When I was 19 years old, we finally had to put my cat down that I had gotten for my 3rd birthday. He was 17 years old. He all of a sudden started losing a ton of weight and was hardly eating anything, and he was sleeping all day and all night. We took him to the vet and found out that he had cancer. They gave us the option of taking him home and giving him IV medication every day, but we just didn't want to put him through all of that since he was so old and weak, so we put him down. I remember crying for days. He had been my best friend for 17 years. Also, right before that, we had 2 other cats (they had come to us as strays). The first one we had to put down about 3 years after she came to us because she had been very malnourished as a kitten and her health started to greatly decline. The second stray that we got had to be also put down about 2-3 years after taking him in (this was only months before having to put my 17 y/o down) because he went into severe renal failure. I remember taking him to the vet to be put down, and in the car, while he was sitting in my lap, a tear came from one of his eyes. I want to cry right now just thinking about it. I totally know what you are going through. I have 3 cats now, and they are all my baby boys.
