Candles (try Sugar Shack) s/m

They're out of Edgar, NE.  I fell in love with a Plumeria one when visiting a sister up there.  Started ordering them, then got a tax ID #, attempted to sell them, but never made any $ on them.  The votives are pretty good, but with the regular candles, they're in glass jars, which keep the fragrance really well.  You may want to check out their w/s.  Not sure how far you are from NE.  Obviously I am, being in TX.

The Shack
My husband and I have both read The Shack. It is a WONDERFUL book! And yes, I agree, it is lifechanging. Have you finished it? I'd like to hear your thoughts.
The Shack

I'm halfway through it now and am loving it, although parts of it have been painful to read.  I bought copies for myself and 6 friends after my pastor suggested our Sunday School class read it and discuss it.

My 12-year-old daughter devoured it last weekend right after I bought it and loved it.  I'm looking forward to hearing others' opinions.  An eye surgeon I took a friend to saw it when I was reading it in the waiting room and said he had just finished it and was still thinking about what he thought of it, wondered my opinion.

I find it keeps my attention and so far, that's enough to keep me going with it.  I don't usually read scary or sad books.  I don't watch horror movies.

I find all the controversy interesting.  I, too, have noticed that people seem to either really love it or really dislike it, not so much in between on this one.

Have you tried Radio Shack?

"The Shack"...sm
Has anyone read this book "The Shack?"  I have heard rave reviews on this book.  It is said to be lifechanging.  I bought this and am on the 3rd chapter.
Has anyone here read The Shack???
I just finished reading this and all I can say is WOW.  I would love to hear from others that have read it.  After reading it I just wanted to go out and buy copies for all my relatives and friends.  Normally I would gladly give my book to whoever wanted to read it but I could never part with this book!
candles

Can't help it but I'm an ebay freak.

This is actually a good deal on pinecone candles if you could get it.   270115615311 . 7 candles in total and these look like the ones I have.  I bought several packs on sale 3 years ago in Michigan and have not seen them around here.  I live in Santa Claus, we set out luminaries every year in the paper sacks on christmas eve and this past year it rained so I picked up all the candles and have been making my own.  Need to by me a pinecone mold!  Another idea would be to buy some wax and add oil and possibly some glitter and dip your own pine cones.  I have seen these at festivals and then arrange in a basket.  You can also check crateandbarrell.com they have some white ones.  I have see several napkin holders made of berries and pinecones, target sells those still or you could make your own.  Mine are dark brown with a gold (probaby rub-n-buff that can be bought in craft section) applied to the tips of the petals.  I was in Waynesboro a couple months ago..should have picked up those cones!  Gosh now I'm in the christmas spirit!

Candles

I almost always have a Yankee candle going while I work.  They have the best scents IMO hands down, and I've tried many others.  So many good ones . . .  if you like herbs try Lavender-Sage.  It's wonderful.  Mistletoe is another nice one for this time of year.  I like fruity in summer and the "sugary vanilla" ones for now - buttercream, Christmas cookie, I could go on and on . . .

Candles - sm

Yankee candles are so good but I think too expensive. Does anyone have a source for another brand of a good candle, mostly votives?

Making candles

I had heard that you can save up the scrap wax from candles in glass jars, melt all of them down and put them back in the containers, adding a wick and scent such as cinnamon.  So, I've been saving my containers with the bits of leftover candles.  Anyone know how one goes about doing this?  Is it possible to do this?

THANKS!

who's lighting the candles?
I too had a small wedding and my matron of honor's son who was 12 at the time went up and lit all of the candles.

You don't have to have them involved. You should not be guilted into creating spots. Just tell them that you wanted them to "enjoy" your day.
Yankee candles

I spent 22 bucks on an Autumn Wreath Houswarmer Yankee candle the other day...and for that price I expected knock-me-down scent for days.  Well I lit it and put it in my upstairs bathroom and it spelled pretty good.  Then the next day when i lit it I noticed it didn't seem quite as strong.  Well today I lit it and i can barely smell it though it's been lit for hours.  I have kept the lid on it when not in use.  What a waste of  money!

I used to buy my candles from an online candle company called Two Blue Candle Co but she went out of busiess and obviously Yankee isn't doing it for me.  Anybody got any suggestions on how to get my candle "stink" fix?

yankee candles
I love my Yankee candles! I'm really shocked you don't smell yours. I buy them regularly. Do you keep your wick trimmed? Every once in a while, when the candle is hot, I may have to scrape the sides of the glass so it it all melts but I can't complain. Also, when the wick totaly burns out and there is still a bit in the bottom, I set the glass in my burner and it still smells good! Maybe you should take it back and see if they will let you exchange it???
I have many scented candles
that I got as gifts. I always say I am going to use them (my son does not believe me). I think it would be nice while taking a bath...but maybe I should do it while I am working or I will never get the chance...because I am always working! I have two Yankee candles. I am sure they would smell wonderful.
I really like Circle E candles
Cheap candles are a waste of money IMO. What's the point of buying them if you can't smell them?
LOL I just bought some candles SM
at the dollar store - I actually prefer them. I think because they are such cheap candles that the scent is not as strong as the nicer ones, but for me it is perfect - just enough to smell nice without being overpowering. I was just thinking I could buy 325 candles for the price of 1 of those Jo Malone candles. LOL
Febreze candles
I bought one of the seasonal Febreze candles and was very dissapointed! THe candle smelled so good in the box.  I had 2 of them lit in a 1200 sq foot home and could smell NEITHER ONE.  I guess i will stick with Yankee Candles !!!
We used to use the wax milk cartons for candles sm
when I was a kid. We used to put some ice in the carton and then add the wax. It always made different looking candles. Also, if you have an old electric mixer, you can make the wax foamy while it is still liquid and look like suds or piles of snow.
No unburned candles in my home - all lit at least once

I don't burn candles from Yankee, but
I use those wax tarts in a tart warmer, and I found that the ones from Yankee smell the longest. They give off more of a smell in your house than candles do. Plus you can get an electric warmer, so you don't have to worry about the flame if you have animals or such, as I do. Works much better for me, just a suggestion.
The best candles I have EVER smelled in my life -
Come from Old Virginia Candle Company. I have bought lots of their candles over the years. However, since QVC began carrying their line their shipping practices have really gotten sloppy if you actually purchase from the company itself. I received a badly broken candle (the kind poured in glass), which took them a month to replace. I was never able to speak with an actual person at that company when they found out I was not a vendor, just a personal user of their products. Everything was done via e-mail. Their products, however, really have a nice fragrance that you CAN smell, lit or unlit. Give them a try. :-)
Yankee candles update

I was actually able to take the used candle back to the store and exchange it.  I ended up getting a biscotti Wood Wick (Virginia Candle Co) candle that smells wunnnderful..i haven't lit it yet...but I did get a few of the Yankee tarts... Right now I have the fresh cut roses one melting and it smells pretty good!

Somebody also told me Circle E candles are great...anybody tried them?

Thanks for all of your suggestions

I burn Yankee Candles
Right now I have one going in my office that is called "beach towel" and it smells like the beach on a hot summer day! (I'm in denial because I live in New England and it's cold here now!) In my living room, I am burning one called "chocolate chip cookie" and it smells like just someone is baking cookies! I love it! I go to Yankee Candle about twice a month and stock up! I just got about 5 of their new Christmas candles that I can't wait to burn.
I just went there today and bought candles!
Love them! I always buy candles there! I am burning gingerbread right now :)
Yes - I've made hundreds of candles
and have used tons of scrap wax - not from glass jars but believe that could be done. My recommendation for doing this:  Use double boiler - pot of water, large coffee can filled with water and your candle jar clothes-pinned to side of coffee can or other large can.... water in inner can will eventually melt jar wax and then you will need to very carefully pour jarred wax to another container.  Be sure the inner coffee can filled with water has enough water in it to come up to the level of at least half of jar candle - does that make sense?  Jarred candle needs to sit down inside water to melt....  You can do just the jar inside a pot of water on the stove but the inner can just gives you another layer for safety... good luck!
I use the Yankee tarts and they are much stronger than the candles.....
I felt as you did about the candles and figured what's the point? The tarts must have a higher oil content in them because it is a HUGE difference. Sometimes it is too strong, lol. I also like that you can reuse them a couple of times, I will even take the hardened wax out of the warmer and store them if I want to change the scent right away. Do try them, you will be pleased.

Oh and you have to try these two - Mandarin/Cranberry and Macintosh/Peach..unbelievablygood smelling!

Come back and let us know what you think.
You will never waste your money on Yankee candles again after trying these!
:-)
Love the Wood Wick candles...sm
sounds like a crackling fire...and they are strongly scented - excellent quality. I also like the Swan Creek Candles. They are highly scented and have some delicious scents. My favorite is Buttercream Vanilla and they have crumbs on top of the candle that melts...wondeful...

Never heard of Circle E candles but try Swan Creek if you see them!

New favorite Yankee Candles scent

I ordered a box of new spring scents (tarts) and I have to say Velvet Petals is my new all time favorite, with Midnight Jasmine running a close second.

What's your favorite?

Sugar free
My husband is diabetic and my oldest son is hyperactive. We use splenda. For Kool-aid we just buy the old fasioned with no sugar and add the splenda. I actually use is everyday. It works in everything except for brownies and fudge and things like that.

We are actually making pecan pie, pumpkin pie, choco-cake and even cranberry sauce for thanksgiving with it. Give it a try we did and it is the only "sugar" in our house now.

Good Luck
No sugar, low fat desserts
My very best friend just found out she has sugar. She is on a low sugar, low fat (carb?) diet. Well, she is coming over tomorrow night and I don't have a clue what to offer. I usually bake something (brownies, omg), so need some help, PLEASE! and thank you...
Sugar Substitutes
Splenda is not a good *sugar free* substitute either. You have to read the packaging. It uses High Frutose Corn Syrup *HFCS*, which is sugar, and an additive that addicts you to eating more with cravings. I have done alot of research on this subject, as I want to live a healthy life without government/pharmaceutical intervention. I care about what I eat and you would be AMAZED at how much the upper eschelon is not telling the american public about what is being added to our food. I have learned that Xylitol is the only safe sugar substitute that does not include high fructose corn syrup. try to keep in mind the great cigarette coverup concerning nicotine and other additives to keep people addicted to and buying their products. the same is true with our food, hence obesity/diabetes/other illnesses attributable to food additives such as hormones and growth stimulators. be aware. try going sugar free if you can - sm

no sugar made me feel 20 years younger.  sounds strange but it is true.

if you are presently on sugar, it will be hard for a few days, but really worth it.  i personally cannot do a gradual weaning off sugar but need to go cold turkey.  same with white foods - white bread, white flour, white crackers, white whatever.  i eat protein, protein, protein when getting off sugar.  fish, skinless boneless chicken, every 1/2 hour if you are hungry. after a day or two, you will not want sugar or white foods.  you will be satisfied with lean protein - the less beef the better - and vegetables.  and no milk or milk products.  sounds strange, i know, but i would be willing to bet my next paycheck that you would feel 150% better.  eat like that for awhile and then start adding back in the foods you cut out.  one at a time.  gradually.  maybe one food every 2 weeks.  and notice how you feel.  your body will tell you what it does not like.  yogurt was the first food i added back in and right away my nose started running, clear drainage, knew that i could not handle yogurt.

that is just what i have done and what works for me.  not medical advice at all.  just my experience.

RE sugar in diet

When my mother was dx as being diabetic, I started using sweetener substitutes, thinking that would be better than real sugar.  Dr. Gott, a physician who responds to letters much like Dear Abby in our local newspaper, had a patient write in that when she went on vacation and no longer used the sweeteners during that time, her leg pain went away. When she got back from vacation and started drinking her diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, her pain came back.  She was able to determine that she has an "allergy" to the stuff.  I only drank one diet soda a day and one cup of tea with artificial sweetener a day, but I thought I'd try this with my leg pain/issues.  Hard to believe, but it's made a world of difference.  I've been 3 weeks without the stuff and can't believe the difference.

Dr. Gott is a supporter of the no flour, no sugar diet. If it contains flour or sugar, to not eat it.  A lot of people have wrote to him with success with being on the diet. I did it for a while, did great, but like all diets I didn't make it a lifelong commitment.

Oh that's right! Carrots have sugar don't they? sm
Peas do too, another of my favorites right along with the oranges, bananas and grapes I have in the fridge. Sigh. Guess I had better get a book on low sugar cooking since I will be taking high doses of corticosteroids again real soon. That will certainly send my glucose into orbit.
Sugar Cookies

Is anyone out there a good baker?  Looking for a good recipe for the B I G sugar cookies, not those small ones you can buy, slice and bake at the store.   I think some also call them sour cream cookies . . . not sure.  They are about 3 inches round and maybe 1/2 inch high.  You can top them with icing or sprinkles or colored sugars.  Thanks in advance.
