Radiology by the line for one account and by the report sm
for another. I make more by the report though.
Rad pays by line and by report, depending on the account
I have had rad accounts at Keystrokes pay both ways.  I haven't heard of one that pays for reports over 2 minutes, but it all depends on the client.  Your starting rate typically depends on your experience.  Everyone at Keystrokes is super-nice, you will like working with them.  Agree with poster who said get a backup account from day 1.  Getting IDs for your account can take quite a bit of time, so be prepared to wait.  Good luck.
'Unbelievable' said 'one SMALL report'.

Small MTSO

I am a small MTSO and I have two part timers that work for me.  I try to allow them to make a good living but there are costs of running a business.  I do the pick up and deliveries, I print, I buy the paper, toners, etc.  I do the invoicing.  I do the customer service.  I do the QA, etc.   So when I make 2 to 3 cents a line, that is sometimes barely $5 to $7 an hour after gas, paper, etc.   I keep my line charge reasonable -- 0.11 to 0.12 and that allows me to pay 0.8 cents per line.   But if my gals use their brains to use word expanders, templates, etc. they can make $16 to $24 an hour (200 to 300 lines per hour) which to me is fair.    I pay them on time often first and sometimes wait for the check to come in.    But you guys we do not make a lot when subcontracting out.   But if a document is 400 lines I make $8 to $12 for the report and that is before all my expenses.  So we are not jiving any of you.

To Small MTSO

No suggestions here except to keep up the great work and appreciation for your team.

I agree, don't waste your time on the ignorant's on this board that think everyone is out to screw the MT...it's a sad fact, but there are some who just have such blackened lenses to see through.  It sounds like you really appreciate your team and there are more employers out there like you, really there are.

TO: Small MTSO
see above post, it got posted in the wrong spot somehow.
What small MTSO we could
apply for work there too
Look for a small MTSO
like the one who posted above who still values his/her MTs.  I guarantee you there is no real shortage of work if you took the greed factor out of the big and greedy MTSOs.  They don't give two hoots in the wind about you and they'll offshore, contract with MT schools, whatever it takes to increase their bottom line profit. They couldn't care less if you and your family starve out.  By working for a small, and sometimes struggling MTSO, you will help them and yourself.  I guarantee you also that you will make more money working for 6 cpl and actually having abundant work rather than working for 15 cpl and sitting in front of a blank screen all day.
14.5 cpl National, 16.0 cpl small MTSO
Happy, both accounts are California accounts which is a higher pay!!!!
Anyone work for a small MTSO?
Compared to larger companies?
Amphion, Etransplus or small MTSO?
Pros and cons to any of these?  Thanks.
You're definitely in the spotlight with a small MTSO.
Easier to run under the radar with a big company, but I'm sure it just depends on the company. Though, generally, I have found small ones have close watch on QA.
Being a small MTSO myself, the second attorney is correct sm
Honestly, here in the Northeast, the courts will not uphold any noncompete clause written in that manner, signed or not signed.

If it affects your ability to make an income and provide for yourself, it will not hold up in a court of law in the great US of A.
Small MTSO and bad business practices

I think the reason for late/bounced checks is exactly due to a lot of small MTSOs not keeping business and personal money separate and they do not have a reserve to fall back on in case something happens.

I had one that did not keep her personal finances separate from business and some government agency (she was having legal problems) went in and wiped out her bank account...she still owes me big bucks and that was several years ago. Unfortunately, I kept working (2 months with no pay, stupid) believing things would get better and believed the excuses and lies before I found out what was going on and quit, but could not collect because she had no money left and then she just dropped out of sight (rumor has it she changed her name and moved to a different state).

Another one had the same situation as far as not separating business from personal money and bounced payroll checks (I quit when the first check bounced, lesson learned from the first time). I finally got my money from that one after months of waiting. Needless to say, I will no longer work as IC for small MTSOs. They will lie to you when you ask if they have a separate business account and a line of credit or reserve to ensure payroll is on time even if client does not pay on time or they themselves get into financial trouble.

BEWARE THE CONTRACT THAT SAYS YOU GET PAID WHEN I GET PAID because it means just that and you will have no legal recourse of getting your hard-earned money, definite red flag.

I worked for a small local MTSO for 10+ years, through

3 owners, and I trained the last 2.  The MTSO is a man.  He is extremely disorganized, just wants the job done, not interested in providing samples, doctor's lists, etc.   Frequently doesn't answer e-mails, not recognition for MT week.  I lost 3 close family members within a short time, never got a card, a plant, or I'm sorry.  When I worked there I did acute care and I didn't need samples, lists, because I had been there for so long I had the info or knew where to get it, but when this MTSO came on the scene things changed.   He lost the account to MQ, who has since lost it to CyMed, and he got a bunch of clinic accounts.  I left because I didn't want to do clinics, but I would occasionally do overflow for him.  He was always calling me because I wasn't doing something right, but he never gave me samples or answered my questions, so I did the best I could under those circumstances.  Pay is 7 cpl per gross line, which is 1 cpl more than I started out making 10+ years ago.  Never hear from him unless there is a problem or he needs a favor.  Checks are mailed and even though he is about 12 miles away it can take 3 to 4 days to get my check.

I currently work for a small national (about 50 MTs).  Pay is better, MT week is recognized, my BD is recognized, Christmas is recognized.  Not that I expect these things but it is nice to feel appreciated.  I get an e-mail or phone call every few months thanking me for all my hard work and going above and beyond when they get in a bind, etc.   Pretty much left alone to work otherwise, but provided with any information needed to do my job.   I have direct deposit.

I briefly worked for YOG for a few months prior to their selling to MQ and it was the most disorganized company.  I didn't know who did what, couldn't get samples, had to frequently call for work because even though I was cleared by QA and should have been getting pooled work I wasn't.  Deducts if too many blanks.   I still had them calling me to work extra 6 months after I left.

If the MTSO owner wants to report it on
her taxes as cost of business, she had to have the SSN.
Anyone pay less than $800 a month for family insurance?? I work for a small MTSO
and it's not like I make a ton anyway, but the insurance is so high for my family. I feel like I'm just working for the insurance. My husband is self-employed so he obviously doesnt have insurance through his job to provide this so it is up to me and I'm dying here. Any suggestions? We have tried individual plans but it is a fortune for high deductible and yucky coverage. I need to maybe find a larger company to work for where the benefits are a little better.
How do you report an MTSO to the Labor Board - sm

I work for an MTSO that lies about when paychecks are sent out.  We are paid twice a month, on the 15 and the 30 or 31.  When the owner of the company was on vacation, I got my paycheck on time.  Ever since this individual came back, it's the same old s##T all over again. I have heard that this person holds checks until the last minute and it takes around 10 days to get paycheck in hand.  This person blames it on the post office being the worst in the world.  Well, how come during the most busiest time of the year, I got paid on time, when the post offices notoriously are supposed to be slower?  I called the post office over there and was told that I should report this company to the labor board, only how do I do it and retain anonymity?  Any ideas?  I don't want to lose this job YET!  I have something else in the works, but not just yet.  I realize this will probably be hard to prove, too.

Perhaps you know of someone yourself or had this experience yourself that you might be able to share and give some advice.

Does anyone here have a small account - sm

that pays CASH?  (Under-the-table?)  Like for last-minute STAT dictation or something?   Is it possible to get such a sideline job in this field, or would you have to look outside of medical transcription?

How to get a small supplemental account?

I currently have a full-time job with a national, and intend to stay with them, but I really could use a SMALL amount of work to fill in weekends, since my co. doesn't offer overtime except once in a great while.  I don't really want a 4-hour-a-day part-time job, because I already type 8-10 hours a day for the full-time job.  I would probably want to be an IC on the moonlight job.  What do you feel is the best way to look for a small account, such as a local physician's or dentist's office?  If any of you have a small, extra cash account that you do to fill in the gaps your main account leaves, how did you go about getting it?  Any ideas?

I hear it is very small account
Only a few people got on it.  The big one cancelled.
Every report has the name of the account
at the top. Every single one. Maybe you should have slowed down and taken more time on your first two days of work. They call it training for a reason.
Not my C-phone account. Just got a backlog report
x
I think they are paying per report on the account they are hiring for now, They
usually pay 1.20 to 1.30 per report plus they also have a productivity incentive where you can earn about an additional ten cenrs per report. Great people. I would definitely give them a try.
Line on each report..
I was not given that info. I guess that would vary though, wouldn't it? These are acute care reports. Thanks anyway.
pay is per line not per report..

once you get the hang of the docs, it's easy and good $$.  Rad

By Line or By Report - sm
After reading the posts below, I feel I need to add another opinion. I have done radiology both ways - by line and by report - and you can make money both ways, BUT, the platform that you type on is the deciding factor. If it is slow and not user friendly, forget it. If you have to add lots of demographics, forget it. If the spellchecker is awful, forget it. If you cannot use a text expander, forget it. You won't make good money either by line or report if you don't have a good, fast platform with lots of text Expander entries and a good spellchecker. Just my 2 cents.
Per line or per report
Opinions please. I recently had to move on from what I considered a great account (extremely well paying), because the transcription service lost the account and they are focusing on full-time position whereas I want PT. I am working with a company who pays 0.08 per line and was offered a job with another company who pays $1.20 per report. I usually work in the mornings about 5 hours, with Radiology. Does anyone have suggestions as to which is better? Thanks. I don't want to mention the companies because I want to keep it to the subject not start a company bashing. Thanks for your input.
Rad by report, HIM by line
Rad is paid on per report basis, whereas HIM is by the line. It depends on the account as well.
How does MDI pay for Rad, per report or by the line? nm
x
Hmmm...wonder what account you are on..my QA is great..what was wrong, which report, what I put and
what it should have been.  I've no complaints at all about this company.  The account is picky but that is not Amphion, that is their client.  Besides, that what  I get paid to do.  To each their own I guess.
Line versus report

I do radiology for a large national and a small service. The large national pays per examination not report and the small service pays per line.  If the large national were paying per line, I would make a lot more than I do now due to the fact that most of the reports I type for them are very long (some as long as 15 minutes!). If I were being paid per line, I would be happy to type these long winded reports, but I am not getting paid like that by them. The small service pays me per line and when I get a long report, instead of thinking, Oh no!, I am thinking :CA-CHING!! Every account is different but this has been my experience after 11 years.  Good luck to you.

line versus report
I am getting paid by the report and have always gotten paid by the line. Maybe thats my problem. I make my quoata most days, but when we have a lot long reports back to back, I only get half of my quota and that's my big concern. Even with short reports, I usually type 1600 to 1850 lines per day and with the long reports, making only half my quota (64), I had 1240 lines and was just discouraged, as I only make 1.05 per report.
I know Precyse used to pay 1 line for each report; don't know if
nm
I know a place where they doc you 1 line for every report sm
for headers and footers. IF is really 65 characters, fine, but mostly it is not. On a short 3-line report you end up paying the company for allowing you to type it.
some rad accounts pay per line/some per report.
I would call and ask them these type of company policy questions. They are nice people.

This place is for the hands-on side of day-to-day working for a company and those experiences encountered.
Most KS rad accounts are by the report with a few by the line. sm
By the minute in radiology would kill your pay as most are under a minute.

The only reason the one MedSurg account is by the minute is because their system has a lousy line counter that was not accurate, so KS managers told them that we could not use it and they figured out a way to do it by the minute. I have worked on that account in the past when they were in a bind but I do radiology 99% of the time.

Welcome to Keystrokes! They definitely have the best rad accounts out there!
Hmm..If this is the radiology account, I thought they were paying on a per-report basis..sm

I worked for them for a little over a week and we were being paid per report.  Must be a different account they were recenting hiring for or either they changed the pay structure.

At any rate, my experience was less than grand as well.

My account is so good, I feel as if I'm cherry-picking with every report....
Sorry, but I actually started today and my account is FABULOUS. Every report I've had today has been so easy to edit, I feel like I'm cherry picking, although this account obviously just has fabulous dictators as they are randomly falling into my cue.

I knew someone would try to rain on my TT parade.

Glad I've got a HUGE umbrella :-)
Absolutely not! I work for the best MTSO. I am have been so blessed to work for the small company I

I will share this about the MTSO I work for.  I called her late last Wednesday night after Church and told her I was compelled to help out with Hurricaine Katrina in some way and an opportunity arose for a small group from my Church to go to Louisianna this coming week.  Would she be able to cover my work.  She told me no problem without any hesitation and even donated money for the trip.

And I am sure there are plenty of good companies out there to work for.  To compare us to migrant workers is just not right.

How do I get an account and become an MTSO?
What is the usual experience to do so?  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thank you in advance.
Transhealth rad-paid by report or by line? sm
Anyone know?  Thinking about applying.
radiology line versus report
I think the answer is to ask your recruiter at the start about the account you will be on and hope she will be truthful. I was outsourced from a hosp. not long ago, offered a job with the company hospital was going with so already knew the docs and reports. These were very wordy docs and the new company was going to pay us by report. Didn't not take the job because I knew ahead of time the reports were much too long to be paid by report.
Would have taken the job if
only they had paid by line.
Asked up front next time about account and was told
reports were mostly short
and normal. I was lucky
enough to find truthful recruiter. Hope this helps.
Mt's are not allowed to see line count per report.
We have no way to see by job numbers after the report leaves our hands. We never see that job # again, not even on our paychecks, just says piece work.
I have a by-the-line rad report with them and have great counts! sm
I think that some accounts need to be by the line and some by the report. My backup account has short reports and by the report makes more sense by primary has a lot of rads who like their own voices so by the line is definitely better. I do a minimum of 1500 lines a day and I do not work over 8 hours as I have a disabled husband.
You get paid for the whole line count in the report.

Only on QA do some companies (GRRR) pay for just a certain amount of lines or what you actually type in the blanks.

VR is the same line count as text reports - and the whole report.  Hope this helps you.  You might want to check with your company to confirm though, lots of weird stuff going on with some of them;-)

Spaces are not taken into account with gross lines....a line is a line...sm

if there seven words on a line.

or two

one

or a full line of typing...all of the companies that I have worked for define a gross line as 1 inch margins, 12 pt courier font....does not matter what we type in margins or font.....we convert all reports to the 1 inch margins and courier 12 font and then count the lines.  not the blank spaces between the lines.

Hope this helps.

Their ads say .09 per line, 1.10 per report, which you could have saved yourself time by reading.
nm
Futurenet AQ not paid by report any more? Going to line rate.

sucks
