Anybody watch Mystery Diagnosis on Discovery Health?

Posted By: Rad MT on 2007-08-24
In Reply to: Yes being in this field and/or having had chronic "mystery" health problems (sm) - Lisa

Amazing how people go for YEARS without the correct diagnosis or being treated for something they don't have.

Saw on Discovery Channel sm
Special showed Nigerians conning people with phony history, etc., and the poor donors being lied to. It's a horrible situation both for the donor and recipient. The only ones who benefit are the con artists big $$$$.
Yes, I enjoy Discovery Channel.
I'll watch for that. I can add it to my DVR recordings, too.

I watched a show called The Falling Man last night on Discovery, SM
a show about one of the people who jumped from the World Trade Center. Very moving.
Sorry about your diagnosis, have you
perhaps listened or read anything regarding Montel Williams? I know he has suffered for years now with the same and talked extensively regarding this. I think perhaps he might have written a book but not 100% about that. Talking about the flour, I started to cook something about 4 months ago and not a drop of flour here in the house. My hubby cooks and uses none and I am the only 1 who has bought sugar and only for the coffee I have- 1 cup a day. I am not diabetic but have suffered extensively with leg pain (drs diagnosed neuropathy??) but as far as treatment, nothing. Sometimes it wakes me at night, only at night, never leg pain during the day. My hubby also tries to buy organic if possible, use very little salt, mostly herbs and spices and used to drink the sodas but after our marriage a few years back, came off those eventually and water now. I do drink some occasional milk as I really love that. Gosh, I have some honey in my kitchen, have tried that in coffee before but just not the same. Don't know what else I can try... What kind of problems were you having when your MS diagnosed? I know this is usually a dx that comes in earlier life so I do not feel at all this is my problem but just wondering about yours and what do you do to alleviate some of the leg pain you talk about, i.e. heat, etc. Thanks
My diagnosis...
When I told my doctor I needed testing, had all the symptoms of a thyroid problem. Your TSH should be, hmmm say around 5.5 and mine was over 1000 so very much a problem. I was called and told immediately to see an endocrinologist. You can, if not brought under control, suffer severe problems with hypothyroidism as in hyperthyroidism, either one can be potentially fatal. I recently (about 4 months ago) had a battery of tests done and a test that is very revealing of thyroid is a thyroid peroxidase- normal 0-34 and mine 283. I am on thyroid each and every day, even as this test taken. They at first thought mine Hashimoto thyroiditis which in itself very serious. Have been diagnosed since the late 90s and have the hair loss, weight gain, dry skin but then again, as you were talking about her behavioral problems, mine can go along with aging like hers might go along with being a teenager. I had a son who when becoming a teenager tended to withdraw, sullen but I expected that from a teenager. I think some might come with the territory.
diagnosis
I would say you are constipated....

carefully review your diet, medications and get your thyroid check....

imho....

Mystery shopping...Has anyone taken part in any of these jobs with a reputable company?

Mystery Shopping
How are you paid? Is it a reimbursement thing? Also, did you pay a membership fee? Thanks!
re:mystery shopping
I belonged to a few. I rarely did the shops. Some only pay like 10 or 20 dollars. Some are not fun. Many were too far away. And a lot of gas stations for some reason, for example you had to take pictures with a digital camera of the inside if they had a store, certain areas outside, the bathroom, etc. One was a vacuum shop - I don't even remember what that one entailed, didn't do it. The restaurant ones are nice, free meal for 2 usually, but of course not too many of those! Free membership for the ones I joined. Definitely not a dream job to make lots of money. Could be interesting though and get you out of the house.
I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. NM

I wonder if that is a correct diagnosis

Her symptoms sound more like what a couple of people I know experienced with cardiac arrhythmia. I don't know the exact diagnosis, but one of them was treated with ablation and is doing well, and the other had a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted and is doing well. These women were both in their 30s when they started experiencing symptoms.

I was a military wife for a long time - there are some good doctors in the military but they can be few and far between. I hope your friend will ask to be referred to a non-military cardiologist.

I do some mystery shopping. sm

These are the ones I contract for. I could be out and about every single day if I took all of the jobs they assign.
My current cat doesn't watch much TV, but my last one liked to watch hockey. sm
He would sit in front of the TV and swat at the puck now and then. The only time my current 4-year-old cat watches TV is if the TiVo restarts for some reason and that little animated video comes on with the dancing TV and the loud music. He's fascinated by that and will come running to sit and watch it.

Mystery shopping...Has anyone done any work with reputable mystery/secret shopping companies???
Melanosis coli diagnosis
Had the above diagnosis and the physician tried to emphasize that I took laxatives and should not- HOWEVER, the last time I took them was over 40 years ago after I had my child. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this and besides the laxatives, what else could cause this? I eat a lot of olives, drink coffee, thought about the things that possibly could be the cause but SHE insisted to leave the laxatives off. Anyone else have this?
You are right about people doubting the diagnosis
I went finally to a pain clinic where when I told the physician what another physician diagnosed, the pain clinic doctor threw his eyes up to the ceiling as if to say he did not believe. I tell you what I take for symptoms like you describe (ran out this past week and I could tell the difference in a couple of days), that is over the counter glucosamine chondroitin- cheap, can get at Walmart. I too have the creaky joints, knees popping, so I know it helps those. As far as the neck pain, etc. it might be fibro- I am having thoracic injections done pretty soon- had some others done at pain clinic- if you can self-refer or get referred to pain clinic - that probably would be best because lots of others give you the runaround, don’t believe and don’t even think it a true malady. I would wish them the same except I do not wish this much pain on my worst enemy.
If you're challenging to diagnosis...
You'll need to have an independent evaluation done by a doc willing to submit the proper paperwork and possibly attend the hearing. I wouldn't bother with it if the plan is agreeable, though.
mystery. Chocolate or vanilla?

PS Everyone intesterested in mystery shopping. I never come sm
to this board, in fact this is my first time in months, so just know that if you have anymore questions after the one I answered below this it probably won't get answered and it's not okay to email me about this because the only email I have is used for work. Sorry!

Endocring diagnosis - (___) toxicosis?
The doc says "Endocrine Diagnosis -- s/l grey phara toxicosis ???? Have no clue
Did you have contact with your friend after her diagnosis?

I ask because if she was your friend and you knew she had pancreatic cancer, why wouldn't you know her husband left her?  I would imagine if a friend of mine was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, I would visit her and call her up until she passed.  I would probably know if her husband left her.

Just curious.

How about the mystery asteroid illness in Peru?

but I do believe fibro can be a catchall diagnosis when docs can't (sm)

Why would you give organs to others if you had the diagnosis of meningitis?
I find this terribly strange- personally I would never have wanted them donated out- meningitis can be a killer itself.
Adam Walsh mystery solved
The guy who did it confessed on his death bed. It was the guy John Walsh always thought did it. I'm glad they will finally get some peace now cause 26 years is a long time to wait.
Check into mystery shops. I have recently sm
signed up for some. There are legit ones out there. Although the pay isn't always great, every little bit can add up. Just NEVER pay a fee to sign up, those are not legit. The legit ones are free to sign up. Like I recently signed up to inspect Exxon gas stations. The pay is only $4 but it only takes maybe 5 mins max. You have to purchase at least $1 in fuel and up to $1 instore product, which both are reimbursed, and then the $4 pay. I found 15+ stores in the same location, etc. So basically I have myself assigned to do 40 stores, 20 each day x2 days. My profit will be $160 and although I am out money for gas and the purchases those will be reimbursed so I really will clear $160 in two days as I will be getting my gas to do the shops reimbursed.

Also, Wal-mart/Sam's hires door greeters and those food sample people who cook and demonstrate with free samples. A lot of those folks are close to your husband's age.
You didn't ask for a diagnosis. You asked for a prognosis. nm

We play bingo and give out mystery gifts to the winner. Very simple..
Every person who attends the party, bring 1 gift..they are all put under a little table tree and when someone wins a round of bingo, they select gift from under the tree. It can be a lot of fun if you get fun qwirky gifts. We all have a laugh at some of the gifts.

Why did you get a dog when you cannot pay for health care

Health insurance, so not sure.
My copay is the normal amount though, so it may not be too expensive. Our more expensive drugs will have a higher copay. You might see if your doctor has samples, just to see if it will work for you.

This is w/o health insurance either - sm
though ours is cheap (but very, very good). We only pay $140 a month for 4 of us. Of course just about every few months (if not every) something unexpected crops up too, car repair, etc.

health food :)
i've made this exact same recipe for years -- husband calls it "health food" cuz of the oats. (i just call em no-bakes). I boil mine gently however for 2 minutes, not a second more for soft cookie consistency.

The only thing i do different now is use the DARK Hershey's cocoa -- everyone loves them!!
Health Insurance
I pay $240 a month for mom's (49yo) health insurance. This is for medical insurance plus a dental & vision discount program. She doesn't go to the doctor alot but when she does go there is always a remaining balance anywhere from $40-$80. Hospitalization through the insurance is set at $5,000 deductible.  I am just wondering does this sound reasonable or is there anything else cheaper with good coverage or same coverage????  I checked into BCBS but they are SO expensive.  Any input on this is greatly appreciated.
How's hubby's health?

Has he had a physical or been to the doctor recently?  Repeating stories like that and an attitude change such as what you  are describing can sometimes mean the onset of Alzheimer's or another form of dementia.  I don't want to be a debbie downer, but I think it's something that probably should be looked into.

Good luck.

Would you cancel health ins....sm
if you couldn't really afford it?  Or would you scrape by to pay for it?  I have contemplated canceling to get ahead on my bills for a while.  What if I or my husband or son gets really sick, say our gallbladder or appendix?  What would they do?  Let us suffer?  Will they treat you and let you make payments?  I am afraid to let it go because I am scared we may really need it.  I don't know what to do.
New Health Tonic??!

I found this very well-referenced, scientific article to be quite amazing and enlightening indeed:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seminophagia -- Knowing these things, some people holding old taboos, attitudes or inhibitions may need to  reconsider them!

She qualifies for an IEP under "other health SM

impaired" due to her ADD.  You need to make a request in writing for them to perform official testing and to set up an IEP to ensure that your daughter gets the best help available.  (Preferential seating--in front of class near teacher, extra time on written assignments, less homework if necessary--i.e., 2 math problems versus 10, non-verbal reminders that your daughter will understand to mean "pay attention, sweety, it's time to do our classwork," etc., etc.)  Also, if she is behind academically, they should offer her extra help in that area--although in my experience they may not offer it to someone so young because they learn so quickly at that age and she may be caught up before you know it.

Good luck to you and your daughter!

Requiring a woman to do anything with her health
just treads on nasty ground in my opinion.  Where would it end?  I think this would be a heck of a step backwards for us all.

Does anyone know about Swanson Health Products?
I received a catalog of their products today (herbs, vitamins, minerals, etc.) and their prices seem really good.  I was wondering how good their product is.  Do they put a lot of "extra" ingredients in their herbs or do they offer the "real" thing?  I know that there are some companies out there that their herb/vitamin supplements are not worth taking because there is so little of the real thing in their capsules.  How do you rate Swanson?
Health care is important, but..

Ex-spouse on health insurance?

My daughter just told me about a proposal her ex has suggested.  He is close to a thousand dollars in arrears for back child support.  Now he wants to negotiate a deal where my daughter will accept about half of what he owes in exchange for his adding her to his job health insurance.  She is self-employed and has not had health insurance coverage since their divorce.

I don't think he can do that, can he?  Since he has lied about so many things I don't think she will do that unless he can prove she can be covered.  Even if he could add her, what would keep him from dropping her for spite if there are problems down the road?  Any thoughts?  Thank you.
