Been at this job over 35 years.  I made more in 1987 than I do now.  Four years ago I was making $25+ an hour and not really working hard.  Now there are many more ESLs and less and less and less work as it is being offshored to India and China and other countries that are deciding to do it also.  My last pay check they had to supplement it as I was not even making minimum wage for the state I live in because for some reason the work was running low.  Also the electronic medical record is taking over in most hospitals and clinics now, and the doctors will be able to do most of their own work.  I am too old now (57) to be looking for a new career, but this would definitely not be it if I were young and needed a job.  I just hope that I can hold out another 6 years and still be working in this profession, otherwise I will really be hurting.  My husband passed away and left me some money that I can get when I am 59-1/2 but the state of the economy the way it is, may not have any of that left by then either.

If she has a family to support this is not the profession to be going into.  If she wants to get into this so that she can stay home with her kids, trying to keep kids occupied and trying to make a living transcribing would not be good.  A lot of disturbance from kids I would think.  I love being at home to work but I have no one here disturbing me or anything so it is not bad; but some people really need to have the office personnel around (which I used to like, and took me about 4 years to get used to being at home alone working).

This is not the profession to be in anymore, might want to try Health Information Technology instead.  I believe coding and billing is even going away to other countries to be done, but then at this point, what isn't?

Good luck - I have tried to talk a friend of mine out of doing this too, but not too successful.  And this lady has never worked on, nor does she own a computer, and she has not typed since high school (about 40 years ago), and she still insists this is what she wants to do.  That will be a real rude awakening for her too.
