Quit cold turkey because

Posted By: Sadie on 2007-06-08

admitted to the hospital with asthma exacerbation and put on theophylline. That is probably the worst thing ever, sped me up, no sleeping, sweating and I swore if I could get out of the hospital never again. That was 1998 and not 1 cigarette after then. I hated the theophylline more than I loved the cigarettes. What I thought would be outpatient treatment in the emergency room that day changed into a 2 week stay. I was put on prednisone and gained 26 lbs in 2 weeks, horrible. If a doctor now says prednisone, I said what is my second choice? I am remarried and thank goodness stopped the smoking, this hubby is so much against it. I never, though, call anyone else down on their habit if they smoke because I have been there myself.

Quit cold Turkey 2 months ago. Still want one. Ugh

Quit cold turkey Thanksgiving day 1989
but was hospitalized and put on Theophylline. Now some might like this medicine, acted like speed and I was up for 2 days and 2 nights, sweating, hair sweaty, bed wet. I hated this and said dear Lord please let me get home and never smoke another cigarette and did not. The cure I hated more than I loved the cigarettes.
Second day of quitting cold turkey...

Today is my second day of quitting smoking cold turkey. I have some patches, but that is it. I am determined I will quit this time though, without a doubt.

This morning has been really hard not having a smoke with my coffee. My nerves are just on edge.

Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!!

Both my mom and aunt have had very good success with it. My mom, smoker for over 40 years, quit cold
turkey and says Chantix is the best drug out there - she tried everything!

I see that there are mixed feelings about this drug as with all drugs. Works for some and doesn't work that well with others. Sorry to hear about their experience!
BTW, lots of left over turkey, so turkey croquettes or tetrazini tonight!,,,,sm
because of healthy diets we are either going to grow feathers and molt due to the poultry, OR fish scales from all the fish...think feathers are prettier and softer, myself!
turkey
This works in a roaster or oven

Melt about a stick of butter add to taste salt, pepper. Chop celery into one to two inch pieces.
Chop onions into large pieces.

After rinsing the turkey and draining the water out you pour the butter mixture into the bird turning it to coat the whole inside. Then stuff the cavity of the bird with the celery and onions (personally I add some garlic as well).

You then place the bird in your pan and rub the breast skin with softened butter the sprinkling with your own choice of spices.

If you have questions feel free to email. BTW you never ever get a dry bird when you cook it this way and have lots of drippings for dressing/gravy. Hope you have a great Holiday!

Popup on ham?? Seen on turkey.
Have a contest going on here. Someone says she has seen a popup which shows a ham is done and I said have not, seen on turkeys. Anyone know is this true or ?
Turkey should never be "bacon."
That is so wrong...its like having a chicken hot dog!
You can use them in turkey chili for one
thing. DH is the cook, but he does that. After adding chili powder it will still taste like chili, which he puts basil in anyway.

Ground turkey (brown first)

tomato sauce
canned tomatoes
onion
canned red beans
canned black beans
frozen lima beans
Picsweet frozen corn added near end of cooking time.

Add browned ground turkey and all ingredients in a crock pot and cook together, except hold the corn out until near the end for sweetest, freshest zing in your chili. The frozen limas and corn are colorful and fresh-tasting additions, we find.
That little thingy that is at the end of the Turkey?
looks like a fan do yall cook that or cut it off?I saw Martha Stewart cook her's and she left it on
HELP! Turkey Day dilema

We are going to MILs for Turkey Day.  She made a big thing out of doing dinner and everything for her family this year.  My husband just went to her house and comes home to tell me we are going to starve tomorrow.  lol  There are 9 people in the immediate family and she has invited at least 4 other people that we know of.  She is making a small turkey breast, 4 potatoes for mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner rolls and that's it!  Oh, and an apple and cherry pie.  Nothing else.  Any ideas on how I can creatively make food to take without upsetting her.  I am already bringing a pecan pie and pumpkin pie because I was "in the mood."  Any suggestions, ideas?  We are expected to spend the entire day and evening down there.  Already made plans to play cards, games, etc. and make a day out of it when I get off work.

Does anyone have a good turkey recipe?? SM

Due to last week's turn of events I'm having turkey day at my house with my husband and kids.  I've never cooked a turkey before.  I have a very large slow cooker/roaster I've never used before and would like to cook it in there.  What kid of spices do you put on it.  I've got the stuffing taken care of, but am not sure what to do with the outside of the turkey.  I'd like it to have some special flavoring if possible.

TIA for the ideas.

You're welcome! Turkey breasts are often
in the frozen section with the whole turkeys.
Thanks! See, I didn't know you had to rinse the turkey like that! Hopefully, mom sm
will respond and tell me everything I need to know?
Speaking of 5:00. Well, I would be up at that time if I was returning home from dancing or the bar. Wait, in fact, I think I did come home on morning and find her cooking that early! Of course I went to sleep for the rest of the day. Yes, sad indeed.
Go to butterball.com for every turkey thing you need to know.
s
Why does everyone get up so early to cook a turkey? - sm
the only think I can figure is you must eat it at noon. We would get up around 8, make the stuffing, prepare the bird, stuff it and put it in the oven between 10-11. This would be an 18-21 pound turkey, cook it 20 mins per pound, so we would pull it out about 5, then make the homemade gravy (took a good 30 mins to do that), prepare the mashed potatoes, and eat about 6. In between we have a relaxing day of playing board games, watching football or James Bond movies. All I ever see is, mom got in the middle of the night and put the turkey in the oven before we were even awake......either that was one heck of a big bird or they ate turkey for breakfast or lunch. (or else it came out dry as a rock).
We play also but call it Turkey Leg. It really is fun. nm
!
She said TURKEY BACON which is much lower in sat fat, etc. sm
I did Weight Watchers for years and I'd eat something like this, if you were judiciously using the bacon/cheese.
1. Stuffing cooked in turkey!
2. Sweet potato casserole.
3. Fruit salad.

we usually also have homemade rolls, another vegetable and cranberry sauce, sometimes mashed potatoes with the gravy too...

i love the homemade chunky cranberry sauce, but no one else does...
It is turkey and bacon and tomatoes
between slices of bread with a cheese sauce poured over the top. Different places here use different cheese sauces and they are delicious.
Pour 1-2 cans of 7-Up soda over the turkey sm
after it has cooked for about 1-2 hours and baste as well. I usually use more soda and inject it into the turkey with a turkey injecter as well as basting it. Then, I use the drippings with the soda and make it into a gravy. It's sweet and gives the BEST flavor I have ever tasted. My mother-in-law told me years ago to do that and I have been doing it ever since.
I won a Thanksgiving turkey giveaway and got to be on the news. sm
they filmed me picking it up, etc. won it on website entries where we had to find the turkey everyday for like 2 weeks and then they drew names.
History Channel and a turkey sandwich!

Every now and again I get WICKED insomnia myself...definitely stress related.  It totally sucks too, I know what you're goin' through.  Throws everything outta whack.

Tylenol PM works really well for me...just one tablet and I'm out for a minimum of 9 hours.  Wine will make me sleepy but really just puts me out for a 2-3 hour nap.  Otherwise, just my daily chores and typin' work is enough to make me want to be in bed by 7 and not get up until the alarm goes off at 5.

"They" say to set a schedule and try to stick to it.  No naps during the day, and the bedroom is only for sleeping and, er, well no tv and no food anyway ;-)  I also use a white-noise machine (actually just a fan that I affectionatly call "noisy fan") and have one of those Plug-Ins in a relaxing scent (lilac).

Being anal retentive, I find I can fall asleep easiest knowing that all the house stuff is done (dishes, laundry, coffee maker prepped, etc) and when I get up everything is clean and ready for the next day.

Good luck with it all...have the hot flashes hit yet?

Bacon, lettuce, tomatoe, turkey...
Basically a big old sandwich. mmmm
The first turkey I made and I invited my poor dad over . . sm
I cooked the poor bird with the green bag of giblets inside!!!!   I will NEVER forget the look on my dad's face when it appeared from nowhere!   I was 25 then. Many years and good meals ago. . . LOL.  Sorry,  you asked!

Hi  A few weeks ago I thought I saved a recipe from Shop-rite for a Whole Turkey Breast with sliced oranges on top.  I cannot find it and I cannot find a recipe similar to it online.

Does anyone havve a good recipe for baking a turkey breast that will spice it up instead of just plopping it in the oven.   I am having my daughter's future inlaws for dinner   TIA.

Looking to quit my job.
I had recently 2 weeks ago barrowed $2500 from my 401k in order to make ends meet during the holiday season.  I am unhappy with my current employer and would like to look for another job but they say that if I leave before that loan is paid off then I will have 3 months to pay it back (i cannot) or I have to pay tax penelties.  Well my question is,would it go on this years taxes or next years taxes if I quit before 12/31
I have never taken anything to help me quit, but (sm)
I have quit several times for years at a time, and I always did it cold turkey.  The only way I got through it was because I TRULY WANTED TO QUIT.  Is it possible that they really don't WANT to quit, they just THINK THEY SHOULD?  This may not make sense to a nonsmoker, but that is the point I am at now.  I know I should quit, just don't want to, and I don't believe I would no matter what I took.  It's a mindset, I think.
Then just keep doing what you are doing and quit
complaining and live with it.
Quit your job -

A shot of something might help, blackberry brandy, etc. Or that old tryptophan standby, a turkey

Strangest things? hmmm. Vintage Turkey Basters
Yup, sounds weird I know. It started with one of my grandmothers from the 1940s or 50's. They are glass with the rubber bulb on the end, but the reason why I like them is because of the interesting packaging tube they come in.. Vintage ads PYREX, etc. Usually with a picture of a big Juicy Turkey, etc. I like the coloring too, kind of primary colors but sort of faded with age. Got three of them right now displayed on top of my kitchen cabinets, along with a BUNCH of roosters (way too many), also collect antique crocks.
I also have about 50 Vernon Kilnz (sp?) plates, the kind with scenes from different states, etc. They sort of tell a story about each place. Once had an idea I would do a bed and breakfast someday and use them, so they just sit in the cupboard, all lonely, etc. Yup, if I see any of these things at the flea market or antique shops, I pick'em up, it's like a compulsion or something... just can't help myself.
Looking for turkey day suggestions for fussy kids who hate everything but brownies!
Everything else is greeted with - "yuck" only the grownups eat anything. Posted below what the grownups like. Now if I could get the kids to eat!
But I wonder how many people REALLY quit going
to these stores. I know my SIL never quit WalMart even though she was devastated because "they" (whoever they are) were taking Christmas away from her. Seems like a lot of talk but not a lot of ACTUAL action.
will you quit attacking - I never said....sm

I never said anything bad about Koreans or him being Korean - you have no idea who you are typing at on this board...I am so not racist and so tolerant but you'd have no clue about that.

At the time I posted it was a 23-y/o Korean THE DETAILS of the details of who did the shooting had not hit the newswires UNTIL THEN.

Please get over yourself.

Quit tripping
I hate no one but I sure dislike him quite a bit. If you read my post correctly, I said HE wanted Iraq to share the oil, that means we do not have, correct?? Useless conflict, lost lives, another Viet Nam and might as well cut your losses and leave. Over 2000 years of unrest in that land and the US is supposed to change. Ha! I for one am so glad about the standoff being him and the senate with him being unable to afford his war anymore.
Yep, me. I quit my hospital job sm
to work at home just because I got tired of some mean people in the office complaining I was always in the bathroom. Like I really wanted to be there.
I quit 3 months ago!
I feel great! I can even be around others and not have a craving. I am just starting to be bothered by the smell.

GOOD LUCK! YOU CAN DO IT!!
Quit nitpicking

Isn't this one place we can type without worrying about doing something ridiculous like making a typo or a spelling error????  I sometimes get more anxiety about posting on here because everyone nitpicks it to death with the spelling and grammar I about hyperventilate.   Most of these messages are typed out so fast and in between files, that it is how it is.  Give people a break and remember people in glass houses should not throw stones.    Have a good day. Bet it makes you feel superior to be the first one that posted and pick apart her message.

By the way I have only used Stedmans and love it.

You know what will happen if we all quit
There will have to be money coming from somewhere to replace the tax revenue lost if all of us wicked smokers just up and quit (or died, whichever!). They already decided we could do without the transfats and took those away from our McFrys; Salmonella risk caused many places to get rid of genuine cesar salads because of the raw eggs; and some places have banned pate. They may start slowly hitting the US consumer with a Twinkie tax- $1/pack, $10/carton. Those McFrys, even without the transfat we knew and loved) will have a $0.10 surcharge each (eek, I can't afford to supersize anymore), and I'm afraid that it will take a mortgage if I want to get that Chantilly Lace cake from the bakery.

Fat people and smokers- the last two groups that it's okay to make fun of in this country, and dang if I ain't both!
How come she quit this one? I miss her, too. -nm

My father quit at 65...........sm
after practically a lifetime of heavy smoking. He started when he was just a boy, which was common back in the 1920s. He quit at 65 and lived for 20 years before being diagnosed with lung cancer. Of course, we have no way of knowing how long he had it because he never really had any symptoms until about 6 months prior to his death. His cancer was found on a chest x-ray for pneumonia. It was inoperable as it was behind the heart and could barely be seen over the top of the heart when he had the x-ray.

I thought his death would make me stop smoking, but it hasn't. I have smoked for about 25 years now and I know I should stop but I haven't found the will power yet.
first, quit the guilt
If you have been burned by someone repeatedly, and they still want you around, they have to be open to your verification to gain your trust. He doesn't respect you enough to get help and stick with it, as he has proven repeatedly, so why should he be surprised if you want reassurance of his activities. If he doesn't want to change, then there is nothing you can do to make him. You have to decide if it is really worth hanging on. Is life apart from him really that much worse than with him? I would advise you to see if there is anyone you can talk to who is an expert on addiction and those who live with addicts (you didn't say whether you have a counselor available or maybe a support group). FWIW, I've been there, and I would never give a man as many chances as you have. It is your life. Reclaim it for yourself!

My point is that the e-mail check is not what you should worry about. How his problems affect your life/sanity/sense of self is what you should focus on.

Good luck!
I took it to quit smoking...
and can't say that I noticed any effects whatsoever, except that it did help me quit smoking.
Quit assuming...
You have no idea what you're talking about.
Quit concerning yourself with "normal." sm
What works for one couple is completely irrelevant to what works for another couple.
It only matters what is comfortable between the 2 people in the relationship.
Every single person has a unique preference of what is the right amount for themself, and we're lucky to find someone we're compatible with in that manner. Some idea of "normal" shouldn't be your gauge.
It doesn't matter if my husb and I only do it once a month if that's all we feel like doing. I don't care that anybody is doing it 3 times per day. It's irrelevent to my relationship.
