very easy at classmates.com, except for their ads (ignore them) - find the state, the school, the year you're interested in, then scroll away for the people's names. Most marrieds put up their maiden names at classmates.com.

I wouldn't register.
home. Housewarming is more like a gathering. Some people may bring something and some might not. I did a combo housewarming/holiday time (beginning of December) open house. Most brought bottle of wine, holiday decoration, etc. Some did not bring anything at all. It sure was fun though. Have a great time.
Wow, our 3-year-old car was only $145 to register here.
I thought that was bad!
Register on the DO NOT CALL registry
Google do not call registry and put your phone number in. I even put in my cell phone number. It does not cost anything and if they still call you, tell them you are on the do not call list and will turn them in. The house will get a lot quieter.
Misha - I clicked on it but one has to register

Trying to find classmates. Has anyone tried. .. sm
finding classmates through the advertised sites like Find a Classmate or Reunion.com, etc? I figure these are only successful if someone has registered on the site and doubt many of these classmates have registered. I don't know married names on lots of these people and don't know what state they now live in so I need one that tracks down from maiden name, school, home town, year of birth, etc. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Finding classmates
I have been successful at finding classmates by putting up a myspace profile at myspace.com. This is free and there are more of us (from the 70s) on their than you might think. It is primarily a social internet space for younger people, but I have located and reunited with several former classmates - it's great. There is also a section for high schools - so we are able to post about the good ole' days. It's fun being able to see pictures of old friends now, as well as their children and grandchildren. The best part is that there are no fees involved.
Was it rude of my bride friend to register for...
My friend just got married. When I went to the store and requested a copy of the bridal registry, I found several $200-$600 items on the registry. I was shocked.
I do not know if it is proper or not, but I have always been told you "pay for your meal" in the gift you bring, so I always assume at least $75 to $100 for a sit down meal. But, she and her fiancé are both middle class at best, so I was not initially expecting a big wedding.
When I saw so many $200 to $600 on the registry, I concluded, incorrectly, that they had decided to throw a big bash. I bought my gift very late and the registry still did not show that ANY items over $150 had sold. I spent $150 on my gift, which was more than it looked like anyone else was paying, but if you wait until the last minute, your options at the low end are very limited! That is my own fault!
They actually served a very low budget buffet, prepared by neighbors and friends, for the meal. It was actually a lower budget wedding than I expected. I am not criticizing their decision to save money on the wedding. I think lots of people spend way too much money on weddings. BUT, I do think it was rather presumptuous of her to register for such pricey items when most of her friends and family cannot afford them and when she was not throwing a fancy wedding.
I am not complaining about spending $150 and not getting "my money's worth" from the meal...that is NOT my point at all. BUT, I do think if you are going to put items like that on your bridal registry you need to consider who your friends are and whether or not your circles can afford such items. I am in a financial position where I could decide to buy a $150 item, but not all of her friends could even go that high and there was very little below $100 to choose from even if they were the first ones to shop.
Is it really typical for middle class people to request such high ticket items for wedding gifts these days? Or was it actually as presumptuous as I perceive it to be?
I got one of those! But it was from a classmates friend supposedly....
and when I tried to open the link my computer froze up, thank goodness, I guess? Or could I still be in for trouble? Don't they need more information from you, passwords and such?
Classmates.com is hugely successful. I graduated with over 900 sm
and right now we are only missing about 100 people. So, give it a try! Good luck!
Famous highschool or college classmates?
Anybody go to high school or college with someone that now is famous? My husband graduated high school with Dennis Basso. He is a designer who is on QVC a lot. I want my husband to call QVC everytime he is on to chat with him for laughs but he refuses. He says he was a loner in school, Dennis, I mean. Now look at him. Bringing home the big $$$$$
Son's teacher tells his classmates he has ADHD...
My 12yo has ADHD diagnosed since he was 5. He is now in the 6th grade and is having an extremely difficult time with his peers. He is being picked on terribly, excluded from groups, bullied and harassed, always when the teacher is out of sight or has her back turned. She knows it is happening but doesn't always see it because they're sneaky. Last Friday was a worse than usual day for my son and the teacher actually witnessed some of the students being rude and mean to him. My son left the room to use the bathroom and while he was away the teacher announced to the whole class that he has ADHD and to stop picking on him. I know this is a fact because I asked several of the kids and they confirmed it. The teacher called me at home tonight to explain what happened and why she said it. She said she was so angry at the kids for the way they were treating my son and in a state of anger (the kind when you can't even think of words to express your emotions) she told them he had ADHD and his annoyances and behaviors are sometimes out of his control so stop picking on him. She basically read them the riot act. I realize she was trying to help and defend my son but even she admits maybe she made things worse. My son told me today that somebody called him "sped" for special education. I hurt so much for what he is going through and don't know what to do. Isn't ADHD protected under privacy and confidentiality laws? Did she violate my son't privacy or am I making a big deal out of it. I am having a meeting with the teacher on Wednesday and need some advice on what to do next.

college costs
DD just got accepted to the Pratt Institute, an art and design college in NY. Cost for first year including room, board, fees, books, etc., $48,000. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Seems like a lot money to learn how to paint and make collages.
There's more to college costs than just
the tuition. Parents have a responsibility to their children to see to it that they are educated in a manner that prepares them for a career, not flipping burgers. I know that that wasn't always the norm and that college was a privilege, but now it is a necessity. You can't make it in the world without some kind of degree and not helping your children with their education is selfish.
That's not to say that the child shouldn't bear some responsibility in this. He/she can certainly get a part-time job to help with books, living expenses, etc. I see nothing wrong with the child taking out the standard student loan either, but dumping them out the door at 18 with nothing more than a high school education is not being a responsible parent. Perhaps that's the problem today. So many parents don't have time or are too selfish worrying about themselves to make sure their children are set. It's not about money, it's about responsibility.
Judging by your responses, I'd say your husband's divorce was quite bitter and perhaps the animosity you feel should be directed toward his ex-wife and not the children. They obviously had no control over that money that was given to their mother. While my children aren't ready for college yet, one thing I have learned already is that you never stop being a parent.
Why it costs 400 bucks
They make custom trays for you, which last pretty much forever or until your teeth move significantly, whichever comes first. Then you just buy the tubes of bleaching gel, which is not that expensive. The custom trays are wonderful. They are held on tightly by the gel. My dentist charged $300 and the gel was $35 a box, which is 4 tubes, which is a LOT of gel.
I would not have the trays made right away if she has just gotten her braces off, as from what I hear her teeth are likely to shift somewhat.
This medicine is not OTC, rather it costs
1300.00 per month! Can you believe that? It is for HIV so it is something she really needs to get. My pharmacist told me Medicaid might be able to pick up what her insurance co does not pay (they will pay 400) so actually the cost per month is a whopping 1700. My pharmacist also told her to push hard while speaking with her own ins place that they should cover the cost. Maybe she just was not forceful enough. Bottom line, I was just seeing if others faced similar situation.
costs $30-$40,000 per year to house each
The jails are overflowing here.....and it costs anywhere from $30-$40,000 annually to house EACH individual inmate...that the taxpayers pay for....
something to think about.....
House costs here are not that fricking high
We bought a new home, 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, stucco, lovely wooded area behind us for about 220,000 about 3 years ago. It is a wonderful neighborhood with tennis courts, 3 swimming pools and loverly! I know the prices of homes in California really high and watch HGTV and I, for the life of me, cannot see what is figured into those prices because what you get is certainly not what we got for a third of the prices there. Husband believes in paying the monthlys in advance so our mortgage is coming down really fast. We are still able, thank goodness, to enjoy all the extras such as dinners out, theater and the like. It is really sad to be in a place where the housing market is so far above what it should be that people are unable to have decent housing.
Sounds like a scam. Crap like that costs the rest of us
Ridiculous.
Visited Asheville, NC and loved it. Seattle costs $, but
xx
I've noticed the rising costs of groceries lately
I believe the cost is partly to blame for the obesity in this nation. It is so much more expensive to try to eat healthier. I can make pizza for my husband and 3 kids for under $10. Yet, when we have chicken, potatoes, a vegetable and bread -- it's closer to $20. Of course when I serve the "full course" meal, my kids expect dessert, too. Is there no end?
I actually found myself stocking up last week on eggs because they were on sale and I knew I'd be making deviled eggs for T-day. I bought 6 dozen eggs. I have never bought that many eggs at once before in my life. But I saved 75 cents a dozen.
crazy stuff! Who buys this? My mascara costs $ 4.-- to $ 8.--.nm
nm
I have been making my own laundry soap. It only costs me about $10 for a 6-month supply. nm
xx
Is that over the counter. I checked on Zovirax ointment and it costs $180 for a teeny tube. That
is crazy and the insurance wont pay a penny.
