WMD

I realize you're exaggerating for effect here, but how exactly are they going to blow up part of the US? We've got to stop viewing everything everyone else does in this either/or fashion: Either it elides perfectly with our interests, or it's an attack against us that will utterly destroy our cities.

Let's try out this logic. I have no idea who you are, right? But you yourself might have WMDs, and might be planning to blow me up here at my little computer. So--do I go to war with you? Do I (to paraphrase you) wait until you blow up part of my desk before I believe you have WMDs? Or should I just believe it now, with no evidence whatsoever? What if your office was mentioned in the National Intelligence Estimate (as Iran's nuclear program was) as having dismantled its nuclear weapons program...should I still believe that you have nuclear weapons aiming at my desk? Do I get to exercise common sense at *any* point, or do I always have to make the most paranoid move possible, on the off chance you could cause me some damage?

The WMD issue is, and has been for decades, a propaganda tactic to get popular support for war. Nobody (outside the USSR, I guess) has come close to using them on us, ever.
