AAAGH! My employer doesn't send me a gift...

Posted By: Alexa Hoover on 2006-12-22
In Reply to: Anyone get any Christmas gifts from your MTSO this year? If so, what? - Juliana

HEY! Ever thought about sending a small box of your home-made SOMETHING-OR-OTHER to your colleagues who sit in a modular Dilbert-kinda home office all day and put out fire after fire as well as answering phone calls ad infinitum? These are people like you and me. So okay, some MTs are focused on receiving holiday greetings, with your nose out of joint if you don't. Did you send your employer a Christmas card? Or call and wish one of your contacts Happy Holidays? Were you an enthusiastic MT who occasionally thanked the company for putting bread on the table? Consider the possibility that because you did not receive a token item, your company was able to contribute to those who have no roof over their head or a cabbage doll to hug when the world seems so frightening.

Who is expecting a bonus/card/gift from employer this year or (sm)

plans to send card/gift/etc.  to their employer?

I thought a card to my supervisor (if she is still there) from MQ would be appropriate.  Actually that is the only person I have contact with anymore.  For all the years I have worked at MQ, someone, either supervisor/area manager, etc. has sent a card.  Hope it continues.  Miss the personal touch of working in an office sometimes.

My second job I don't know exactly how many are in the office, but thought sending a group food type gift if shipping alone isn't a killer.  Haven't been with them long, but they are so sweet, I bet they also send out cards and bet they are personally signed and not just printed.

Did you send her a card or a gift? nm

Would you please be so generous as to send your company gift to me since you are perfectly satisfied

with our job paying us for NO holidays, use PTO earned for sick, holiday pay, and everything else that may come at us in life!  You better believe those inhouse clerks, etc./sups, leads, execs and on and on get their GIFT and a hefty one at that.  Why are we at-home supposed to be satisfied with nothing, but a low-paying job, low work most of the time, requests from company to flex and flex for THEM, but no flexing when the MT needs off.

Yes, I am thankful for a job, and that is exactly what it is . . . . a job (almost).  That is if you consider NO paid HOLIDAYS like all other types of companies give.  Yes, these are hard times, but these hard times are hitting the MT harder and harder each and every year!  It does not affect the office support staff, etc., etc., etc.  They are paid for holidays and whether there is work for the MT or not.  We are piecemeal workers only (similar to sweat shop workers).  Yes, I am thankful that I have a paycheck coming home, BUT I have to WORK VERY HARD for every penny that comes home to me in the form of a paycheck -- without any paid breaks or holidays.  The office staff are the lucky ones -- everything paid for them!

Why doesn't Transtech send emails to

Why don't all of us get the SAME emails?

Why send to certain groups of people?

We should ALL be receiving the same emails at all times when sent out to MT's -- not just a certain group of MT's.

At least management doesn't send emails about SM
the weight of their MTs and the fact the health insurance plan is whereby you will pay out of pocket for your healthcare. Believe me, MQ, SoftScript and many other places don't seem bad in comparison.

Wbx doesn't even send work offshore. nm
.
well then isn't that QA's job to send feedback so that doesn't continue to happen?
nm
Doesn't it bother you that they send work offshore? nm

Christmas gift appreciated, but turns out not to be a gift if there is no work the day after

Christmas Day.  Yes, it was $25.00 (twenty-five).  I lost that much this morning when there was NO WORK.  I had so hoped to have a good paycheck this pay period, and was working very hard to have one -- as I need the money SO BAD.

I was appreciative of the $25, rather than some kind of novelty advertising token with company logo on it, like some MTSO's would give to a prospective client, etc.  Oh, yes, I made very good use of the $25.  I took it and paid my high-speed internet bill, a necessary tool for working my job --  which the $25 was very much short of paying that phone charge.

THANK YOU TT for the $25.

TransTech MT week gift??? OR just low work gift??

Have any of  you rec'd anything from TT for MT week gift yet?

Ditto! Also add that they ignore e-mails you send and send endless IMs!
nm
Doesn't apply if your OSI account doesn't use Ichart.
It is the Ichart only for OSi where you are cheated.
TT doesn't pay for spaces or ExText doesn't
nm
What gift....
I have never received even a card from Precyse and I have worked for them going on 4 years now. The odd thing, however, is that I get a Valentine's day present and an MT week present...maybe they don't celebrate Christmas, who knows.
No gift for me . . . nm

Sorry, that should be employer!

If I were an employer
and observed the way some of the people behave on this board. I think I'd be giving psychological tests as well.
As with any employer..
They expect you to work your shift. If you want a schedule that is flexible, become an IC.
You need to ask your employer how they
count lines. Vary from MTSO to facility. Everybody is different.
No. If you are an IC your employer does
not withhold anything, you are totally responsible for federal and state and SS taxes. Most companies pay the IC a higher rate than employees because taxes are not withheld.

They are an at-will employer
and if you can't do x-number of lines in an x-amount of time with 98% or better accuracy, 40+ hours a week on a strict schedule, don't even bother. You can just imagine the kind of accounts they have.
No, this they cannot do, not an employer,
this is discrimination.
Health insurance company operate like that.
Maybe it's a Christmas gift
in appreciation of a year of hard work.  Does Amphion ever send Christmas gifts to MTs?  If so, why gripe?
Christmas Gift
Those morons sent me chocolates for Christmas.  Unfortunatley my son was here to accept delivery.  I would have sent it back.  I'd much rather have my PAY!!!  They have the nerve to have BONUS pay in their ad for new MTs when they can't even pay the ones that are working there now.  I was on their payroll, so it had nothing to do with IC invoicing.  I think they guesstimate at lines because they are never close to what I have actually typed.  Glad I'm done with them!
Christmas Gift?
My gift  was an email from the company wishing me a Merry Christmas and then they sent out emails Christmas Eve and Christmas day asking MTs to log in and work some;-)
mt week gift
Just ask us MTs from Heartland what we got!!!! enuff said
I received a gift as well. s/m
I really appreciated it as I have only been working for this company for a few months.  It's nice to be remembered at all.
how about gift certificate
for a spa/massage/parafin hand treatment/ something like that to soothe our aches and pains. A custom deluxe office chair or keyboard. I could go on, but I'm sure you don't want to hear my wish list.
I think a gift card (sm)
Wal*Mart, Amazon.com, something like that.  It's the thought that counts.  It's nice to feel appreciated!
Just got a little gift from PMedcom :)
No card, but Im assuming its for MT week!!  :)
Thanks for the MT week gift
Your thoughtfulness never ceases to amaze me. I love Olive Garden!
Did you ever get your gift for MT week?
We received email to expect something in the mail over a week ago, mine never arrived.
MT week gift
received a wonderful picnic throw from Deventure
Oops, that should go under TT gift down below. nm

We get a gift---last year, ...sm
one of those big insulated lunch carriers, the year before that a throw with the company name embroidered on it, the year before a duffel bag.
E-gift certificate from
To use at various stores online...Merry Christmas
I get $100 gift card from my doc plus
a wonderful card thanking me for all the hard work I do all year round, and my company sends a $25 gift check.
Christmas gift-OSi
Got a card, coffee mug with coffee, and lines that day. Also had pay deposited a day or so earlier, and that's much better than I've heard from other companies, at least pay-wise.
It is really bad when you "EXPECT" a gift.

Gift card
Hey, maybe for someone an extra $25 would come in handy. We do not know each others situations. The one thing I do know is the amount of income lost this year as compared with the past.

No, the poster was saying that it would be nice to be recognized, that we are not computers placing words into computers, that there is actually someone somewhere making sure that the work is accurate, on time, and profitable. None of us have our collective hands out..
That is an excellent gift!

I love aprons - it's kind of neat to get something with your company's logo on it, usually those are things you can't buy.

Do you ask your employer's permission to do everything
in your life?

I don't. I did what was best for me.

They purchase my skills and expertise from me while I am on the clock for them. I don't share their secrets with the enemy nor vice versa. I have maintained my quality and production the entire time I've worked for them.

I don't ask for permission before I go do what I need to for my household.

You're right. MQ doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Spheris would not feel the same way, probably.
MDI is very good as an employer, think they
have IC status but not sure and also may have SE status.  They are flexible as long as the accounts stay in turn-around time.  They are good to work for.  I have been there since 3/2004, started part time, went full time in 05/2004 after I tried them out to see how I would like it.
To tell current employer or not? SM

I am currently looking for a new job.  I love it where I work now, but need benefits and they do not offer them.  On applications they want to know if they can contact current/prior employers.  I certainly don't want to put no (as I'm quite sure that would raise a red flag), but I just worry how my current employer will react if he gets a call from prospective new employers asking about me.

Should I write my current employer and explain why I'm looking for work rather than let him be shocked to get a call out of the blue?  Guess I already know the answer, but am so worried.  Would hate to burn my bridges if the new job doesn't work out.  Ugh...I sound terrible.

What would you do?

Thanks!

By all means ask. I have and my employer was
They want you to be as productive as possible. If you're not producing lines, they aren't billing and receiving for them either!

Do you always believe what your employer tells you?
I worked for a local company and transcribed university hospital and VA reports.  The company was pretty busy - 100 MTs across the country and the owner whined all the time about how he couldn't make ends meet and couldn't pay MTs more - blah, blah, blah - but I certainly never got any tissues out during these meetings.  We found out from the bookkeeper later that the company charged and got18 cents per line and that was 6 years ago.  Then he increased his charge to a large account the next contract bid and lost it and and didn't have the guts to lay off by senority and just let everyone keep working with promises they were seeking new accounts that didn't happen very quickly at all while we were all out of work and scrapping to find what we could.  It is called GREED.
been there, done that - on the employer side..sm
not a lawyer, and not MT environment at that time. Did briefs, etc when working as secretary in legal dept of company (factory type/employee paid piecemeal wages for on-site work). Unless you can prove the time card was fraudulently filed (the hours were not actually worked), the company is responsible for payment of the OT. The advanced approval is not part of the law, only of the company policy. The company's recourse is through discipline for failure to follow company policy, but cannot withold pay. The laws have been tweaked some since then, but not to that point.
If you are IC, the company is NOT your employer.

Best employer who provides equipment
I may be changing jobs soon.  I will spare you the gory details of why.  Anyway, can someone tell me who you consider to be the best employer?  I need one who provides the employee's equipment.  I am also looking for one that does not offshore, pays well (I have 25 years experience), good insurance, steady work, minimal ESL, HOPEFULLY DAY SHIFT OPENINGS M-F, and let's see, I guess that would mean I am looking for the perfect employer!   Opinions invited!
As long as the new employer does not
contact them, and you can request they not, how would they know??
