Well I think they would just continue to hire SEs and then give them an option, just my opinion. I
HOPE I am wrong believe me. MQ will do whatever it takes to get where they need to go and that is a fact. I just wish I knew the game so I could play it too. You know the saying, you name the game and I will play it too and better than you do. Why do you think they are so sneaky about everything. They dont want us to get a hands up on them. This is a true cat and mouse game. Just like any corporation. Get them with their pants down. Use them while we need them and then move them out. See it all the time. BUT better to keep everyone in the dark before the end comes for sure so employees dont rock the boat.
I agree, but just wanted to give her her due as far
x
Just wanted to give some validity to your points.
This indeed happens. I was the victim of misrepresentation.  I was contacted by email and had this company praised to me by an MT who had also gone on the forum and just raved up and down about the company.  When the good samaritan MT took our conversation to email and put me in contact with her supervisor, it was the same email address. Is that bizarre or what?? Did she think I was stupid and wouldn't notice who I was writing to.  That did it for me and I was really shocked because up to that point I was naive that someone would stoop so low to misrepresent their company. If someone is that desperate, I want no part in it.  It is NOT a good sign....
I am working to support myself so running out of work constantly, is not an option.
I realize there are slow times, but a lot of places offer backup accounts. Why put all of your eggs in one basket. I'd starve.
Don't think there was one. And they really wanted you to NOT work the weekends, too, unless you

I don't work there but wanted to apply

I wanted to work for Keystrokes but she hired me a month ago
and then never followed through. I think that they are a great company, at least the friends I have that work there think so, but it seems that hiring is their weak spot. I should apply for that. I am organized and would never let someone slip through the cracks. I am going to call their office on Monday to be the squeaky wheel.
I love the company I work for and I just wanted to share
that with you all so that if you are not happy, realize there is hope out there.  I worked for Healthscribe/Spheris for over 2 years until I found this position.  I am a SE for MDI out of Maryland and I make 10 cents per 65 character line including spaces.  This is a great smaller company that does not offshore.  I am left alone to do my work but I have somebody there if I need any questions answered, etc.  QA is wonderful too.  They didn't dump me into an account full time, they let you ease into your account over a 2 week period doing 5 reports a day so you can work your other job until you are taken off of QA.  I was off QA in a week.  My account is great, the platform is great (Bayscribe), production Expander is user friendly.  For all you unhappy MTs, there is hope out there.
Burnout...wanted to work smarter, not harder.

It seemed like I was sitting at my desk for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, just trying to pull the bare minimum.  I had to hop around from one hospitals operating system to another and to another constantly...and if you've ever had the pleasure of doing that, you know that lines don't come easy that way because you spend all your time waiting for things to load and what not.  There just wasn't enough work to stay on one account all the time, the way I think it should be, so instead of becoming an angry and bitter employee, I left.

They really did try to make me happy, but all they could offer were more hours, or more accounts, and like I told them, I simply wanted to work my 8 hours and make a decent living.  Had a really hard time doing that over the winter.  I think they overhired but I never asked that question head on.  It was a great company when they first started out, but then got really big really fast.  Great benefits though, if you can make the lines.

If I needed to get my foot in the door, I'd work for them, get the experience, and move on.  It's that kind of place.  But during a moonlighting gig I tasted freedom, more money due to a more efficient way to work, and better overall work environment, surrounded by people who truly loved their jobs, and when I was happy to log on for THAT job, and got sick to my stomach when I had to log on at DVHP, well that's when I knew it was time to be on my way.

Referral?
I would like very much to be in your shoes.  Does your company need more help on a part-time basis?  Care to give a referral to me?  Please feel free to email me privately if you prefer.
REFERRAL
I am responding to your post on MTstars. I am looking for parttime work, 20 hours per week, Sat, Sun and Mon if available. Am currently working Sat and Sun 12 to 7 am and cannot keep those hours up. I would love to work for a happy company and get praised now and then.

Jean
I get what you are all saying about them not having to give give you work, but...
I guess I just figure that as an IC, I am basically my own business and it is my responsibility to make sure that the work is done when it should be. I just think that if the standard of the company is 24 hour TAT then that is what I am agreeing to do when they hire me. There are advantages for both of us to the IC senerio, they do not have to pay benefits, or take care of collecting and reporting the taxes, and I have to adhear to the 24 hour TAT (or what every thier standards are) but can do that during hours that are convenient to me. Of course it is better for the company if they know exactly when I am going to be sitting at my desk and typing that is why they have the option of hiring employees. Just my opinion and wanting things to be like they used to be.. I guess I have to get out of my time warp or look a little harder for a company who really knows what IC status means.
referral bonus? ; -)
nm
referral bonus?
Does Transtech pay referral bonuses?
TT referral bonus
Thank you, any idea how much it is?
Companies that pay a referral fee?

I'm going to apply there (and anywhere where full time is 35 hours or less).

If you work at such a company and want me to say you referred me to it, let me know.

E-mail me.

How much do you make per referral?

Could it be due to the referral bonus offered?
:D
Whatever..as I said..I quit them...wish I were a recruiter..could use the referral..but as you see m

Referral bonuses not paid - that's NOT RIGHT. nm
Not right at all.
Anyone get a referral/hiring bonus?
I've got over 25 years acute care, heavy emphasis on OPs and ESL, and I'd prefer something that's gawd-awful flexible as I live on a ranch and occasionally lose a couple hours at a time when the SO needs help with the cattle or horses or even just opening gates while he's on the tractor. In theory, at least, I am capable of 1500 lines a day with the typical household distractions. I'm okay with one weekend day (or preferably even a 4/4 split), but not an entire 16-hour weekend. My ideal would be where they tell me how much work they want done in a day and then leave me alone to do it whenever I want to (yes, I'll put down the crack pipe now).

If anyone works for this utopian MTOS and gets a hiring bonus or even knows where I can go to find it, please let me know.
i smell someone doggin for a referral ... not nice!
I work for them too, and albeit, a good company but not a bed of roses.  TONS of changes seem to be going on all the time ......... stop sniffin around for that 750 bucks. It's embarrassing.
They must be advertising increased referral bonuses again.

They don't offer sign-on or referral bonuses-SM

As far as the mixed messages you are getting on whether it is a good place to work, I think that if you know what you're doing (I mean really know and not just think you have XX years' experience and so that means you are great) you would have a good time working for this company.

If you have really limited experience as far as types of dictators/type of work and can't do ESL, it isn't the place for you.

Yes...Career Step has a referral program where you receive something like sm
50.00 for every person who signs up for Career Step through you. I BET they are affiliated. How unprofessional can one co. be?
spheris has a hard time paying their referral bonuses as well.
Spheris has a hard time paying for referrals too...just put you in a drawing for some prize. if you win, great if not, then who cares.

I currently work for KS..If I were you, I would give (sm)
it maybe a little more time, just to see if it gets better.  But as soon as you really think it's definitely not for you, I would contact the client manager in the office and tell them it's not working out for you on this account.  They have been more than fair with me and I believe they will do all in their power to accommodate you. If you don't know for sure who to contact about it, talk to Becky and she will either help you or direct you to the right person. Good luck!
I also work both until I am sure new job will work out. Then give 2 weeks.
:+
Thank you! Just wanted I wanted to hear!
nm.
I don't work for them, but can give some info

I interviewed with them several months ago.  For level 3 acute care, I was offered 10 cpl for IC, 11 cpl over a certain number of lines per week.  For IC, line requirement was 1000 lines per week and seemed that they would be very flexible.  Use your own computer if IC.

I was also offered 8.5 cpl for employee status (with incentives depending on lines per hour worked).  I think they required 20 hours per week and have to keep an average of at least 150 lines per hour (it sounded like they had a time clock system).  They provide the computer if employee status.

Everyone I spoke to was very nice, especially the recruiter.  I turned the offer down due to reasons not relating to the company in particular.  They did tell me that they had a lot of ESL (the test consisted of all ESL), but I don't know if this would apply to ER.  Hope this helps.

Ask for extra work, they are probably willing to give it if it's there. nm
nm
There is another option, DO SOMETHING ELSE!

Of course not! You gotta think outside the box. If this profession bothers you that much, learn to do something else instead of whining for years on end! It's no one's fault that you're stuck in employment neutral but your own.

That's one option...
but I would probably do a different shift.
You should have had the option of
I haven't been with them long.  I work a 12 hour window on second shift.  They prefer that you keep the same schedule for at least 6 months.
Yes PT is an option sm
Supervisor just sent out an email this week in fact encouraging us to use our employee referral program to find PT people.  They are especially seeing PT weekend help or 2nd 3rd PT help.  I don't know any other MTs in my area who are interested so the referral program ($500 for finding people that stay with the company) is not of any use to me.  We definitely need extra coverage on the weekends so those of us here already don't have to do OT everyweekend.  OT is not because of turnover it is because the account has grown and they can't keep up with current employees on the weekend schedule.
Not an option?
Then I suggest you get out of this business right now, because it's turned ugly in the past decade.

Trust me. You WILL earn less than you did 10 years ago.

Of course, you could stick to your other option ... unemployment. Enjoy that!

I wish you folks would stop whining for compassion, when you're so quick to turn your noses up at what the rest of the 'real' world has been going through.

Or is it only a tragedy when it happens to YOU?

Sorry if I don't get all teary-eyed at the thought of you have to 'settle' for the GOING RATE!!!!!!!!!

Form your own company. Then you can pay whatever you want. (And I'll guarantee you wouldn't be paying anyone else 11 cpl!!!!)
I work there and am very happy. Give 'em a try!
Very professional, accommodating, and fair.
Do you mean in addition to your reg Friday work? When do they give it to you?
nm
Forbid? This is the USA! You give them 8 hours work...sm
for 8 hours pay, or 1000 lines for whatever rate. They can pay me for the other 16 hours in the day and then forbid me. Can we forbid them to have other employees? Wake up ladies!
Majority of MTs say just give me the work and leave
x
Give a 2-week notice, but work less
therefore, you will not be out of much money if they indeed do not pay you.  Also, if you leave, be well informed that you probably will not make what you are making now at any other company right off the bat.  You said you have been at this place for years, so you will have to build up your income again and pay.  Sad to say, but they probably have people who can do the job at less money now and are willing to sacrifice a good employee to have a bigger cut of the pay that they can get cheaper.  I wish you the best, but I do not think it is personal.  I believe it is business and you generate too much income away from them.  Good luck and I hope you find another good home.
give the work to the busiest & most efficient
nm
Then they should give that work to those who have a shortage. Otherwise, they are overhiring. nm
x
Maybe the company you work for would give you an advance? sm

Depending upon where you work, how long you have been there, size of the company, etc., that might be a consideration.  Also, maybe other temporary work, like Kelly Girls (if they even have that anymore).  I know we used to have temps in our office that were paid every week.

The pawn shop idea might be a good one.  I think if you don't have the money in 30 days, you can just pay the interest or whatever.  You wouldn't lose the instruments.  If you are willing to part with someone, ebay and Craigslist can provide some quick cash.  Good luck to you.  I am my sole support, and I have been in tight situations before and know how scary that can be.  My heart goes out to you.

To: "I don't work for Axolotl." Give me a break...sm
The post you took the time to critique may be been riddled with typos, but your's is riddled with ignorance. This is a message board, dear. What an MT posts here can hardly be compared to the confidential legal documents in a patient's permanent medical record. To come here and judge a person's qualifications and skill set based on a few statements quickly jotted down in a post is not only unwarranted, but arrogant, asinine, etc. I'm so tired of seeing professional MTs being picked apart because of a few typos on a public forum. I know this doesn't happen on other message boards. Why here??

I don't take the time to proofread the random phrases I post here like I do with the reports I transcribe. I seriously doubt many others do either.

This site is by far the most negative forum on the web. Inflammatory, negative remarks don't add to the conversation or benefit any of us. Frankly, I'm tired of reading them.
Work not taken-Give company a chance

I have been with Transcend for almost 6 years and while they are not a perfect company they are better than most.  There have been mergers in the past-I actually came from the other MDI (which was a much more laid back company).  As far as I've seen with past mergers you get to keep your work.  They don't take you off it and give it to someone else.  That makes no sense to have to train new MTs for your accts and you on something else.  I know you are unhappy that you have to make a change but give Transcend a chance.  They are a good company. Is it a good fit for everyone?  No, but you won't know until you give it a chance with an open mind.  And before the bashers get on and say I am management, I am not, just another in the trenches MT who has worked for other services in the past. As far as outsourcing, I know it is done but as far as I can tell it is not a lot.  I work on 2 different platforms and both have plenty of work and have had for quite a while now.

MTSOs also have the option
of walking away from a client who is not willing to pay an adequate rate that is required to get the job done. The money that the MTSOs save by using overseas MTs is spent on Editors who basically have to redo all of the poor poor quality reports.

If you are a building contractor and someone calls you and tells you they want a screened porch built. You as a contractor know what it's going to take to build that porch using quality materials and quality labor. If it takes $5000 to build the porch, are you going to let the homeowner tell you to do it for $3000 when you know it's not possible. Guess what...the contractor walks away and tells the homeowner they'll have to find someone else who can do it for that rate. MTSOs have the same option.

There is NO excuse for offshoring. There never will be.
You don't have to have it overnighted though. Just an option
I just told them to mail it.
Email me. I may be able to have an option.
nm
There is always the option of gaining your own
would be an option, when specs do not meet QA's approval.  I do not, however, believe that the executives side with MT's at all, but always QA.  The accounts I have, I am the executive manager, MT, QA (notice the order of importance).  I do not think there are people getting into this field because they do not give a crap.  There is too much to learn before you can really catch a break and land your first job.  So, I totally disagree.
Not an option where I live.
There are 2 hospitals in a 50 mile radius and they only employ 2-3 MTs and rarely have openings.  It is very rural here.  I haven't had any trouble finding work from home as an IC, but want to change to employee status for health insurance since my husband is changing careers and won't be getting ins. any longer.
