I like to know if work is available 24/7 or if it's assigned each day? If full time, sm...
are you restricted to 40 hours on your time sheet? (some places have labor laws against more than 40 hours) Are you working in a compatible time zone? (There used to be no work available for me at 6a when working certain Calif. and Az. accounts because I started too early on EST.) Are you required to keep a log sheet of patients that gets submitted? Do you get paid for this log sheet? (some places will say NO as it's not "work" being turned in.) Is your invoice automatically created by their software or do you need line counting/invoice software of your own? Is faxing of anything required??? (some places will still fax you patient lists for that day...ugh!!) Can you use your own Expander and is what you're using compatible with their software? Is there docking of pay for errors? How many blanks are permissable w/o turning a file back in to QA? Do they want phone calls, emails, or IM messages if you suddenly need to take off for the day? Do you have to clock in and out whenver you leave your machine? Is there tech support available for software issues? ...I think that covers it now. Good luck to you!
most psych work is included in multispecialty hospital work..sm
contracted to a medical transcription service that requires multispecialty experience because of the hospital work. Unfortunately, very rarely can a medical Transcriptionist these days be given only one specialty when working for a service or hospital. We have to be well versed in multi specialties. The Turn Around Time on demands have increased, and thus the service or hospital gives the MT many different types of work. Learn as many specialties and gain as much experience in different specialties, which in turn will make you a more valuable MT and more apt to gain employment.
I think only for those who plan on an in-house job at a hospital. At-home options won't even be
m
If work @ hospital is low SM
and they have their own transcriptionists, they are probably saving the work for their own people.  In the priority list is making sure the hospital transcriptionists have work first, then the service.  Probably if you are fairly new and their are other MTs working on your account at the service, they may have priority over you as far as work distribution goes.
It's hospital work. The basic four.
because the larger companies can handle the larger hospital accounts.  Acute care just means hospital work as opposed to clinic, which would be physician offices, i.e., family practice, cardiology, nephrology, etc.
I worked for 2 years on site before I went home, but that was just
the hospital I worked for.  You technically had to do one year or so in the office, depending on how good you were.  I didn't really want to go home at first, but they kind of forced the issue. I hear Medquist will hire right out of school to start at home.  Good Luck!

I did 10 years ago and have worked at home doing acute care ever since! sm

You might be able to work at home.
You might be able to work at home if you are successful in passing their course.

Look carefully at schools before you sign up. Andrews and M-Tec both have high graduation rates and their students get jobs easily. They are worth the money.

They are both approved by AHIMA and AAMT, provide personalized instruction with experienced CMT instructors, and have a proven track record. They provide more and that is why they cost more.

Don't try to save money by going with the cheapest school you can find. You'll end up spending twice as much in the long run. You'll spend for books and materials, for references, and in lost time on the job, and you may end up being unemployed for months looking for a job.

I went to CS and work at home, but...
I went to Career Step and had 2 job offers from national companies within a week of graduating. Both of these jobs were to work at home. While I had no trouble finding work, if I had to do it all over again I would have gone to Andrews or M-TEC. Getting feedback from an instructor as compared to just checking your own work would have been invaluable!
I work from home for pvt mds plus....sm

4 days a week I work for private mds from home, and at least 16-20 hours a week for a nat'l also from home.

new mt...need at home work
I am a new MT.....and only a few credits shy of my Associate Degree in Medical Office Specialist field.  I am looking for a transcription job that I can do at home.  I have 3 small children and would like to be at home with them.  If anyone has any info on starting transcription at home, please feel free to post.  Thanks so much!!!
work at home
Do not buy anything. Anyone that wants money for you to work is a SCAM! What are you trained in, MT??
Work at home?
You can get hired after completing a local college program, but it all depends on the college and how local employers view it. Most programs focus on entry-level skills and few employers have entry-level jobs and the time to train people who should have gotten that training in school.

It's very unlikely that you'll be able to even apply at a national service to work from home because they require at least 2 years experience in acute care dictation. They make exceptions for grads of certain schools, like Andrews and M-Tec, because those grads don't have entry-level skills--they look like they have 2 years experience already. They also know those grads have a good chance at making a success of the job.

Ask your instructors which employers will hire you. Ask the employers NOW if they'll hire you. Don't settle for vague promises. If they can't refer you to actual students who got jobs, then cut your losses now and find a better school.

You can find a local job typing for doctors offices, but you'll have to work at it. With your background, you might be able to break into it by getting a job as a medical secretary.
Work at home or in house
What is the difference in training for the two?  Can a person be trained in one and then go into the other right from the start.
Job Prospects after Course - Work at home
One more question..

How difficult it is to get a job working at home, after finishing an online course?

The MT training companies state they have a good sucess rate of employment at home right after finishing the course.

When I checked a couple of the hiring companies listed on their site, they stated you need previous experience working in a hospital.

Thanks!
If you have a good MT education, work from home. Besides
There's not much help going on at hospitals and clinics these days. At least the national services have someone assigned to help you if you need help from home. I wish they had done that when I was just starting out years ago.

If you have already done the right thing and you have a good MT education, go for the work-at-home job. Good luck with your new career!

If you didn't get a good education, neither on site nor at-home jobs are going to make a difference. Just go get a good education and make things easier on yourself and your potenetial employers.
I work a split shift at home
I work 6 a.m. - 4 p.m. and take either two 1 hour breaks during that time or one 2 hour break, depending on what I need to get done during the day.  Works out great.
Great choice for work-at-home jobs
I'm a physical therapist and an MT as well, not bad for a part-time job, plus you have to stay at home; although you are not going to earn as much as you do as RN. Working indirectly with the patient is as exciting as working directly with them. Good Luck!!
Is your coding work done from home? I have heard it was very difficult sm
to get coding work at home, you have to go to work for a company somewhere. Has this changed? I know coders are always needed, but we don't have any openings locally for at-home coding. TIA.

You have not been transcribing 10 years. Your resume reflects about 4 years tops. I am going to put
very little MT experience and now you're pushing software that posters can get for free. There is a problem with that. You need to search YOUR heart ands ask yourself just how helpful you are really trying to be to new MTs or if your lining your own pocketbook because you don't know how to transcribe yourself.
full of questions....
Hello! I am 21 years old looking to do the training to get certified as a MT. Of course I have LOTS of questions. First of all, how hard was it for you to find an "at home" job? And also, is anyone willing to tell me how much it pays? I've seen all kinds of figures and have tried to figure out just how those figures are, well, figured. I just have a hard time believing you can make that much just for typing reports. Any help at all on this would be GREAT! Thank you!
4 hrs may be what they think is full-time
A lot of MTSOs staff based on the least amount they know an MT can do. They may be considering the amount they give you to be a full day's work.

If you are finding every MTSO to provide less than what you can do, it might be better to work for two MTSOs. Rather than changing jobs entirely, get a second job. That way, you'd have TWO assignments of what is, for you, a half-day's work.
room full of jerks
somehow you seem to fit in really well here!
I was also an RT full-time and just recently
quit FT to go PRN. I'm doing transcription FT again as I got burned out at RT work. I can tell you, once you get your line count up, the pay is about the same (although it does take a bit of time to get your line count up), or at least in my part of the country. Just to give you an average, RT I was making $18 an hour day shift other parts of the country they make much more - up to $35, but this is a very rural area with low cost of living) With MT, I'll be making around $16-19 depending on the difficulty of work. So it's comparable.
are you working part-time or full a wk?

hospital pay
I inquired in my area (Southwest Michigan) and one of the hospitals told me they pay $11 - $17/hour.
I want a job in a hospital sm

Do they usually post their help wanted on their websites, or do you need to know someone to get in??  I see ads all the time for work at home positions, but what about office positions?

Starting pay in hospital
Any ideas of the pay for in the hospitals?
RE: Starting pay in hospital
Depends on what part of the United States you are inquiring?
hospital transcription

Ok I have looked at hospital MT jobs in AZ and all of them want experience and almost none of them pay well or even list pay in the ad, your best bet is to look on monster.com or try the specific hospital site. for example a big hospital group in AZ is Banner Health, they have their own website and job listings, so try that direction.

I don't live where the hospital is looking - sm
I actually have two hospitals to recruit for - one in NY and one in Maryland. I will have another soon in Minnesota after I fly up there on Wednesday to find out their needs and look at the surrounding area. These would be for people wanting to relocate. Relocation would be paid.
depends on the hospital
There is hospital near me who will take on beginning MT's who have typing and medical terminology skills. They work with you for up to a year before you go on your own. They pay about $11.75 an hour to start. But, then there is another hospital that requires years of experience. You need to check with you local hospitals to see what their requirements are.
No, it's not your job - when I worked in a hospital (sm)
I was paid hourly with bonus for production.  Therefore, we could occasionally do other work (like the charting) if the clerk was off, answering phone, etc.; but being strictly on production, I would say, no it is not your job.
working in a hospital
I work for a hospital and have for 20 years. I am an at-home MT.. I am a full-time employee just like anyone who has to physical go there everday. The pay is much better and benefits too.. There are some still out there.
VA Hospital transcription

Does anyone know any MTSO who has VA hospital accounts?  I ran across a great ad looking for MTs last year, but did not have enough MT work experience yet to be considered and was told to reapply when I had more experience.  I don't recall who this company was, but was intriged by the ad for MTs and would like to follow up and at least apply.  I saved the ad, but can't find it at present.  One of the things that interested me most was that the company sounded like it really valued its MT workforce.  I am looking for a company to move to and stay with for the long term.

I would appreciate any information anyone can give me.  My experience thus far has primarily been with hospital accounts and I am currently doing ER editing and standard.  Thanks.

working in a hospital

If you have the opportunity to work alongside another MT in a hospital, TAKE that opportunity.  It will be much easier to learn with someone available to help you right when you need it instead of waiting on e-mails with corrections or using IM.

in-hospital positions
You may have already, but also check out indeed.com. They have sometimes in-house positions also.
So I'm still not sure ... but the MT is a hospital employee, sometimes they will "weight" m
dictators so you get a little extra credit for unusually bad dictators. But that may not be a common practice everywhere.

If you are an IC, or at least once you are experienced, you might be able to negotiate a better rate for a particular MD if nobody else can or will do his dictation.

But have faith - some dictators who sound just horrible the first few times will suddenly be a breeze once you "crack the code." You will probably do that much more quickly if you have an experienced MT helping you out, listening to the difficult spots.

Have you tried your local hospital or physicians?

I work for my local hospital and my supervisor hired "newbies" all the time.  However, some clinics or hospitals require you to do a little onsite time before going home, at least mine did.  I had to meet a certain productivity rate and QA rate before I was "turned loose".

I'm not sure if you are wanting to work for a national company or not from home.  Since I have no experience with that someone else may be able to guide you in that direction.  I just know around here, having tons of experience isn't really needed to be hired locally.

Only if this hospital will employ you when you're done. That
