Fair earned wage has a lot of factors from type of work, type of experience, etc. Without those variables, I can't specifically give you a number. I *do* know 7 cpl and most assuredly 5 cpl are NOT fair wages for someone doing skilled labor.

As to the IRS, if you are filing as a contractor, taking deductions, etc and are an employee, do ya really think the IRS will say Awww shucks, no problem, you just keep all those deductions and we'll forget about the taxes you really owe.
