Don't live there, but visit as often as possible. One of the best web sites we use to get around the city is hopstop.com. You put in your starting and end point, and it gives you walking/subway directions with images, subway lines, etc.

Don't worry, Mom. NYC isn't such a big bad city. My daughter plans on going to college there next year, and even she has learned her way around the subways, streets, just from our visits.

Lugging around a bunch of samples will probably be his biggest obstacle in the crowds.

That is way down in lower manhattan
If you are going to South St. Seaport and are staying in Midtown, you might want to plan other things in that area while you are there. If you like Latin food, there is a restaurant called Cabana at South Street Seaport. Reasonable for lunch but expensive for dinner. It is on second floor and overlooks harbor. Also the downtown alliance has a free shuttle that takes you around lower manhattan. you get on and off at various points. http://www.downtownny.com/gettingaround/?sid=19

That way you can do Staten Island Ferry, ground zero, Brooklyn bridge, etc., and not get lost walking around in lower manhattan. It is not laid out like a grid down there and gets very confusing.

My daughter plans on going to college in NYC so we go often. Have a great time. Don't be afraid of the subway. It is a great experience. Going back to NYC in August. Cannot wait.
Anyone live or work in Manhattan recently? sm
We live in NE and our son has just taken a sales job where part of his territory is Manhattan. He cannot afford to say no, and we have no clue as to the subway system, best way to get around, garages to park, places to go and to avoid. The company just said, "Have a good holiday, see you Jan. 2." The company is not even located in NY, just his "territory."  We would like to help but feel totally lost. Any suggestions? We don't even have a clue as to how to take the subway system, how to pay, let alone which lines, etc. This is going to be a nightmare but we are trying to be positive for him, he has a family to support and mortgage to pay. You may e-mail me with some ideas. Money is tight as he's been looking for a job for a long time, things are rough. I can't get into what he'll be selling but the samples are very heavy to lug around NY city. I feel bad for him but he needs this job. Thanks for any clues on maps, etc. I am sure a Garmin would help but don't know a thing about them either or whether it would be stolen as it will not be built into his vehicle. Are the cheaper ones any good at all? He has enough heavy stuff to lug around. Thanks in advance.
