Tax free shopping
Thanks for the information. I haven't checked yet to see if NY is included, but I know we do have them every year. We usually go, we have what I think is a higher tax than most states. I know the poster below equated it to shopping the day after Thanksgiving, but I love it. I find it challenging and for me it's the start of Christmas shopping for the family.
No birth control sales, no candy sales,

CHANTILLY, Va. — A new drug store at a Virginia strip mall is putting its faith in an unconventional business plan: No candy. No sodas. And no birth control. Divine Mercy Care Pharmacy is among at least seven pharmacies across the nation that are refusing as a matter of faith to sell contraceptives of any kind, even if a person has a prescription.

States across the country have been wrestling with the issue of pharmacists who refuse on religious grounds to dispense birth control or morning-after pills, and some have enacted laws requiring drug stores to fill the prescriptions.

In Virginia, though, pharmacists can turn away any prescription for any reason.

"I am grateful to be able to practice," pharmacy manager Robert Semler said, "where my conscience will never be violated and my faith does not have to be checked at the door each morning."

Semler ran a similar pharmacy before opening the new store, which is not far from Dulles International Airport. The store only sells items that are health-related, including vitamins, skin care products and over-the-counter medications.

On Tuesday, the pharmacy celebrated a blessing from Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde. While Divine Mercy Care is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, it is guided by church teachings on sexuality, which forbid any form of artificial contraception, including morning-after pills, condoms and birth control pills, a common prescription used by millions of women in the U.S.

"This pharmacy is a vibrant example of our Holy Father's charge to all of us to wear our faith in the public square," said Loverde, who sprinkled holy water on the shelves stocked with painkillers and acne treatments. "It will allow families to shop in an environment where their faith is not compromised."

The drug store is the seventh in the country to be certified as not prescribing birth control by Pharmacists for Life International. The anti-abortion group estimates that perhaps hundreds of other pharmacies have similar policies, though they have not been certified.

Earlier this year in Wisconsin, a state appeals court upheld sanctions against a pharmacist who refused to dispense birth control pills to a woman and wouldn't transfer her prescription elsewhere. Elsewhere, at least seven states require pharmacies or pharmacists to fill contraceptive prescriptions, according to the National Women's Law Center. Four states explicitly give pharmacists the right to turn away any prescriptions, the group said.

The Virginia store's policy has drawn scorn from some abortion rights groups, who have already called for a boycott and collected more than 1,000 signatures protesting the pharmacy.

"If this emboldens other pharmacies in other parts of the state, it could really affect low-income and rural women in terms of access," said Tarina Keene, executive director of the Virginia chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League.

Robert Laird, executive director of Divine Mercy Care, believes many of the estimated 50,000 Catholics within a few miles of the store will support its mission and make up for the roughly 10 percent of business that contraceptives represent in a typical pharmacy.

Whether Catholics will be drawn to the pharmacy is uncertain. According to a Gallup poll published last year for an extensive study of U.S. Catholicism called American Catholics Today, 75 percent of U.S. Catholics said you can still be a good Catholic even if you don't obey church teachings on birth control.

Catherine Muskett said she plans to shop at the drug store even though she lives more than 20 miles away.

"Obviously it's good to support pro-life causes. Every little bit counts," said Muskett, one of about 75 people who crowded into the tiny shop for Tuesday's ceremony.

Look into the state where you live.
Most now have online FAQ sections. Look for child custody or friend of the court with your state. I know in my state they mandate court appointed psychological evaluations. They do them as a mix of the family. (i.e. father-son, son only, mother-son, and so on.) I think this format would definitely be in your favor.
What state do you live in?....sm
I had no idea you could make up to that much. That must be just in the state where you live. I haven't seen anything around here like that, but I will keep my eyes open.
I think a lot depends on the state you live in.....
Sometimes the houses are in really bad shape inside. Is it empty? Are you able to go look in the windows? Also, if the past owners are still in there, you may have to pay to have them evicted and, depending on the type of people they are, they may destroy the place before they move out. You need to check the laws in your state/county/municipality. Good luck!
I live for state fairs!

I'll drive up to 2 hours away...I especially love the really small country fairs.  The more animals and ag displays, the bigger my smile.  I always don my overalls and boots too--gotta maximize the overall hayseed effect doncha know, plus you never know when you're gonna step in poo so might as well dress appropriately!   ;-)

Yuck for you! What state do you live in? sm
Crowns are a lot more expensive here in Georgia, especially around the Atlanta area, going rate is $1800. Crazy isn't it?
A few things . . . what state do you live in?

In Michigan, we have a mandatory reporting law.  That cop was wrong.  All law enforcement, medical, mental health, teacher, and clergy are mandated by law to report any signs of abuse they are aware of.  He should have helped you or gave some advice.

Get your kids out of the situation now.  This is abuse, both physical and mental.  There is also sexual abuse involved, in regards to his grabbing you and harrassing you.  The domestic violence shelter can help.  They will help you get a lawyer.  The court should make him move out of the house so you and the kids can live there until the divorce is final.  I don't know all the legalities of it, but get out now.

Is gas still high where you live? $2.45 to 2.90 in lower NY state. nm
s
its crazy but it depends on what state you live in.
here in Missouri there is no law stating that a kid has to be any certain age to be left home alone.  isnt that rediculous????crazy..makes no sence.  my nextdoor neighbors kids are home everyday after school for 3-5 hours...depending on what time the mom gets off work, they are 9-girl and 6-boy..she checked on the laws before telling me cuz she knew i would turn her in.  i just told her adn the kids if they ever needed anything, i am right next door...but i cant babysit.
It depends on the state you live in with regard to the requirements to get a CPA.

If you live in Florida and have State Farms insurance
you might start looking for others. State Farm is pulling out of the insurance business in Florida.
rent shoe shopping or handbag shopping

Precious! Many places will have state-to-state drivers form a chain

Think you can go to dot.state to get h'way conditions, but here in lower NY state, we've been

You're free to pray, but not free to discriminate
It's as simple as that.
Most sales like that are NOT available on
line. The whole point of the early morning sales are to get people in the store.
Exactly why I never go to the crazy sales.

People go insane during the holiday shopping season.

After Christmas sales

Wow, the last few days have been fantastic! 50 percent off and 60 and 70 percent off all merchandise, Christmas and other... Toys at a bargain. I tell you, from now on I am saving my cash for after Christmas to buy gifts for people for the whole year...  Give simple things for the holiday and then go spend for the whole year at a fraction of the price the days after Christmas.

Only 1 error for me this year... I actually got gift cards and cash for Christmas because I am always crabbing I never have money in my wallet just for me. So what do I do? go to Walmart and K-Mart with the KIDS and get hornswaggled into getting them more stuff. Yep. Between groceries and them I have exactly approximately 60 cents in change, no lie! Shame on ME. I cut down from Santa this year to show them the meaning of Christmas, but because they are good consumers on sales and good con artists to me (puppy eyes) I gave all my money away.  Never again.  Never ever again. That will be my Christmas gift to me to keep that promise.

So, love the sales, but beware to save ahead of time and don't bring the kids!!!

Happy New Year everyone and may 2008 be the best year yet!

Melaleuca sales

Someone I recently met is selling Melaleuca products and supposedly making a good profit.  He wants me to start selling these products, too....first of all, I think it's a pyramid scheme, like Amway....and I don't know anyone who has had a GOOD experience with Amway.  He says it isn't, though.  He says I'll work for myself.  Hmm.  Do any of you guys know about this company?  I'm getting bad feeling about it.  However, I'm broke and could use the extra $$$.

Liquid Tide, but I look for sales.

Yeah, c'mon, don't you think their sales are down?
Seems like an effort to win back their customers to me.
That's why people go to yard sales - to look for things
that people don't know the value of and are selling cheaply.
...Look for sales if at all possible if purchasing ahead of time. nm
s
Hey trose, I've had many yard sales over the years and have

seem some pretty surprising stuff go on, only to watch people battle off and jump in their "fancy" cars.  I've had people set a whole pile of stuff in front of me and throw a 5 at me and try to take off knowing that what they had cost more. I had one lady say "quarter?" over and over and over trying to buy two folding lawn chairs and I kept saying, "NO." She finally gave up and left.  I've had people steal right out from under my nose and jump in their "fancy" cars and take off.  I've had a whole "family" of Mexicans pile out of a very nice van and converge upon my yard sale with one person trying to keep my attention while their family members steal whatever they could from me.  When I saw a one of the kids stick an X-Box game in his shirt, I told him he had to pay for it and he tried to walk away.  When my husband came up on the boy, the father tried to start a fight with my husband.  My neighbor called the police and when they arrived they had the adults and teens in cuffs and the children in the back of a unit.  Turned out they were illegal and were arrested and hauled off and then a tow truck came and got the van.

I haven't had a yard sale in a long, long time.

I agree; also you don't sell stuff like that at yard sales.
Save it for ebay or something like that. Tough lesson learned.
LinK, see my post below. People do go to yard sales

for the reasons you stated, but it was very underhanded that the woman would snatch up the doll for $2.00 knowing she was buying it from a little girl when the mother wasn't looking.  It was just plain wrong.

I do live in Arkansas - my parents live up in Branson so I'm in Missouri quite often!

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm

I have a dilemma.  I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about.  At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food.  This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed.  I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him.  Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him.  Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would  never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously).  I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety.  I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care.  At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment.  Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold?  I know there are lots of animal lovers out there.  What does everyone think??

I'm a live-and-let-live person but had to draw the line

after I found HUGE holes in the walkway between my house and barn.  I thought they were just little mice stealing grain, but then I spotted one and it was a HONKIN RAT!  My poor olderly cat was out there with me at the time and saw it, and he hissed at it and ran away!

I asked for advice on what to do at a local agricultural board, because I have other animals and didn't want to use poison and conventional traps weren't working.  They advised putting a large pale of water out with some seeds floating in it, figuring the rats would go for the seeds and end up drowning.  That was a no-go because the water just froze up solid.  I wound up reluctantly going with Decon because I just can't have my house destroyed.  I haven't had seen any more rats or evidence of them stealing grain, so I'm guessing they have died.  The guy at the grain store promised me the rats would not die in the building and stink the joint up, rather they would crawl off and die outside.  I don't know if I believe that, as it is still winter here and decomposition would be holding off until it warms up.  We'll see, but at least the destruction has been halted.

Good luck and I too say have no mercy, because you just don't need them destroying hour house or causing a spark chewing wires and burnin' the place down.  It is war!

Shopping
No, no Christmas shopping here. We are Jewish so that would be kind of weird. :) Channukah a minor Jewish holiday, and celebrated quietly in our home with small gifts each night for the little one (she's 4) and the other two (15 and 17), they get one medium to large gift (i.e. ipod, dvd player.)

I'm glad I don't have to deal with all the "hoopla" that seems to surround Christmas. How do you all focus on the meaning of your holy day with all the..stuff??..that seems to go along with Christmas?
Well, not actually shopping but tell you what I have done
I am on a mission and I mean get on the train or get left behind. I have the dinner for everyone here this year. I have painted rooms, bought new furniture, had new tile put in 3 rooms, getting new counters for my kitchen, got new carpet put in master bedroom and closet, bought new China for the dinner- I started all this in January knowing full well what I wanted to accomplish. I am an Aries and believe me when I tell you, I want things done yesterday. I should have all I want accomplished by that time. I have a honey-do list for hubby- he has put off a few things but better get with the program.
No - she went shopping.
She's a shopper. :oD

But she can also wear it to a Renaissance Fair. Not sure if this is the one she goes to, but something like this.

Shopping
As a good start to ending this bad habit, maybe you could return some of the outfits that have the tags on and just keep one as that "someday" outfit.

As far as food, do you make a list when you go out shopping? Maybe you could make a budget/grocery list and do your food shopping that way. It may be easier for you to control your bad habit if you go this route.

Hope some of these ideas help you.
Make them live outside? This is so funny! Ours live outside, where they WANT to be. sm
Not all dogs want to be in "indoor" dogs, mind you. They have plenty of space to run around and play, fenced, and if they are brought in during bad weather they whine at the back door to go back out! So before you comment on outside dogs, you really need to get your facts straight. Seriously. Not all dogs are made or want to be inside all of the time.
mystery shopping

Mystery shopping...Has anyone taken part in any of these jobs with a reputable company?

Mystery Shopping
How are you paid? Is it a reimbursement thing? Also, did you pay a membership fee? Thanks!
re:mystery shopping
I belonged to a few. I rarely did the shops. Some only pay like 10 or 20 dollars. Some are not fun. Many were too far away. And a lot of gas stations for some reason, for example you had to take pictures with a digital camera of the inside if they had a store, certain areas outside, the bathroom, etc. One was a vacuum shop - I don't even remember what that one entailed, didn't do it. The restaurant ones are nice, free meal for 2 usually, but of course not too many of those! Free membership for the ones I joined. Definitely not a dream job to make lots of money. Could be interesting though and get you out of the house.
Do your shopping online.
I've been doing all my Xmas shopping online for 6 years now. Way better than dealing with the crowds at malls and stores.
secret shopping
Do you make pretty good money doing this?  Is it worth taking the time or do you just do it for fun?  I went to the website you listed and am seriously considering joining...more info would be very much appreciated...
Internet shopping

Does anyone else who works from home use the internet for most of their shopping or to surf the web during work?  I had a MT service owner who complained to me that he had a hard time getting his "girls" to work since implementing the internet - that they spent their work time on QVC or HSN.  I never thought about going to other sites (other than for references) while working, but apparently this is a big pull for some of us - I just can't imagine having time to shop while trying to work.

I'd take a friend shopping with you.
She can help you try new things that you might not think to. I did this for a friend and she got a bigger reaction than the bride, LOL. Okay, that's because she'd lost 100 lbs, but everybody was excited about the dress we chose. She hadn't lost all her weight yet, and she might have rejected the dress just because a back slit showed her calves, which looked wonderful, but she didn't know it. Then we picked out jewelry. A salesman was also very helpful. She was stunning and it was so much fun.
Well, I have a large shopping bag (sm)
hanging in the spare room closet and have about 4-5 little stocking stuffers already purchased and in there. Does that count?
Going to shopping at IKEA
so we can start organizing my daughter's unbelievably messy room
Mattress shopping
Anyone have an opinion?  Pillow top?  Memory foam?  I currently have moderately priced pillow top that I bought last winter that just goes on top of the mattress.  I have been able to fluff it up until just recently, but there doesn't seem to be any more fluffing to be done.
Mattress shopping
Hi, had a pillow top (trying to give away, are you close) and husband hated it.  I liked the snuggling sensation but he just complained and complained.  Finally had to shut him up and bought a standard mattress. UGH   Kept the mattress in a latex wrap the entire time, it is looking for a new home before going to the dump.
Christmas Shopping
If anyone here is interested in some fun Christmas shopping with an MT who has a store on eBay, please use this web address to go right to my ebay store: sallyglamourgirl.com

If you buy anything from me either in the store or at regular auction and let me know you're from this board I'll give you 15% off! Happy Holidays! Love being an MT for over 13 years, but also love eBay:):):)
Agree! Won't see me shopping on any Fri. or Sat. until after
s
Has anyone gone shopping yet today?
It is 8:00 a.m. EST and I have not yet attempted to even go shopping.  I usually love the day after Thanksgiving.  But I don't really even feel like going... Maybe it is that we have less money this year with the price of gas going up.  Maybe I ate too much turkey... I really do want to get that "excitement" of looking forward to this crazy Black Friday, but all I feel like doing is cleaning the house.  Anybody else feel like this? And if you are having a great time today, please explain so I can get some of that Holiday spirit! Thanks in advance.
No shopping today
However I did notice the malls are opening at 4:00 a.m. (??) and I think my daughter is going.  I don't intend to go anywhere near there this weekend!  Probably just to to the movies and chill out at home with my dog!   (and try to get over eating too much 7 layer salad on Thanksgiving!)
