCain was too busy to vote on a bill that would require the start of a drawdown in troop levels within 120 days with a goal of withdrawing nearly all combat troops within one year. Around this time, an NBC News poll found that 55% of respondents indicated that the US goal of achieving victory in Iraq is not possible. This number has not moved significantly since then.

February 2007: For such a strong supporter of the escalation, McCain didn�t even bother to show up and vote against a resolution condemning it. However, at the time a CNN poll found that only 16% of respondents wanted to send more troops to Iraq (that number has since declined to around 10%), while 60% said that some or all should be withdrawn. This number has since gone up to around 70%.

June 2006: McCain voted against a resolution that Bush start withdrawing troops but with no timeline to do so.

May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.

April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.

March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.

March 2004: McCain once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans' medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes. Jeez, McCain really loves those tax loopholes for corporations, since he voted for them over our veterans' needs.

October 2003: McCain voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq and to reduce the amount provided for reconstruction in Iraq by $322,000,000.

April 2003: McCain urged other Senate members to table a vote (which never passed) to provide more than $1 billion for National Guard and Reserve equipment in Iraq related to a shortage of helmets, tents, bullet-proof inserts, and tactical vests.

August 2001: McCain voted against increasing the amount available for medical care for veterans by $650,000,000. To his credit, he also voted against the 2001 Bush tax cuts, which he now supports making permanent, despite the dire financial condition this country is in, and despite the fact that he indicated in 2001 that these tax cuts unfairly benefited the very wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

So there it is. John McCain is yet another republican former military veteran who likes to talk a big game when it comes to having the support of the military. Yet, time and time again, he has gone out of his way to vote against the needs of those who are serving in our military. If he can�t even see his way to actually doing what the troops want, or what the veterans need, and he doesn�t have the support of veterans, then how can he be a credible commander in chief?

Maybe cuz it's the same old "broken record"?

I do believe abortion is murder no matter what stage of development. But I can't see how ANYONE could even argue a case that partial birth abortions are right. We are not talking about medical emergencies here but are talking about elective abortions. And even in the case of an emergency, if the mother was someone who wanted her baby, everything would be done to try to keep the baby alive. Partial birth abortion is a horrible heinous crime that should not be acceptable to any intelligent, feeling human being.

Setting the record straight.
It is not spinning someone else's thoughts to ask them a question about those thoughts. I asked you how you felt about Mrs. King. Spinning is saying something like, you HATE Mrs. King. Courteously, I did not do that. You did however do that to me by assuming I hate Bush. By the way, what posts were those in which you expressed your admiration for Mrs. King? You referred to them but I don't see them here. Maybe you were singing her praises on the Con board? Might be why I missed them, as I don't go there.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Bremer was educated at New Canaan Country School and Phillips Academy. He graduated from Yale University in 1963, and went on to earn an MBA from Harvard University in 1966. He later continued his education at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques DE Paris, where he earned a Certificate of Political Studies (CEP).

That same year he joined the Foreign Service, which sent him first to Kabul, Afghanistan as a general officer. He was assigned to Blantyre, Malawi, as economic and commercial officer from 1968 to 1971.

He does have extensive experience. So that part of the movie is an untruth. This is the point that Bremer makes about dissolution of the Iraqi Army...

On May 23, 2003 Bremer issued Order Number 2,[28] in effect dissolving the entire former Iraqi army and putting 400,000 former Iraqi soldiers out of work.[29]

The move was widely criticized for creating a large pool of armed & disgruntled youths for the insurgency to draw recruits from. Former soldiers took to the streets in mass protests to demand back pay. Many of them threatened violence if their demands were not met.[30][31]

Bremer called this argument of disbanding the Iraqi army a cat-like issue with nine lives. In his Fox news interview on July 31, 2006 he repeated again what he said before "...And no matter how many times I answer with the facts, it still comes back. But let's look at the facts. Let's take a minute. There was no Iraqi army to disband. The Iraqi army basically self-demobilized, as the Pentagon said. There wasn't a single unit standing anywhere in the country. So the question was should we recall the army. Now, let's think about what the army...".[32]

It was widely asserted within the White House and the CPA that the order to disband the Iraqi Army had little to no practical effect since it had "self-demobilized" in the face of the oncoming invasion force. This however was revealed to be false insofar as the CIA had conducted psychological operations against the Iraqi's which included dropping leaflets over the Army's positions prior to the invasion. The leaflets ordered the Iraqi Army to abandon their positions, return to their homes, and await further instructions. In the defense of those involved in the decision making process, it was apparently unknown to them at the time that the CIA had done this.[citation needed]

Regardless of what messages the CIA may or may not have tried on the old Iraqi army, the truth is by the time "Baghdad fell on April 9, 2003" the previous Army had demobilized, or as Bremer puts it "had simply dissolved...." The issue of disbanding the old Iraqi Army found itself, once again, the center of media attention with two articles explaining why Bremer did not make the decision on his own.

The first press release by the New York Times included a letter written by Bremer to President George W. Bush dated May 20, 2003 describing to the President the progress made so far since Bremer's arrival in Baghdad, including one sentence that reads "I will parallel this step with an even more robust measure dissolving Saddam's military and intelligence structures to emphasize that we mean business." Readers of the New York Times article will assume Bremer interpreted the President's response to the progress report as a "go".

The second press release dated September 6, 2007 was submitted by Bremer as an Op Ed piece for the New York Times. Titled "How I Didn't Dismantle Iraq's Army", Bremer discusses why the decision was not made on his own, and how the decision was reviewed by "top civilian and military members of the American government"; which included General John Abizaid who briefed officials in Washington "'there are no organized Iraqi military units left'".

Bremer�s article goes into further about how the Coalition Provisional Authority did consider two alternatives - to recall the old army or to rebuild a new army with "both vetted members of the old army and new recruits." According to Bremer, General Abizaid liked the second alternative.

Bremer also details the situation he and the major decision makers faced; especially when the large Shiite majority in the new Army could have had problems with the thought of having a former Sunni officer issuing orders.

Furthermore, Bremer reveals again how he received a memo from Donald Rumsfeld on May 8, 2003 that said "the coaltion 'will actively oppose Saddam hussein's old enforcers - the Baath Party, Fedayeen Saddam, etc...'we will make clear that the coalition will eliminate the remnants of Saddam's regime'". According to Bremer, the memo was also sent to both the national security adviser and the secretary of state at the time.[33]

There are two sides to every story. In all the people listed for the movie who were asked to contribute but did not wish to, I did not see Bremer among them. I wonder why.

Again, I agree mistakes were made. I also believe that this documentary had an agenda, that it was very narrow and targeted one particular part of the Iraq situation, and as usual...there is a lot of the story left untold.

I am looking into the other principles who had input into the documentary...and what I am finding is not at all surprising.

The chairwoman of an Alaskan political party that advocates a vote on the state�s secession from the union said Tuesday that she had been mistaken when she said Gov. Sarah Palin was a member of the group.

A front-page story in The New York Times on Tuesday and articles in other news media reported that Ms. Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party for two years in the 1990�s.

The information in the Times article was based on a statement issued Monday night by Lynette Clark, the party�s chairwoman, who said that Ms. Palin joined the party in 1994 and in 1996 changed her registration to Republican. On Tuesday night, Ms. Clark said that her initial statement was incorrect and had been based on erroneous information provided by another member of the party whom she declined to identify.

The McCain campaign also disputed the Times report, saying that Ms. Palin had been registered consistently as a Republican. After checking the party�s archives, Ms. Clark said that she could find no documentation that Governor Palin had been a member of the party. She said Ms. Palin attended the party�s 1994 and 2006 conventions and provided a video-taped address as governor to the 2008 convention. Ms. Clark said that Ms. Palin�s husband, Todd, was a former member of the party.

It means that JM's voting record shows he has...sm
