Need tips on teaching husband to be frugal..sm

Here is the situation...for quite some time I have been trying to be more frugal and really watch my spending and our money.  It seems my husband is doing the total opposite.  I asked him while at the store to get some fabric softener for the laundry.  He gets an $8.00 bottle and I know this store has Downy for $4.99.  To some people $3.00 may not seem like much, but over time it does add up.  We do not have the extra money that we used to and he thinks nothing of spending constantly.  I have said things to him and he does better for a little while, but then it gets out of control.  I had to convince him that he had to get a part-time job because we were sinking fast as he changed jobs and took and major pay cut.

He even asked me today after stating he wanted to go get something from the store why are we broke?  I said we are not totally broke, but we do not have the extra money to splurge either.  I go days without spending money.  Yes I work at home, but I do have to spend money on gas now because our oldest daughter started school this year.  Her lunch is $1.75 a day, but most days she wants to take her lunch box.  I am getting so frustrated with him.  I work two jobs myself as well as take care of the home and our kids (2).  I go to the grocery store and buy plenty of food (breakfast and lunch for him to take to work) and try to make sure that we are not going to the store just because, you end up spending way more money that way.  On the days he has to go to his part-time job he comes home before going to the part-time job.  I do not even see the real reason for coming home before going to the part-time job.  He is only home for 15-30 minutes before going to the part-time job.  The reason I think it is crazy for him to come home before going to his part-time job is the fact that it is 13 miles out of the way.  He is too old to break and too lazy to make the effort to change.  He is more about convenience.

Some times I think if we were to split he really would not survive.  I handle all the money and frankly after 14 years I have come to the conclusion he has no money sense.  He says I nickle and dime him to death, but money in his pocket is money definitely spent.  He has to spend it or die and then looks pitiful when he is broke.  But guess what, I'm to the point where I do not even care when he does not have money because he should be more sensible.  Just as long as he has money for gas to go to work, forget carrying around money.  I feel like sometimes I am having to lie about money simply because if he knows it is there he finds a reason to spend it.  I told him he will never have anything because he just cannot learn to do without.

I guess I am finished fuming for now.

BTW, there really is more to it than an $8.00 bottle of fabric softener, but over time it just builds....look for a bargain at least sometimes.

If your loan is an FHA-backed loan, you can contact the
to help you. Each state has one assigned to it by the FHA. I'm talking the FHA loans that are 5% down, sometimes bond money is available, etc. Not the one where payments are based on your income, etc.

Whatever you do, contact your mortgagor TODAY. Do NOT delay. Be realistic about what you can do financially to recover -- do not agree to terms you cannot realistically carry out.

You should have several options available to you before foreclosure is started. You might even try to do a quick sale of your home. You have until the very moment they auction that title off.

frugal sm
Depends on who is living home. We are not buying anything we don't need, making more home-cooked meals, turning down the thermostat and wearing a sweater, not going to the market unless we eat first so we won't buy more than we need. We are not going out as much and watching movies at home. I like yard sales, although my husband hates them, but I've found some kids movies, board games, etc., instead of buying new. I run a much tighter ship than I used to as far as wasting anything.  We bought the energy-saving lightbulbs but find it hasn't made much of a difference, but then again, the rates have gone up. Shopping at more than one store and reading labels carefully for fat content, calories, sodium, etc., and sometimes buying "private label" store products which sometimes are manufactured by the high-end companies using the private label of the store you buy it in, all you have to do is read, read, read, to be sure it isn't imported from a foreign country, etc. Cutting coupons, buying double on specials of the week, it's all common sense. We were too comfortable for a long time; now we are smartening up. But that's just our story as a family, perhaps we were just not walking the walk. Now we are finding things come out just as clean with cold water as hot, just ordinary cutbacks add up at the end of the week. Hope you get more posts on this.
Nothing wrong with being frugal.

While we have a good income, a mortgage, 2 car payments and an RV payment - we have managed to pay off all of our credit card debt and don't really need to be frugal at this point in our lives.  But every time I go shopping (mostly at Target and Walmart) I still head for the clearance racks first.  I love getting a good deal.

In fact, every time I go shopping my husband knows I can't come home and just show him what I bought, there is always a story first about what a great bargain it was. I told him if we won the lottery I would still shop on the clearance racks!

Need frugal tips
I love the fall but this is the time of year that I also get to thinking about summer vacation in order to start saving early.  I want to take my 7-year-old son to the beach.  Does anyone have any ideas for a cheap but fun vacation.  We would drive so I know packing to eat on the road would be one thing.  What else?  Is it cheaper to get a hotel or a condo?  Eat out or go to the grocery store?  ANY ideas would be greatly appreciated!! TY
Frugal ideas
In this day and with this economy situation we are dealing with in American right now, I am trying to think of ways to save money.  I am looking for frugal ways of cutting back.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  What are you doing to cutback and save money?
frugal ways
I cut my own hair and my children's. I switched to a Trac fone and got rid of cell bills. Food is a huge bill of mine so I try to make every meal stretch further (leftover meals etc). No more fast food or grabbing coffee out. I take out library books instead of buying them. They even have movie rentals for the kids.
frugal with my money.
I understand your frustration. My sister has had her own business for years, put up a website approximately 2 years ago and has not received 1 order from the website in 2 years. She doesn't understand why.

My take as a consumer is that I don't trust buying off websites of anything homemade. You don't know what you are getting, if the site is reputable, etc. Is your work guaranteed? I'm afraid I'm not very trusting with my money in these difficult times. No fan of Wal-Mart, but at least I can see what I'm buying and I can return it at any time.

I know it's frustrating but I wouldn't take it personally.
www.craigslists.com there is a frugal board
That when people start learning frugal techniques, that it then becomes fun, like a support group, with gentle competition who can get the best for the least.
I wish we could all go the week of the graduation but their graduations are always a week earlier th
ours. So actually all three of my kids are still in school this week while all of hers will already be out. My youngest is actually missing school to go but my two older kids have finals so they can't go at all that week.

Thank you. I guess I'm just trying to find a nice way to say it without causing friction and keeping the peace.

My DH is your typical male, just deal with it when the time comes whereas I want to take care of things right away without hurting anyone's feelings.
Why can't you take the loan for the 50% they -
offered and then payback immediately what you don't need? As long as there is no payback early penalty that is how I would get around that problem, that is if I am reading and understanding this right.
we just had to ask our in-laws for $500 loan
they're like a bank to us ;)

No, they wont LOAN us the 50% (sm)

Not a single bank wanted to loan us the money unless we paid all kinds of points and had a ridiculous interest rate - and only 1 out of 10 said they would do that.  The others turned us down flat.

I guarantee if I had half a dozen kids and was on some kind of government assistance we would qualify.

We will keep on keeping on, and hopefully something will change for the better.

thanks everyone for your responses.

FHA loan might work for you
Your credit score can be lower than for a conventional loan and you can get into the house with a down payment of only 3.5%. But I don't believe you can have BAD credit--more like fair. If you have anything unpaid (old bad debt, etc.), then they'll make you take care of those before they give you a loan.

Telling you the appraisal from 3 years ago isn't right, and he knows it. Valuations are down practically everywhere and, depending on your region, could be down substantially. And this business of getting his friend to appraise the house is shady, too. You sure this guy is a good guy?

Lots of people got into big trouble by buying a house before they were ready financially to do so. Tread carefully.

Has anyone had experience with a consolidation loan?

Stated Income Home Loan

I am a self-employed IC and have purchased 4 homes in 4 different states as a single person.  I was able to obtain a Stated Income Mortgage based on my credit, rather than my W2.  No tax info was used, needed or requested.  I guess, if your income is needed along with your husband's to qualify for a loan, then you would need the W2 info.  But as a single person you can obtain a home loan based on your credit and not your tax info.  Also, if you don't have enough for a down payment, you can take out a "second" against the house you are purchasing to finance your downpayment.  You will have a short-term payment for the downpayment and your 30 yr note on the home.  I was also able to obtain very low interest rates based on my credit rating.

Good luck, I did have to provide extra documents when I purchased one home with my exhusband.

Providing references when getting auto loan
I have to buy a car and the finance company (Capital One) requires 10 references. I don't know this many people. Has anyone been in a similar situation...what did you do?

I have family, but do not want them to know that I am buying a car. Any advice?
Have you considered a home equity loan to
pay off all your credit cards?
single wide are only kind to depreciate; hard to get loan

Guess he can take out a loan for future schooling! Son found a phone

Does your husband or significant other do this? Just now, at 7:30, my husband came home from sm

playing sports with a friend.  After showering he comes downstairs naked and tries to start a conversation with me. My "office" is in the living room and he is standing in back of the couch so I can't see any private parts, just him without his shirt, but I can see enough to know he clearly is naked! I think he wants me to be amused or get turned on or something, but I'm not amused one bit. In fact, I keep working and basically ignore him.

Poor guy. I swear he thinks he's Vince Vaughn or something. I should at least smile at him but all I want to tell him is to put some clothes on! ugh!

I went there for a week but never could get - sm
in the water as it was red flagged the whole time I was there. Stayed at the Oasis, very nice. Only went down to the beach once, ended up stepping on a bee, must have been one heck of a bee as it made me sick (or a reaction)--never had that happen before, luckily only for the rest of the day (2pm on), was fine the next day except for a sore foot. --I recommend Grand Cayman, great beaches, great snorkeling or scuba (the reefs there are amazing), the turtle farm is neat. Can be pricey but not too bad. I've been there about 5 x, plan on going again one of these days.
Since it has only been a week since
they were nursing, this is probably not abnormal, but it can't hurt to talk to the vet anyway. I also agree with below posters, definitely get this girl spayed. I raise show cats and this is most definitely the time of year the girls cycle the most, it is kitten season. Good luck.
The week from you know where

Not sure where to start here -- but I'll try to make this short and sweet.  In a roommate situation till I can get some bills paid.  Roomie sitch is a male and female couple and myself and I have a " significant other" who has lived with a male roomie for 12 years.  Nothing FUNNY is going on with the roommate situation and for me, here in the Miami area, just working and "digging out of the hole" so to speak. I rent a room am able to use the house where I live.

Thursday, I ended up getting a new cell phone after BATTLING with S carrier for a month.  It was a Motorola Q and while I know computers  -- this thing baffled me  -- Monday morning and it might be a return  -GRR.

Sorry, OLD lady here and I digress  -- anyway, with all the S***on Monday after being gone from my place for 3 weeks, the FEMALE roomie has done nothing but get on my case -- when I returned, unpacked, worked, and went to Long John Silvers.  The rest of the week, I had frozen shrimp and used a SMALL portion of her pasta. What I did not eat was put in a plastic container  and sealed in the fridge.Basically griping the whole week  -- NOTE -- she does not work and her BF supports

Thursday, was on the phone with Sprint, got new phone, went to Wal-Mart and got my haircut (after about a month and a half) and back to the house.  I then tried to get "new phone" working right and on with techs to very little avail, so gave it up and went to bed.  SO called me Friday morning and I loaded my car to make the trip to Miami  -- Friday afternoon, I get a call from the "female roomie" about the "mess I had left  -- 1 plate in the sink from pasta she had made and OFFERED, the restt of the shrimp was in the fridge, and when I cook, I clean afterwards.  The only thing in the sink was a plate, fork and coffee cup  -- I get a call Friday and she was BALLISTIC --telling me that she wasnt my maid etc -- HELLO?

Saturday, I was busy cause the new phone didnt work right and my son and his GF flew down here to go on a cruise so not online at all  -- I sign in late tonight and she had sent threats via my Yahoo account -- I really, HONESTLY think that because her "boyfriend controls her"  Here again too, she has no DL  -- NO car and if she dosent answer her phone, he would call my cell, but that changed when I changed my #  --

I'm rambling but...is this a thing where I call the "authorities" ?  I have done enough psych transcription -- BUT to get her to a hospital Im not sure what to do.

I am sooooooooo sorry that this was long but 3:45 here and I am REALLY scared of going back there tomorrow

Thanks

I saw a guy last week
who had been a teacher for a school, band and choir I think, who got the 3-X out for being "boring" or something to that effect.  Not sure if he is the same guy you are looking for.
During the week, they can SM

Go to after school activities (including sports), work (very limited hours) and church.  They are allowed on Friday and Saturday (I have two teens by the way) to make any plans that they want within reason of course.  Sunday is for church and family dinner unless other arrangements are made WAY in advance.  I have two younger ones too and they will have to abide by the same.

Good luck!

We usually eat out once a week. On the
nights I don't feel like cooking, I have frozen dinners in the freezer, soups, make grilled cheese, and I always have leftovers from the nights I do cook.

My kids love pizza, so our "eat out night" is usually Pizza Hut or Papa Murphy's takeout.
About once a week sm
She is a small poodle, less than 2 years old. She runs outside every chance she gets and gets under the deck. She also sleeps on my bed every night and I will not sleep with something that smells bad. If I enjoyed that sort of thing, I would still be married.

She has very fine, wavy poodle hair. She is oily and if she doesn't have a bath at least every 10 days, she freezes in the winter, even in her cute little sweaters. I give her a bath, let her dry in front of the faux fireplace, and brush her a bit. Next day, she is perfectly warm in her little sweaters and warmer at night too. If she goes very long, she develops so much eye snot that she can't see well. I do my own grooming and I keep her properly trimmed about every other week.

End result is: Gorgeous little apricot poodle who looks adorable and smells like flowers. No dry skin, no flaking, almost never scratches at all unless she has had to go a whole 2 weeks without a bath. This is not too frequently for this dog.
We are at 1-2 x a week, usually just on - sm
the weekends though, and usually quickies as the kids are always here......I am so tired at night that anything more than a quickie is rare and maybe once a month.--My DH is the one who initiates as my sex drive went in the toilet 10 years ago with my first pregnancy and just never came back. I still enjoy it just lost the "urge" for it I guess.
I think this week for sure it's going
to be Matt or Allison. Kris keeps hanging on because the young girls think he's hot, but I actually prefer Matt to Kris voice-wise...

I think Gokey was AWESOME last night, as usual. :)
once a week maybe.
Used to go out more but got sick of eating out. It began to taste all the same. Plus, during the summer, my husband grills out 2 to 3 times a week and it's GREAT!
also once a week....nm

WHAT A WEEK!!!!
We lost Michael, Farrah, and Ed McMahon!!! I don't follow "celebrities" all that much, but wow! I can't believe 3 in one week.
Same thing I think every week...he needs to go!
If you haven't watched tonight's AI yet, I don't want to spoil anything so don't read this if you don't want to hear anything. All I can say is...what was up with that crying little girl??? But then again, she cried when Melinda sang too so maybe she does have some taste after all!
Did not see the preview from last week.
Well that is good news to see him up and about. Hopefully that will happen today, maybe.

Yes, so sad when Nick and Sharon were screaming and then Nick trying to get back in. May be Nick and Sharon will reunite because of this. I like them together.

I am watching while I am working too. Really hard to get anything done.
In another preview from last week
we saw him sitting up. Hopefully that is a good sign. Didn't your heart just break when you saw Nick trying to run back in the building? OOOOOHHHH, I get too involved. LOL
I have for a week and a half now
I started it a week ago Sunday.. that would be the 17th. I have had absolutely no "treatment effects" as they call them. I have watched what I eat and have switched to some lower fat or no fat products, as far as like cheese, salad dressings, sour cream, things like that. I don't really eat a lot of fatty meat anyway, so that hasn't been anything to deal with. The changes have been pretty simple actually, pretty easy to make. Also with Alli, it only works around the meal that you take it with. So, if you basically want to watch your fat for most lunches and dinners, as I'm doing, you just take it for those two meals. I don't worry about it with breakfast because I usually just have cereal anyway. If you have some occasion planned, dinner out, might be having a meal with more than 15 g or so of fat, just don't take it. It is pretty simple really and if it does nothing else, it keep you honest with those meals you eat when you take it.
uh, your ankle was like that for a week before you went in
"needless to say I am still in pain"....maybe you should not have walked on it for a week without getting medical treatment for it; that is not the hospital's fault....do you see the irony of your statement?
Yep, for over a week now, in Missouri
nm
I go to the gym 5 days a week
and I own my own treadmill, stationary bike, and some weights. I have always had a thin build and always played sports as a kid and as a teenager, and have always been very active (I'm 26 now). I guess that's how I do it. I'd go insane if I didn't work out.
I use AVG and also run spybot once a week. (nm)

She was in hospital almost a week before she had him...
Sorry I didn't mention that he took off a week before she had the baby. But yeah he has went back to work according to her mom. I think she is embarrassed about his feet but I have told her that she need not be he is a sweet adorable baby. How could someone make fun of a baby? When I do ask to speak to her her mom will say she is busy or something. I say well the baby must be really keeping her busy and her mom says no actually he sleeps most of the time. The baby was checked by the doctor and he said completely healthy baby other than the clubbed feet. I thought about dropping by but her mom had said that she just wished people would not come over. And one of my other friends "dropped" in and her mom called me and was kind of acting like they thought that was rude to come unannounced. So I don't know how to go about it. I did call during the time she has been home but her mom said her husband was off so I know she wouldn't talk. She is very strict about no phone calls when they are together. It is weird to me but she is a very good friend. But I would still call and ask her mom how her and the baby were anyway and some days her mom would call me just to chat. I don't know I kind of feel like I have lost my friend. I will have to send a card.
Sounds like us, we were in the 70s last week and
now have 3 inches of snow.
coming up soon, next week I think...

Mine was doing that just last week!

I was gonna toss it, because it's just this little mouse that looks like a ladybug (queer, I know, but I'm like that!).  My husband is a gadget freak and took it apart, which consisted of removing 1 screw to separate the "shell."  Inside it was a TON of lint that was messing up the wheel.  He just blew it out and it was good to go.  Might want to give that a shot before ya chuck it.  This mouse is an optic mouse though, no ball on the bottom.  On the old ones, you can remove the ball and clean it as well if that's the case.

I just saw those at Walgreens this week nm

Yes, I posted in regards to this last week. sm
My post, however, got deleted. I did receive an email from administration saying it was fixed and it did appear fixed for a day or two, but is now back again. VERY FRUSTRATING!@
I bought a new car a week ago...
If anyone cares. A brand new Kia Spectra. I got a great deal on it. They gave me a $2000 rebate so that meant no down payment. And they took off an additional $500 for applying for it on the internet. I love the car and it gets around 35 mpg. So that is my good news!
1K a week? wow, no wonder you remember with such sm
nostalgia! I started MT in 1984 at 4.25/hr; minimum wage. I NEVER heard of anyone making those kind of bucks!
