Can GERD really kill you? I've got a doc who sounds like she is saying "She has a sister who died of gastroesophageal reflux."

But all my attempts at Googling have failed to unearth anything that said GERD was a life-threatening disease... Do I really need my ears checked or is this something that could actually happen?
