I live about an hour from NY and spend lots of time there. Here is a good web site for visiting the city when you are a newbie.

http://gonyc.about.com/od/newyorkcitybasics/Travelers_Introduction_to_New_York_City_Getting_Oriented_Maps_Tips.htm.

If he is taking the train into Grand Central, there is a plethora of information to obtain there. Train schedules, bus schedules, and subway maps.

The best advice I can give you right now is for him to go there ahead of time to get a lay of the land before he is under pressure. It is actually quite easy to find you way around.

And make sure he is equipped with the proper luggage for moving around his equipment.

The less conspicious he is, the less he will get hassled by the locals. But for the most part, people are quite friendly and more than willing to give directions or help you if you are direct and to the point with the questions.

Good luck!
