I personally think that we do need to pay more attention to our own problems than those of other countries.  However, nothing is free.  Helping other countries with, for example, healthcare is simply good politics.  It helps build trust and relations between nations.  We may not be getting anything tangible right now from some of these countries, but what we will hopefully have in the future is support from them.  The more ally building we do, the better.

About taxes, Obama wants to raise taxes on the wealthy and cut taxes for the middle class.  This makes perfect sense to me.  The wealthy typically invest and just make more money and in doing so, don't put that much back into the economy.  Raising taxes is a way of making them do that.  The middle class simply doesn't have enough money to put into the economy.  Everyone is trying to save what little bit they have, but that's not enough.  Lowering taxes on them means they have more money to spend, which again would go back into the economy.  More money spent means more jobs.

As they sang in Team America:

Freedom isn't free
It costs folks like you and me
And if we don't all chip in
We'll never pay that bill
Freedom isn't free
No, there's a hefty friggin fee.
And if you don't throw in your buck 'o five
Who will?
