Does anyone have a good turkey recipe?? SM

Posted By: AzMT on 2006-11-20
In Reply to:

Due to last week's turn of events I'm having turkey day at my house with my husband and kids.  I've never cooked a turkey before.  I have a very large slow cooker/roaster I've never used before and would like to cook it in there.  What kid of spices do you put on it.  I've got the stuffing taken care of, but am not sure what to do with the outside of the turkey.  I'd like it to have some special flavoring if possible.

TIA for the ideas.

need whole baked turkey breast recipe sm

Hi  A few weeks ago I thought I saved a recipe from Shop-rite for a Whole Turkey Breast with sliced oranges on top.  I cannot find it and I cannot find a recipe similar to it online.

Does anyone havve a good recipe for baking a turkey breast that will spice it up instead of just plopping it in the oven.   I am having my daughter's future inlaws for dinner   TIA.

BTW, lots of left over turkey, so turkey croquettes or tetrazini tonight!,,,,sm
because of healthy diets we are either going to grow feathers and molt due to the poultry, OR fish scales from all the fish...think feathers are prettier and softer, myself!
good recipe
This is exactly how I make it except I cut up some celery to put in also. .
Another good corn recipe

1 15-16 can Mexicorn

1 small package yellow rice

6-8 oz cheddar cheese

1 can cream of chicken soup

Cook rice according to package directions. Mix with all other ingredients. Pour into small casserole dish and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

very, very tasty

That sounds so good. Thanks for the recipe. NM
Here I've lived in Texas most of my life and never made homemade chili pie. This sounds delicious, and I will definitely write down that recipe! Thanks again for sharing!
I have had this and it is very good! Another toffee recipe...
1 pound of butter, one pound of brown sugar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla and 1 bag of chocolate chips. (nuts if you want).

If you want some sort of nuts, place in bottom of cookie sheet with raised sides before starting.

Heat butter until melted and add brown sugar and vanilla. Heat on stove to hard crack stage--if you do not have a candy thermometer (like me) put cold water in a cup and drip a little in to check and see if it is ready. When it is crunchy, it is done. Pour into cookie sheet and scatter chocolate chips over the top. They will melt and you can spread them like in the recipe above.
have a really good cake recipe
My mom got it when she did weight watchers, but my whole family absolutely loves it, very easy to make
Angel food cake mix, mandarin oranges
bake, let cool
icing is cool whip, 1/2 cup milk & pkg of banana cream instant pudding (or whatever kind you would like, some of my crew likes the white chocolate pudding in the icing).. if you want the exact recipe let me know.. I could sit & eat the whole thing myself.. lol
allrecipes.com is a good recipe site sm
We make roast beef in the crock pot a lot - just cut up whatever veggies you like, put them on the bottom, add the roast beef on top, then you can either put 1 cup of beef bouillon or you can use Lipton's onion soup according to the directions. Or substitute burgundy or another red wine for half the liquid. Yummy!
anyone have a recipe for fondant that tastes good? sm
I love to make cakes decorated with fondant but the store-bought kind doesn't taste too good and the consistency is kind of sticky.  I know some people make their own and would love to know how to make a good fondant that tastes good and works well - shiny would be great!  Anyone know?  Thanks
Would have a really good recipe for pumpkin spice latte?

Anyone with a good rum balls or bourbon balls recipe? Thinking ahead to Christmas
s
turkey
This works in a roaster or oven

Melt about a stick of butter add to taste salt, pepper. Chop celery into one to two inch pieces.
Chop onions into large pieces.

After rinsing the turkey and draining the water out you pour the butter mixture into the bird turning it to coat the whole inside. Then stuff the cavity of the bird with the celery and onions (personally I add some garlic as well).

You then place the bird in your pan and rub the breast skin with softened butter the sprinkling with your own choice of spices.

If you have questions feel free to email. BTW you never ever get a dry bird when you cook it this way and have lots of drippings for dressing/gravy. Hope you have a great Holiday!

Popup on ham?? Seen on turkey.
Have a contest going on here. Someone says she has seen a popup which shows a ham is done and I said have not, seen on turkeys. Anyone know is this true or ?
Turkey should never be "bacon."
That is so wrong...its like having a chicken hot dog!
You can use them in turkey chili for one
thing. DH is the cook, but he does that. After adding chili powder it will still taste like chili, which he puts basil in anyway.

Ground turkey (brown first)

tomato sauce
canned tomatoes
onion
canned red beans
canned black beans
frozen lima beans
Picsweet frozen corn added near end of cooking time.

Add browned ground turkey and all ingredients in a crock pot and cook together, except hold the corn out until near the end for sweetest, freshest zing in your chili. The frozen limas and corn are colorful and fresh-tasting additions, we find.
That little thingy that is at the end of the Turkey?
looks like a fan do yall cook that or cut it off?I saw Martha Stewart cook her's and she left it on
HELP! Turkey Day dilema

We are going to MILs for Turkey Day.  She made a big thing out of doing dinner and everything for her family this year.  My husband just went to her house and comes home to tell me we are going to starve tomorrow.  lol  There are 9 people in the immediate family and she has invited at least 4 other people that we know of.  She is making a small turkey breast, 4 potatoes for mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner rolls and that's it!  Oh, and an apple and cherry pie.  Nothing else.  Any ideas on how I can creatively make food to take without upsetting her.  I am already bringing a pecan pie and pumpkin pie because I was "in the mood."  Any suggestions, ideas?  We are expected to spend the entire day and evening down there.  Already made plans to play cards, games, etc. and make a day out of it when I get off work.

You're welcome! Turkey breasts are often

Second day of quitting cold turkey...

Today is my second day of quitting smoking cold turkey. I have some patches, but that is it. I am determined I will quit this time though, without a doubt.

This morning has been really hard not having a smoke with my coffee. My nerves are just on edge.

Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!!

Quit cold turkey because
admitted to the hospital with asthma exacerbation and put on theophylline. That is probably the worst thing ever, sped me up, no sleeping, sweating and I swore if I could get out of the hospital never again. That was 1998 and not 1 cigarette after then. I hated the theophylline more than I loved the cigarettes. What I thought would be outpatient treatment in the emergency room that day changed into a 2 week stay. I was put on prednisone and gained 26 lbs in 2 weeks, horrible. If a doctor now says prednisone, I said what is my second choice? I am remarried and thank goodness stopped the smoking, this hubby is so much against it. I never, though, call anyone else down on their habit if they smoke because I have been there myself.
Thanks! See, I didn't know you had to rinse the turkey like that! Hopefully, mom sm
will respond and tell me everything I need to know?
Speaking of 5:00. Well, I would be up at that time if I was returning home from dancing or the bar. Wait, in fact, I think I did come home on morning and find her cooking that early! Of course I went to sleep for the rest of the day. Yes, sad indeed.
Go to butterball.com for every turkey thing you need to know.

Why does everyone get up so early to cook a turkey? - sm
the only think I can figure is you must eat it at noon. We would get up around 8, make the stuffing, prepare the bird, stuff it and put it in the oven between 10-11. This would be an 18-21 pound turkey, cook it 20 mins per pound, so we would pull it out about 5, then make the homemade gravy (took a good 30 mins to do that), prepare the mashed potatoes, and eat about 6. In between we have a relaxing day of playing board games, watching football or James Bond movies. All I ever see is, mom got in the middle of the night and put the turkey in the oven before we were even awake......either that was one heck of a big bird or they ate turkey for breakfast or lunch. (or else it came out dry as a rock).
We play also but call it Turkey Leg. It really is fun. nm
!
She said TURKEY BACON which is much lower in sat fat, etc. sm
I did Weight Watchers for years and I'd eat something like this, if you were judiciously using the bacon/cheese.
1. Stuffing cooked in turkey!
2. Sweet potato casserole.
3. Fruit salad.

we usually also have homemade rolls, another vegetable and cranberry sauce, sometimes mashed potatoes with the gravy too...

i love the homemade chunky cranberry sauce, but no one else does...
It is turkey and bacon and tomatoes
between slices of bread with a cheese sauce poured over the top. Different places here use different cheese sauces and they are delicious.
Pour 1-2 cans of 7-Up soda over the turkey sm
after it has cooked for about 1-2 hours and baste as well. I usually use more soda and inject it into the turkey with a turkey injecter as well as basting it. Then, I use the drippings with the soda and make it into a gravy. It's sweet and gives the BEST flavor I have ever tasted. My mother-in-law told me years ago to do that and I have been doing it ever since.
I quit cold turkey 10 years ago, YOU CAN DO IT!! nm

I won a Thanksgiving turkey giveaway and got to be on the news. sm
they filmed me picking it up, etc. won it on website entries where we had to find the turkey everyday for like 2 weeks and then they drew names.
History Channel and a turkey sandwich!

Every now and again I get WICKED insomnia myself...definitely stress related.  It totally sucks too, I know what you're goin' through.  Throws everything outta whack.

Tylenol PM works really well for me...just one tablet and I'm out for a minimum of 9 hours.  Wine will make me sleepy but really just puts me out for a 2-3 hour nap.  Otherwise, just my daily chores and typin' work is enough to make me want to be in bed by 7 and not get up until the alarm goes off at 5.

"They" say to set a schedule and try to stick to it.  No naps during the day, and the bedroom is only for sleeping and, er, well no tv and no food anyway ;-)  I also use a white-noise machine (actually just a fan that I affectionatly call "noisy fan") and have one of those Plug-Ins in a relaxing scent (lilac).

Being anal retentive, I find I can fall asleep easiest knowing that all the house stuff is done (dishes, laundry, coffee maker prepped, etc) and when I get up everything is clean and ready for the next day.

Good luck with it all...have the hot flashes hit yet?

Bacon, lettuce, tomatoe, turkey...
Basically a big old sandwich. mmmm

Quit cold turkey Thanksgiving day 1989
but was hospitalized and put on Theophylline. Now some might like this medicine, acted like speed and I was up for 2 days and 2 nights, sweating, hair sweaty, bed wet. I hated this and said dear Lord please let me get home and never smoke another cigarette and did not. The cure I hated more than I loved the cigarettes.
A shot of something might help, blackberry brandy, etc. Or that old tryptophan standby, a turkey

Strangest things? hmmm. Vintage Turkey Basters
Yup, sounds weird I know. It started with one of my grandmothers from the 1940s or 50's. They are glass with the rubber bulb on the end, but the reason why I like them is because of the interesting packaging tube they come in.. Vintage ads PYREX, etc. Usually with a picture of a big Juicy Turkey, etc. I like the coloring too, kind of primary colors but sort of faded with age. Got three of them right now displayed on top of my kitchen cabinets, along with a BUNCH of roosters (way too many), also collect antique crocks.
I also have about 50 Vernon Kilnz (sp?) plates, the kind with scenes from different states, etc. They sort of tell a story about each place. Once had an idea I would do a bed and breakfast someday and use them, so they just sit in the cupboard, all lonely, etc. Yup, if I see any of these things at the flea market or antique shops, I pick'em up, it's like a compulsion or something... just can't help myself.
Looking for turkey day suggestions for fussy kids who hate everything but brownies!
Everything else is greeted with - "yuck" only the grownups eat anything. Posted below what the grownups like. Now if I could get the kids to eat!

Recipe

I love this and you can use a variety of types of yogurts/berries.

Frozen Yogurt

An 8-ounce container of yogurt (I uses Dannon Light)

An 8-ounce container of cool whip (Lite or Low-Fat)

A package of berries (no sugar added).

Mix all together and freeze in a pie plate or cake pan. I mostly use strawberries and strawberry yogurt, and now they even have strawberry cool whip, but not lite or fat-free.

For other company, I sometimes add in some Splenda to sweeten the berries, or put in a graham cracker crust.

You could also make sugar free chocolate pudding, and mix in cool whip.  Stir together and put in parfait cups with a shot of Reddi Whip on top.  This is always a fun treat.

Sorry it is late in coming but, hopefully, you can use in the future as well.

SIL's recipe....
It sounds like your SIL is just the ticket!!!!

I've seen other recipes that are quite similar, and people have raved no end. But, in these recipes the meat cooks for a much, much, much shorter length of time.

I'm sure they're just as wonderful as the cooks and their dinner guests swear, but I've been rather stuck and quite stubborn on "my" recipe.

So, tell your SIL: Help!...Dinner is this weekend and my co-host and I were hoping to go shopping today, tomorrow at the verylatest.

Why I'm stuck on this one, I don't know, but Lord how I remember that taste, that smell!

Thanks so much!

Try going to allrecipes.com and see if you can find one there for that! Do you want hamburger beef or real like beefsteak? Just buy some refried beans in a can, some tortillas, fry up some burger and add some burrito seasoning or salsa and wrap them up! Add a bit of sour cream and black olives, the works on top..oh I'm getting hungry now!
Bonappetite!

Anyone have a good easy recipe for cornbread dressing?  My mom has always made it, but I 'm making everything this year and want to use something other than hers to surprise her!
My BBQ recipe...sm

I brown 1 lb hamburger with a couple of tablespoons of green pepper and onion. Then add 3/4 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon mustard, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tablespoons vinegar, and 3 drops of liquid smoke. Simmer covered for about 20 minutes on low. You can add a little water if it gets too thick. If you don't like it to be sweet, cut down on the brown sugar. Sometimes I use left over roast instead of the hamburger.

Another recipe
I use 1 small can of tomatoes, whole or chopped but without seasoning, 1/2 green bell pepper, 1/4 onion, 2 cloves of garlic (or powder in a pinch), 1 packet of salsa seasoning mix from the grocery store (I haven't found one that I don't like), and if I have it I add a little lime juice (about 1 tablespoon of juice) and a tablespoon of dried cilantro. Add hot sauce or jalepenos if you like. You can chop it as chunky or smooth as you like using food processor or blender. We like it fairly smooth.

I keep the chopped onions and bell peppers in the freezer so I always have them and the seasoning mixes go on sale a couple times a year at the grocery store (3/$1) and I stock up on those. This is always what I am asked to bring to parties and gatherings. For some reason even kids who don't like salsa like it - haven't found a kid yet who doesn't like it. It's great because I can keep everything on hand and it takes about 5 minutes to make.
