You have all made me feel much better, thank you.  I certainly hope it is just his hearing, although it is random when he responds to his name.  I can shout it from across the room and he would still ignore me, but sometimes I only need to whisper it within hearing distance and he looks right at me with his oh so cute smile.  I am thinking another reason for his delay in development may be the fact that he's a boy, an only child, and he doesn't go to daycare or have any kids his age in the area.

My mother only sees him for a few hours every other week or longer, but she is so convinced.  Today we went to visit and the whole time she was constantly testing him, and it seemed that everything he does at home or even out in public for us he wouldn't do for grandma while she was testing.  I'm thinking maybe he isn't comfortable around or just doesn't like her.

Are autistic children selective to who they respond to, or do they pretty much ignore everybody even their parents?  Also, is this behavior sporadic or is it pretty much constant?

Once again, thank you!  I am much more relieved.
