took the "spare the rod and spoil the child" thing out of context, and started using a plank on us when we were around 12, which was ridiculous because spilled milk was about the extent of infractions. But he would also use other violent moves on us because of his temper, such as a "snakebite" (twisting skin on arm that can result in a spiral fracture), or taking me by my wrist and smashing my elbow on the table.
By the time I was 14 I was nearly his height, and because of all his violence toward his kids, I had no respect for him whatsoever. One day he started hitting me for nothing, and I responded by kicking him on his shinbone with my hardsoled shoe, using just a portion of the fury I'd built up in my young life.
He instantly saw that violence cures nothing, and never hit any of us again.
