if i had to start over on a new job i would probably get to make about 7 an hour.  So for an 8 hour day i would make 56.00 before tax.  If i had to lower my line rate to 0.625 at 8 hours, that is around 2000 lines, that is 125.00 before tax.  I think that sounds a lot better than 7 an hour.  This is reality.  My husband was a trim carpenter for over 20 years and was making great money.  he is now working for around 900 a month after taxes.  he used to make more than that a week.  there are NO jobs out there that pay well and the ones that dont pay well are hard to find.  i think us MTs forget what the rest of the world is like.
