Remember the $150 billion in TARP "sweeteners"

That one was sorta like a bribe to get pubs onboard. This bill rider is a bit different, maybe a tad more understandable but nonetheless, pretty hard to swallow, given the circumstances. Apparently, whereas Congress gets an automatic COLA raise, judges' raises have to be subjected to vote. In 6 of the last 13 years, judges were denied COLA raises (leaving their salaries stagnated at a mere $169,300 annually). This particular measure was the only remaining unresolved issue remaining on this lame duck congressional session. They will be getting 2.3% raise, if it passes. Here's a link:

Want to see who was given TARP money so far?

It comes up in Adobe, so I hope you all have that program.

Will Bush tap the TARP funds............ sm

to bail out the car companies?  Initially he had refused to do that, but he has been lobbying heavily for Congress to pass the auto bailout.  Will be interesting to watch and see what he does.  Would you consider it waffling on his previous stance or just following "plan B?"

Too bad the cap only applies to TARP funded CEOs.
ANY CEO should be making more salary than the POTUS and that any compensation beyond that amount should be directly related to the success of the company, i.e. commissions, profit percentage, stock dividends, etc. I also believe stockholders should have more control of their salaries, benefits, bonuses and any other perks.
TARP, both sides are guilty, but O acts like he had nothing to do with it! nm

TARP has been followed by Obama's massive spending and expansion of government.
I have been very critical of both parties and of the previous administration for the bailouts.

However, I am also growing very tired of the current administration's childish efforts to lay off anything bad that happens (in any area) now or going forward on the previous administration, while happily taking credit for anything that might be positive.

We hear the current administration crow whenever there's even a SLIGHT improvement in the economic indicators (ignoring the fact that the numbers are still very bad) and saying that "Obama's plan" is working. However, if one of those same numbers goes down, they continue to blame the past administration.

Now, you can believe that they themselves don't believe what they're saying. They know, for instance, that Obama's plan hasn't even had time to make any impact on the economy. And, they know that a whole heck of a lot of them had as big a hand in the economic problems and in the bailouts as the previous administration had. So, they're basically counting on their ability to put a fast one over on the American public.

Surely, they can't believe that we're ALL stupid enough that we can't see through this. Nope. What they're counting on is that ENOUGH of us will swallow this transparent pack of lies - and I wouldn't bet the farm that they're wrong, either. A lot of Americans do not pay attention to government the way we on this forum obviously do.
I will remember that one...if you remember...thou shalt not kill. nm

Oh, it isn't $700 billion any more... it is
now $850 billion!!, I am shocked both Senators from LA, 1 Dem (Landrieu) and 1 Rep (Vitter), voted NO.
34 BILLION...............
To the poster who said ALL the garbage had been taken out of the stimulus bill, which of course hasn't, I suppose you believe the Dept of Commerce spending 34 BILLION of our money is just fine, especially since they are a huge anti-American group to begin with.   Do your homework.....Dept of Commerce is not the least bit interested in businesses in this country.
Gee, $1.2 billion?
pretty soon we'll be talking about real money!
You will never be able to deny that $559 billion

return on the investments. That and other returns going to special interests.

Think about it. This is an investment. NOT a bailout. They need to get rid of that word.

If the dems wanted to write in 30 billion dollars to the ACORN from future profits....and others....they know this is an investment.

They need to tell the public this.

These profits need to be returned to the taxpayer, and to Social Security and pay down the national debt.

Not more special interests.

That's a big holdup of all the add ons that the dems put on, that need to be changed for the good of the people.

They need to get back closer to three pages....instead of 103 pages of earmarks for special interests.

I thought it came out of the 700 billion as...
part of the consumer housing protection part of it. The way I understand the 700 billion is that is how much is allotted but nothing in the bill said specifically how it was going to be spent other than to "rescue" the economy. The bill did have mortgage protections in it, meaning "try to keep people in their homes." So, I believe that he is saying 300 billion of the 700 billion would go to that purpose.
$14 billion in taxes isn't even a
Certainly, no reason to legalize a dangerous substance, which is what pot is.

Let's reverse all the smoking restrictions and get all our kids hooked on cigarettes instead, if that's our logic. We'll make a lot more than $14 billion!

Stamp out tobacco and legalize pot. We're doing some real good thinking here.

And hey! You! Drop that Twinkie and put your hands in the air! Wipe those crumbs off your lips! This is the Fat Police you're dealing with, buster, and you're goin' downtown. Lookout boys! He's got a can of whipped cream under his shirt!

(Later, at home): Son, I'm so disappointed in you. Why can't you smoke pot like all the other kids?
700 billion dispersed to every citizen would only come to
.
I heard this morning it was over $850 billion...
with added stuff...one particular one I saw was for wool research and wooden children's arrows of all things. The Republicans did manage to get some tax cuts in there that will help to a point so that maybe not so much of the $700 billion will have to go out...because people will be encouraged to invest again. A drop in the bucket probably, but at least a try. Now it has to go back to the house and no telling what they will want to add. The bill went from what was posted on the internet (about 10 pages I think) to 450+. Sigh. THAT kind of experience we don't need anymore of. Bring on Sarah Palin. I wish we could replace every member of congress with common sense folks like Sarah Palin. THAT is change I can believe in. I am sick to DEATH of Washington Politics as usual.

As to Dodd and Frank...I hear that! Not willing to accept one iota of the blame when they should have all of it. And where is the mainstream media? Out to lunch? Can you imagine what will happen to this country if Obama is elected, with a Democrat majority and mainstream media cover? What is WRONG with people? Hellooo. Sigh.
Mccain did say that he had a plan to use 300 billion...
of the 700 billion to buy back bad mortgages and renegotiate them to a fixed rate so that people could stay in their homes. Obama said this morning that was a bad idea and it rewarded bad lenders. But it WOULD protect the homeowners. He can't have it both ways, and neither can you.

Obama has not said how he will fix the economic crisis either. He talks in generalities. He said that yes, maybe some programs should be cut, but won't given even ONE example. He says he still plans to raise taxes on the rich (which are the businesses, the corporations, most of the jobmakers in this country). Now you tell ME how THAT is going to HELP the economy.

McCain has said he would FREEZE spending except for the most necessary programs. THAT is what will HELP the economy. If Obama said freeze spending his base woudl go apoplectic.

McCain has said more specific things than Obama has said about getting us out of his crisis. You just aren't listening to anyone but Obama and the Obama campaign. I am listening to BOTH of them.
errr...$2.1 billion committment....
Why can I not type?
The deficit is coming down. It is down by 18 billion just recently

how do you know no one has anyone serving over there.  You have no way of knowing that.

It took spending 1-1/2 BILLION dollars a month...sm
over years on the war in Iraq to get us to this point, borrowing from other countries, the highest deficit ever, printing money by the government with no gold behind it to drive the value of our dollar down around the world. Nothing to do with the democrats. When Bush became president we had a huge surplus. Did you forget that?
Keating 5 cost taxpayers $125 billion.
x
Fannie/Freddie going to cost 7 billion...
if we are lucky.
Yeah.Like it's hard to live with $12 Billion

8600 earmarks = 6 BILLION DOLLARS!
to that line by line lie Obama told when he wanted to be elected?  He hasn't looked at one page, let one line by line...... thanks to all who put such a thug and liar in office!
Oh my! I remember him well. I remember we used to call him...sm
tricky d!ck. He lost the election when he appeared at the first television debate against JFK, slam dunk! He was a very crafty, evil man in my opinion and the latest news reinforces my opinion even more. It was so interesting that he eventually did become president years later and proved to be a disgrace to the presidency.
Just read today that the deficit is projected to go down to 313 billion very soon. sm
That's well over 100 billion less, but I know how hard it is to shape the words of appreciation for Hitler Nazi war criminal Bush, so the rest of us will just celebrate.
Unemployed? Government will give you $1 BILLION to fix Iraq

Miss Wasilla please chill, a 30-billion pipeline is not God's Will! nm

Figure 2 billion a week for 5, going on 6, years on an illadvised war,
700 billion a year on foreign oil, robberbarons in Iraq, Blackwater, Halliburton, on and on and on.  That's where your money went, folks.  And the average man will have to fend for himself for the necessities of life; food, clothing, shelter, life itself. This is the mess we are in, and we can only blame ourselves for not speaking out.  We had a gov't at one time that was for the people, by the people.  It's gone, folks, and we let it slip away.
Bush inherited a 559 billion surplus nuff said? NM

George Soros is having "a very good recession". Made $2.9 billion.

So, this "man of the people" who funds the loony left and wants all the rest of us to be communists rakes in $billions from the recession.  He's out there picking up stuff at bargain-basement prices just like JP Morgan and his kind did.

Disgusting.

That's good. Lets all stand up and applaud Bush & Co. for decreasing the 427 billion
dollar projected budget to 333 billion (which they are attributing to a tighter budget and more tax revenue).

Going from a surplus to a 333 billion dollar deficit, not to shabby, eh?
and steal another 700 billion! Be afraid, be very afraid. nm

Just remember

"the South don't need you around anyhow..."    from Lynard Synard "Sweet Home Alabama"

we each remember what

we value most.  I will remember the years of prosperity and delight of having such an intelligent, charismatic leader.  You can remember the blow jobs if you wish.  I  rarely think about JFK in the WH pool with bimbos, because he was so much more than that.  Just a helpful hint.

I remember one of

the other speakers - Britt Exhume.

remember that

song by Cindy Lauper "True Colors."   I see your true colors shining through . . .  If you cannot recognize inappropriate behavior in a statesman, you shouldnt be commenting.

Yes, I remember very well. nm

Uhh...if I remember right,
It was Michelle Bachmann who BLAMED Chris Matthews for TRICKING her into answering the way she did. She is undoubtedly unqualified to be a congresswoman...let's just get rid of her. She can get a REAL JOB.
You may not be old enough to remember......... sm
the Nixon administration and a lot of the news reporters these days aren't for sure, but I am and I remember how paranoid he was. He was really one strange bird! As far as the foul language, I doubt he could outdo some of our other more stellar presidents from years gone by. FDR was no altar boy.

Any person who takes a public office, regardless of the level, is open for public criticism. I guess that is the American way. But even though there may be damage done to our country, the ultimate time of truth comes between him/her and their Maker. That is one time of recompense that no one will escape.
remember 9/11?
Find me anyone in this country who wasn't ready to go to war on September 12, 2001. Where would we be now? And if you travel, you will find many countries still love America and what it stands for. Why do you think so many people come here from other countries? Having traveled, I have seen it myself.
Are you old enough to remember who
You and Fox News actually think that the former Iran-contra McCain compadre war profiteering arms dealing Contra coup financier, megalomaniac military man who holds himself above the law North has any credibility whatsoever? His notorious flagrant disregard for the boundaries of his own authority and self-proclaimed untouchable status flies in the face of any American with any respect for the rule of law. Get real.
Right. I seem to remember after
9/11 hearing about them being told to shave their beards and blend in with our culture/society.
I remember when my dad used to get
Back in the late 70's and early 80's, my dad worked hard.  He went to school and became a pharmacist in Flushing, Michigan outside of Flint.  I went to school and EVERYONE's parents worked for GM, Chevy, and other car companies.  There was just a handful of students whose parents did not work for a car company.  My mother's side of the family all worked for a car company.  Thank God my cousin, the last one in the family took early retirement 3 weeks before the big financial downhill with the US economy.  My dad used to be so upset.  He went to school for 4 years and became a pharmacist and still got paid less than people who worked for GM with no schooling, all FREE eye exams and glasses, free health care, free cars, free everything.  Boy did it burn my dad up.  We then moved from Michigan to Arizona in 1982.
Actually if you remember
When McCain was ahead dow went up, when Obama was ahead dow would go down. It was a rollercoaster but we could tell which way the dow would go by who was ahead during the election.

With all the taxes the O plans to raise, most people are pulling their money out of stocks, and many are getting out of things that will raise their taxes. The owner of the Miami Dolphins plans to seel before the O takes office. The O's lack of knowlege of how the economy thrives on lower taxes, smaller government, and creation of jobs is going to be one of his downfallings (but unfortunately the country will suffer because of it).
You see, what you have to remember
that matters, to he!! with the constitution or anything else that may stand in his, or as Ms. Pelosi put it, *our,* way. Just like everything since he announced his candidacy that doesn't sit well with him, just sweep it under the rug and forget about it!
Just Remember
The "alternative plan" that 90% of the Republican Senate caucus voted for contained tax cuts only. No stimulus. Just tax cuts. This "alternative plan" would have cost over $3 trillion in lost revenue over the next decade, without investing one single dollar in economic stimulus.

It's hard to be bipartisan when the other party is insane.
You have to remember.....
he has only been in office for what? 6 weeks = give or take? For me (and undoubtedly millions of others) to see this change in our COBRA this fast is utterly remarkable. I have never seen a president move as fast as he has and cover ground as much as he has in such a short period of time. NO ONE can tell me he isn't "working." He is working his tail off. He talked about cutting all the BS spending in Washington and they have line itemed 2 trillion in savings ALREADY! I BELIEVE we will see some very serious change - some things not so fast, other things incredibly fast. I am impressed with what he has accomplished already after decades of ineffective leadership. I wasn't sold on the stimulus bill.....some of it probably won't be effective, but, we won't know until we see the outcome. I hope for good things.
Anybody else remember this?
I think an airline lost a law suit for adding on a surcharge for double-wide passengers.  They had originally tried to charge for two seats, but then changed it to a surcharge, but still lost a suit.  I don't think I'm making this up, but don't have time to research it right now.
Remember...
James I-hope-he-fails Carville? Of course, that was before the towers fell, so I guess that doesn't count, huh? Please!
