re: Ants
What about those ant traps? Your cats can't get into them and they seem to work sometimes...don't know...just a thought...I usually vacuum them up and then spray...
Some ants come in for water as much
or more than food. I have heard they don't like to walk thru talcum powder. You can put a circle of it around pet water bowls if that is the draw for them. See if you can find where they are coming in, both the inside entry point and the outside. Plug holes with silicone caulk or expanding caulk like STUFF. A natural product is diamateous earth (not the kind used for pools, though). Use only outside, or it may be okay in crawlspace, but not sure. You don't want to breathe it, so wear a mask while pouring. Once it is down it harmless to people and pets, but when hard-bodied insects walk through it, the texture tears their exoskeletons up and kills them. But it is washed away by rain, so very expensive. Depends on how rainy your climate is as to whether it will work for you.
they may be carpenter ants and you need
professional help or at least heavy duty stuff - they actually eat wood.  Better search internet and identify.  If they are run of the mill ants I think boric acid in a line will keep them from crossing.
We have the same trouble with ants in the summer.
around the areas you think they are coming in.  The only thing is if you have a small child, this may pose a risk of them getting into if you place it low enough.  You could also try sprinkling it outside around your home.
I grew up with fire ants and believe me sm
You KNOW when you've been bitten. They aren't called fire ants for nothing. We do think it might be insect(s) from the tree we bought (see post "something occurred to us").
I just got ants in the pants I guess.

I'm not a Gemini...love-child Capricorn and I swear mom smoked pot ;-)

I do have all the variety I could want though...acute care, clinic notes, ESL, emergency room, even radiology.  I even asked about cross-training on eEscription but I guess everyone is too busy right now at this time of year to get me started on that.  I even put myself on an on-call rotation to really spice things up and bring in a little extra moola.  It's just that no matter what job I've ever had, I get bored with it once I master it...doesn't matter if it's typing, flower arranging, running a stable, playing medical secretary, or even medical assistant.  It all comes back to the redundancy of anything driving me nuts!

Oh well.  I do feel better now that I screamed.  I think it must me almost time for me to surf the crimson tide or something.  I almost opened up a can of chocolate frosting to snack on...and that just ain't right.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and just listening to me babble.  It's usually only my critters that get to hear that.

my dad had carpenter ants at his home...sm

To discern if they are carpenter ants - look for a sizeable dark/black ball attached to them.......that would tell you they are carpenter ants and the other poster is correct - THEY EAT WOOD in the foundations of buildings/houses, et cetera, and would need professional extermination.  Other poster is correct on regular ants and boric acid.

Help!!! Itty Bitty Ants from Hades EVERYWHERE

Does anyone know a nontoxic way to kill these demonic creatures???  They have invaded my office, and I haven't a clue what to do about it.  We sprayed outside where they were coming in...didn't stop em.  I tried spraying vinegar water on em (slowed em down).  I have been thinking about perfuming them to death with Bath and Body Works room spray but that stuff is nasty (in the scent I currently have on hand).  I have three cats and I don't like spraying toxic stuff inside the house, but I am about at the end of my rope.  Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

HC

Grant's Kills Ants has worked for me. (sm)
They take the bait back to the queen and it kills her, and then the entire colony.

We just sprayed the perimeter of our house with Ortho Home Defense Max and it killed literally thousands at the site where they were getting into the house (they came out and died near the site - yuck!). So far, so good! It says you can spray it inside too, but I'm like you...I don't like to spray that stuff indoors.

Good luck!
It's an oldie - 'THEM' - about giant ants.
I still think of them every time I drive past that part of the L.A. River near Griffith Park, and see those cave-like tunnels along the side......
problem with ants on my kitchen table
I want to thank whoever recommended Terro.  Somebody that my daughter works with gave her some; it is the best.  We have tried everything else and I do mean everything else from fogging the house, to raid to wiping down the table completely, so again I want to thank you.  All of the ants love it, which is great.
Grant's Kills Ants is the only thing that has worked for me.
Don't know if it depends on the type of ant, but I tried everything and then tried Grant's Kills Ants ant stakes and they worked! Good luck! I hate ants!
Sugar free
My husband is diabetic and my oldest son is hyperactive. We use splenda. For Kool-aid we just buy the old fasioned with no sugar and add the splenda. I actually use is everyday. It works in everything except for brownies and fudge and things like that.

We are actually making pecan pie, pumpkin pie, choco-cake and even cranberry sauce for thanksgiving with it. Give it a try we did and it is the only "sugar" in our house now.

Good Luck
No sugar, low fat desserts
My very best friend just found out she has sugar. She is on a low sugar, low fat (carb?) diet. Well, she is coming over tomorrow night and I don't have a clue what to offer. I usually bake something (brownies, omg), so need some help, PLEASE! and thank you...
Sugar Substitutes
Splenda is not a good *sugar free* substitute either. You have to read the packaging. It uses High Frutose Corn Syrup *HFCS*, which is sugar, and an additive that addicts you to eating more with cravings. I have done alot of research on this subject, as I want to live a healthy life without government/pharmaceutical intervention. I care about what I eat and you would be AMAZED at how much the upper eschelon is not telling the american public about what is being added to our food. I have learned that Xylitol is the only safe sugar substitute that does not include high fructose corn syrup. try to keep in mind the great cigarette coverup concerning nicotine and other additives to keep people addicted to and buying their products. the same is true with our food, hence obesity/diabetes/other illnesses attributable to food additives such as hormones and growth stimulators. be aware. JMO.
try going sugar free if you can - sm

no sugar made me feel 20 years younger.  sounds strange but it is true.

if you are presently on sugar, it will be hard for a few days, but really worth it.  i personally cannot do a gradual weaning off sugar but need to go cold turkey.  same with white foods - white bread, white flour, white crackers, white whatever.  i eat protein, protein, protein when getting off sugar.  fish, skinless boneless chicken, every 1/2 hour if you are hungry. after a day or two, you will not want sugar or white foods.  you will be satisfied with lean protein - the less beef the better - and vegetables.  and no milk or milk products.  sounds strange, i know, but i would be willing to bet my next paycheck that you would feel 150% better.  eat like that for awhile and then start adding back in the foods you cut out.  one at a time.  gradually.  maybe one food every 2 weeks.  and notice how you feel.  your body will tell you what it does not like.  yogurt was the first food i added back in and right away my nose started running, clear drainage, knew that i could not handle yogurt.

that is just what i have done and what works for me.  not medical advice at all.  just my experience.

RE sugar in diet

When my mother was dx as being diabetic, I started using sweetener substitutes, thinking that would be better than real sugar.  Dr. Gott, a physician who responds to letters much like Dear Abby in our local newspaper, had a patient write in that when she went on vacation and no longer used the sweeteners during that time, her leg pain went away. When she got back from vacation and started drinking her diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, her pain came back.  She was able to determine that she has an "allergy" to the stuff.  I only drank one diet soda a day and one cup of tea with artificial sweetener a day, but I thought I'd try this with my leg pain/issues.  Hard to believe, but it's made a world of difference.  I've been 3 weeks without the stuff and can't believe the difference.

Dr. Gott is a supporter of the no flour, no sugar diet. If it contains flour or sugar, to not eat it.  A lot of people have wrote to him with success with being on the diet. I did it for a while, did great, but like all diets I didn't make it a lifelong commitment.

Oh that's right! Carrots have sugar don't they? sm
Peas do too, another of my favorites right along with the oranges, bananas and grapes I have in the fridge. Sigh. Guess I had better get a book on low sugar cooking since I will be taking high doses of corticosteroids again real soon. That will certainly send my glucose into orbit.
Sugar Cookies

Is anyone out there a good baker?  Looking for a good recipe for the B I G sugar cookies, not those small ones you can buy, slice and bake at the store.   I think some also call them sour cream cookies . . . not sure.  They are about 3 inches round and maybe 1/2 inch high.  You can top them with icing or sprinkles or colored sugars.  Thanks in advance.

to the point that my nose would actually touch the keyboard!! While funny, it was also a symptom.  I had undiagnosed diabetes and would just "poop" out when my blood sugar was too low (or even too high!).  According to my doctor there's more undiagnosed diabetes out there than you'd believe!

Candles (try Sugar Shack) s/m
They're out of Edgar, NE.  I fell in love with a Plumeria one when visiting a sister up there.  Started ordering them, then got a tax ID #, attempted to sell them, but never made any $ on them.  The votives are pretty good, but with the regular candles, they're in glass jars, which keep the fragrance really well.  You may want to check out their w/s.  Not sure how far you are from NE.  Obviously I am, being in TX.
I will LMAO when you end up sad and alone--no sugar daddy. nm

What do you call a single person intentionally taking fertility drugs when having 6 kids already? As far as the reduction thing, that had been brought up by the physicians when this person was pregnant- I was not the first to think of that and it is done all the time with multiple pregnancies. Check it out on google.
Have you ever had your blood sugar suddenly

I was just wondering, because I think that's what happened to me today just as I was finishing up with getting a little exercise this afternoon.  Usually a piece of meat or cheese and I'm completely normal again, but this time it's much slower to go away.   Just as I was about to call it a day anyway, I suddenly got very weak-feeling and slightly nauseous, & a little light-headed.  Sat down until it passed, then skipped going to the market afterward, like I'd planned, and came home.  While driving home I was sweating so much that in about 10 minutes I was soaked.  I came inside, had some cheese and some slices of chicken, then lay down, using a big bath towel as a blanket since that's what was handy.  Soon that was soaked, too.  Felt better about 30 minutes later, took a hot shower and had some dinner.  Now I'm almost back at baseline.  I've had similar spells very occasionally in the past, but they always cleared up within minutes of having either some protein or a banana.   Does that sound like a hypoglycemic episode to you?  I'm not diabetic, in fairly good shape, not overweight, and do tend to eat a lot of sweets.

This little smiley shows how quickly it comes on, and how it feels!

Sugar Mama joke?
I am just about 4 months single now and recently started dating a guy - was looking for someone with a good heart, compassionate, etc.  He seems to fit that bill.  He has some financial worries but money is not something I am looking for. I work very hard and get some money from my ex husband, child support, etc.  I paid a couple of times when we went out because I have no problem with that if it is my idea to go somewhere and he says up front he doesn't have the money to go.  But today he called and I said I had to work because in my profession if I'm not working, I'm not making money, and he said, "yeah, I can't have a sugar mama who is not making any money so you better get back to work."  I said in a mad voice, "You can't have a sugar mama either way!!!"  He laughed and we hung up.  A few min later he called back and I didn't answer, and he left a message saying he hoped I knew he was joking.  But I am a single mother and to me that type of joke has a grain of truth to it. I feel like a mama bear - I am furious.  I have accepted his health issues, his ED issues, etc., but I am just plain furious about that joke.  Do you think I am making to much of it or do you think my instincts are correct?
Question about sugar free products

I love sugar free stuff (soda, kool-aid, etc), but i've heard that phenylkeroturic (not sure if i spelled it right) wasn't good for you.  have any of you heard this or know of a place to find out more info?  i'm going to try google.  my kids like the sugar free kool-aid and i don't want to give it to them if it's not good.

thanks

Hmmm, less sugar helps your pain? sm
Geesh, I'll have to try cutting back. Since the holidays when I way overdid the whole sweets issue, I find my pain has increased signficantly, but I assumed it was due to all the painting I have been doing in addition to all the stress. I take Relafen 200 4 tabs daily and have Darvocet for the more severe pain, but I only use that at night, unless of course I have a nasty daytime headache, then I take one. I only take 1 day ususally. Would like to be able to cut back on both but it hasn't been possible.

anything, which is why I like him so much. If you are in debt and drowning it's usually your own fault by overspending, buying too much house, trying to keep up appearances. While I do understand when there are medical bills, etc, causing debt, when you have a couple of car payments, a huge mortgage, a boat payment, and every credit card charged to the hilt, it's your own fault, not the credit card companies. Live like no one else so later on you can live like no one else! We loved seeing him in October and will probably go see him again this year.

Citrucel (not sugar free) tastes like Tang - really!
It might be the easiest thing to make into a habit because it tastes so good.
I don't believe in sugar coating the truth. I speak plainly and honestly. SM

If that offends some people, I'm sorry.  The only mistake I made in my previous post was to make the assumption that the original poster was a Christian and in making that assumption, I posted the passage of scripture from Matthew.  I don't know if the OP is a Christian or not.  So my post may or may not have been relevant to her.

But going on the assumption that she is a fellow Christian, we (Christians) are taught in Paul's Epistles to admonish one another which is what I was doing.  Her focus is on her neighbors.  Their reaction is where she is deriving her happiness.  If her focus was where it should be, she would never be disappointed.

I wouldn't trim beforehand either. Just wanted to second the pineapple-brown sugar preparation
toothpicks & maraschino cherries. I place the ham in the center of the pan, do the "diamond" studding with cloves, surround the ham with pineapple slices (have to admit it, I use the ones in heavy syrup),& then off & on sprinkle more brown sugar on top of the ham & pineapples & use a baster to douse the ham with the juices. Hubby had never had a ham prepared that way before let alone with pineapple - now he looks forward to it!! Guess my age and teachings are really showing here :o)
I think it tastes burnt. But I do like their iced coffee drinks, full of milk and sugar, LOL. nm
