She is my new hero. sm
Natalie on Winehouse as recorded to People Magazone: "On the seriousness of Winehouse's troubles, Cole – who over the years has battled her own substance-abuse problems, successfully – observes, "I mean, she could die. This isn't something that's cute and fun just to throw around in the press. The girl really has a problem, and I think for those of us who have been in the business long enough, we know the sacrifice it takes. This is about discipline and hard work, and you don't get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded."

My hero's
1. The military - They volunteer to risk their lives knowing they will be deployed to dangerous regions so that we can be free (although I am prior military I have never considered myself to be a hero back then, but then again we weren't fighting the same enemies. Back then Russia was our biggest enemy - nothing compared to what soldiers go through now).

2. Police & fireman. They too risk their lives everyday for us.

It sure is hard to find honest, trustworthy and honorable people now. Not everyone in the professions I listed above have those qualities you mention, but out of any profession I would say them. Teachers are another profession I would look up to. I don't consider them hero's, but I do find most of them to be honest and trustworthy.

A dog came out of nowhere and stopped a knife-wielding robber from accosting a mother and her young son on Monday afternoon. (Pet Pulse Illustration by Tim Mattson)
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel."

The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon.

The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements.

Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled.

"I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse.

"I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life."

The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend.

"You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel."

After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene.

The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel."

Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament.

"It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners.

For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most.

"I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News.

For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot.

The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake.

"It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week."

Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired.

According to Dave Ramsey, my hero...sm
He says if you have cards you have paid off or no longer use, you need to call and write the credit card company and let them know that you want the account closed. And that you need to keep checking with those institutions to make sure they have actually done what you asked them to do. IMO, I would do the same thing..cancel them completely and then cut them up to boot. Hope this helps.
We are also hooked on guitar hero
and my "closet" game is Webkinz!!
oh my God - you're my hero Xanax .
Way to go
That guy, the dog's owner, was Marcus Luttrell, a war hero
author of Lone Survivor.  He was the lone survivor of his Navy Seal team on a mission in Afghanistan.  This dog was given to him during his rehabilitation to help with recovery when he came home.  It just makes me sick!

My feelings; people shacking up together for years and years
and then all of a sudden deciding to get married don't need a thing, obviously. A shower should not even be given. I lived with my now husband a while (nowadays who doesn't!) before we married and I also had been married before years ago but he was not....so of course HIS mom wanted a shower. I told her absolutely not unless it was just the immediate family, his mom, sisters, etc, more like a celebration/get together. And so that's what we did. Showers are tacky, period. Unless it's a couple of young kids getting married straight out of the house and that doesn't happen much anymore.
Been with a man 13 years older, now with a man 4 years younger.
Younger is better, at least in my case ;)
Sorry, meant 75 cents. Still, that was years and years ago.

I studied to be a scopist years and years ago
Back in the early 1990s I took a course called Note reader Scopist. They read court reporter notes (those long skinny papers that looks like a cash receipt) and types them into documents. I had found the course through something called At Home Professions but just didn't finish it because it was too expensive for me. But I am familiar with them and even found my book from the first course I took. Looking back I think it would have been a blast if I had kept up with it.

It is definitely legitimate. A lot has changed since the early 90s, so I'm not too familiar with the industry now. I do remember what was really weird was it didn't take a lot for me to learn it. For instance I could look at a line of court notes and see something that looked like: NV p srn - and I seemed to know exactly what it said. Just weird. My DH used to say that I understood it because I was an alien and my ship crashed in Roswell. HA HA HA Anyway...that's what I know about it. But if you Google note reader scopist or at home professions i'm sure you could probably find a lot of info.
I have been vegetarian on/off for 35 years, was vegan for about 5 years sm
not that hard. Right now, I am having so many issues with food allergies and celiac disease, having to give up nightshade veggies...nothing left to eat. I am eating some meat now, but not when the gastroparesis sets in!

Being vegan is not hard...unless you are a celiac. This is how I figured out the celiac part because so many of the meat analogs and vegan packaged foods use gluten for the protein and I got really sick from it. I gave up all the premade things and the whole grains with gluten and I was fine.

There is vegan and then there is VE-GAN. By definition, vegans don't wear, use or consume anything that is derived of animals...no leather shoes, most shampoos and toothpastes are off the list, as are deodorants. No wool or silk. Anything with soap usually has animal byproducts. It is very involved and rather difficult to do.

Giving up meat, eggs and dairy is no big deal, except for cheese. You hear that ad about "comfort proteins" in a baby formula and there is such a thing. Mother's milk, be it human, cow, goat, whatever...contains a chemical that triggers the release of endorphins in the brain so that feeding feels good in more ways than one. The purpose of this is ensure that the nursed young want to nurse and thrive. Human milk has a lot of these, so does cow's milk and cow juice triggers the same reaction in the adult human brain. Cheese is concentrated milk and therefore these chemicals are also concentrated. As a result, cheese is an addictive substance. This is the hardest thing to give up when going vegan. Vegan cheese substitutes are nasty and they don't melt. If a dairy-free cheese melts, it contains casein, an animal protein and not vegan.
I studied this years and years and years ago
Most definitely is legitimate. In the late 1980s I studied to be a note reader scopist through a group called At Home Professions. I loved it, but unfortunately could not continue due to no funds. It was reading the court reporters notes which looked like a grocery receipt with a bunch of letters scattered on it. The weird thing was I found it extremely easy. For instance I would see a line that looked like: av e cr, and for some reason I would know what it said. My DH told me that's because I'm an alien and my ship landed in Roswell. HA HA. Well I know that a lot has changed, after all it's been over 20 years since I took the first course and know a lot of it is computerized now, but it is most definitely legitimate and I've heard people like to do it. I think I remember one of the courses was in medical terminology and another course was in legal terminology. Should be able to find a lot of it on google, or maybe go to your local college if they offer it and talk to an instructor.
This has happened for years and years, where have you been?
Frank Sinatra, Elvis, the Beatles, and on and on. This person is acting very normal like the age she is. You would have to have been under a rock to think differently, like this was an abnormal behavior....
Lost my mom 23 years ago and dad 18 years ago.
My son was not even 1 when my mom died....she was only 50.  My dad died at age 59.  So even though I feel your pain....I would have been very grateful to have them into their 80's.  I guess we take what we get and be thankful.  Sometimes it is hard though.
I was married for 13 years and 2 years
after my divorce I met the most incredible man. He was also divorced, we both have 2 kids, and though we are not married, we have been together for 9 years. They are still out there, you may have to go through a few marginal ones before you find him, but they are out there and available.
Was your kid almost THREE years old?

I am and have been for 3-1/2 years....sm
feel free to e-mail me any questions you may have and I'll answer the best I can.  For me, foster parenting has been a very rewarding experience.

I had it done 5 years ago.
The good: Surgery went well. Lost from 420 pounds down to 175.

The bad: Became depressed, lost my hair, damaged a kidney, and eventually gained the weight back. Weight 350 pounds now.

If you can't change your habits now, you probably won't change it then either.

Only 5% of those who lose weight (even with surgery) keep it off.

DH had one about 5 years ago....
It was a breeze for him, and only a $10 copay! He tried to be macho though and lift something pretty heavy 2 days later, ended up home for about 4 days and pretty sore! All in all everything has been A-OK, he has never had a problem. Didn't slow him down any either, he is still quite the man, if you know what I mean! LOL! Good luck, hope it works out for you.
We do...even after 21 years.

I had an ex-boyfriend that owed them money. Don't know if he was buying it or selling it, and never had heard of them before that, or since then.
WW as of 2 years
I did WW 2 years ago.  They have 2 plans, the core and flex.  I did the flex. It is a point system.  Basically you eat anything you want.   You keep a diary of what you eat and add up the points at the end of the day.   The points was based on the number of calories, amount of fat and fiber I think too. I don't know anything about the core plan.   I did loose weight the 3 weeks I was there.  I went from 196 to 189.  I quit when I got pregnant and never went back.  I would love to go back but I don't think I would get much out of a meeting anymore.  I have a 5 year old that gets bored and a 16 month-old that won't sit still.  I think the cost back then was $11 a week.
Had it when I was 11 years old. sm
I really cannot remember how long I had it before I was diagnosed, seemed to last a looong time though.  Mine started out with one lesion on my torso, which itched but would feel like someone was stabbing me if I touched it... even if my SHIRT touched it!  All of the lesions were very painful, but I remember that one most because it got infected.  Turned a grayish green and oozed.  I still have a large scar from it.  Hope you feel better soon.  It is very painful.
I took it for about 10 years.
I just changed to Effexor. Ten mg is an extremely low dose. To keep migraines and neck/shoulder tightness under control I needed 20. But 50 mg, even though that's still a pretty low dose, could cause daytime drowsiness for me. Other people might take 100 mg, I believe. And at 50 mg there was a little weight gain, also. If you still have trouble, you might try melatonin also. I hope you're feeling better soon.
I don't think 8 years is all that much, I think it would be a lot of fun!

My SIL had it done about 1 1/2 years ago; had no ...
real problems; lost about 125 pounds. I also know a guy who had it about 2 years ago and has lost about 175 pounds. He really has not had problems either. You really have to research the doctor, though, and a lot of people have had problems with it.
BF for 6 years
Also does not make me a crazed lunatic, either - as many of you have alluded to - you would be very surprised if you met me on the street - I look just as normal as any of you - only probably slimmer and with larger natural breasts - and remember large areolas (LOL)
Yes you can. I have done it for 20+ years, my mom
did it for 40+ years.   I usually use parchment paper now, but before I knew about it I always used wax paper.  I have never had a problem with wax on cookies or cakes and there has been no taste difference.  Even some of the pre-modern cooking shows used to tell you to use wax paper on the bottom of your ringed cake pan.
The Wonder Years
I remember them well! Great suggestions above. What a great mom, and what a great son! Enjoy it!

When it comes to digging a bit deeper in those pockets, that's your cue: time for son to get a job and start pitching in!
I had them when I was 45 years old.
I had the Invisaligns, though, and those were great. You could eat anything because you took them out while eating, then brushed your teeth and popped them back in.

They were more expensive than conventional braces, but not by that much...and LOTS less noticeable.
Thanks, but I already get those. Been going for 4 years now.
:-)

The cat is about 3 years old sm
and is considerably overweight. We are working wtih the vet on that. I don't know if he just can't or has ever even tried. Our other cat goes over the fence all the time.
9 YEARS?!!!

Wow, my dear, you are dedicated.

I went through this sort of thing with my husband about 3 years ago.  He was over-reacting, taking everything out on us, constantly talking down to me and screaming at the kids over every single little thing.  After being utterly miserable for at least a year while things went from bad to worse, I kicked him out.

Now, three years later, he is a completely different man.  Losing his entire family (we moved 600 miles away within a week of me telling him to leave) really impacted him, and, honestly, he hit complete rock-bottom - drinking, flaking on the kids for visitation, just being an all-around mess.  And, you know what?  One day he woke up and decided he needed to make a change or kill himself.  So he changed.

We got back together in November, and I'm currently 6 months pregnant with our third child.  There are times when he does slip back into old behavior patterns, but he recognizes it and stops and apologizes.  They need to realize that it IS just a trained reaction, and it is possible to retrain your reactions, but he HAS to want it.  Are you willing to wait for him to make that decision on his own?  Can your mental health and/or your children's mental health handle it?

I know people are too quick to jump into divorce nowadays, but you have to ask yourself if staying is ultimately more harmful to both you and your kids - think about the role model you're being.  I didn't want my kids growing up to think it's okay to walk all over their families because they've had a bad day, so I took action.  I loved him desperately, so it was probably the hardest thing I'd ever done, but, in the long run, everything worked out like it should.

I was 13 years old
and playing Monopoly with my best friend when her mother came into the room sobbing and told us that Elvis was dead. Of course, being insensitive 13 year olds, we thought it was funny she was so upset and just laughed at her.
over the years
Just as clothing sizes have changed, so have shoe sizes over the past years. What was once a size 5 it is now a size 7 - and so on - the what was once a size 14 dress is now near the size of a 10.
She is not even 2 years old
She will grow out of it. Forget trying to reason with her, she is still a baby. I used to keep my kids strapped in a stroller or inside the cart when I went shopping. They are kids, there are no easy solutions, you just get through it.

Also, I agree with poster below about the police comment. Why would you ever want your child to fear the police? Your child is already reluctant to be away from you and now you have exacerbated that fear with the threat of the police taking her away. You might want to rethink that one.
My mom had it many years ago. sm

It was very localized and they gave her a radium implant. That was difficult because she had to remain perfectly still for 24 hours. But it completely got rid of the cancer and she lived for more than 20 years after that (she passed away in 1999).

So it is curable, depending on what kind you have. Of all the cancers of the female reproductive system, cervical is probably the easiest to cure.

Hang in there and good luck!

I took it for about 15 years.
It is an inexpensive older medication. You could take it earlier in the evening, definitely. I never had much trouble sleeping at night while taking it, but it certainly contribute to daytime drowsiness. When you say "low dose," do you mean 10-20 mg? If he has you on 50 mg or more, it's definitely going to kick your butt, though 100 mg is not unusual when it's being used for depression. For pain, 10 or 20 might be enough. But when I got off it, the weight I gained while taking it started coming off quite nicely. It is also constipating.

I'm now on Cymbalta. It is a much more modern medication that is not sedating and is excellent for pain control. Naturally it's much more expensive though. But for me there is a little constipation. That was the one good thing about being off all meds, but I couldn't get by, unfortunately.
Years ago no way out, now
it makes absolutely no sense to kill your spouse, none when you have all the helpp you can muster to get out of a bad situation. Having said that, I do not believe the wife's story for 1 minute, never did. Shot her husband in the back while he slept.
I had it for 7 years - have a lot to say about it (sm)
I can't really give you all the info I would like to right now. I would say first to seeif you can get another opinion and ask the doctor if he/she will consider trying Zovirax - the drug for herpes. I do not know why, but a doctor in Orlando, FL prescribed it to his patients with elevated EBV and it really helped. Back then I was too embarassed to go and ask for more help. My husband got well and I did not. I felt like I was being a wimp or something. But the Zovirax helped tremendously when I was on it. Also make sure she gets LOTS of deep sleep, no matter what you have to do. Ask for sleep medicine if she is not getting deep sleep. She needs to get really good sleep for her body to recover. If you would like to talk more about this you can e-mail me and I will be happy to tell you more things that helped me. Do take it seriously - it can linger on and on and progress to be much worse! Also look up HHV-6 virus.
have had for years, nothing new for me
but was reading where Oprah has a, get this, debilitating thyroid problem and should have operation to remove. I now take Armour as Synthroid I think played part in hair loss. I am well aware of the things going along with it but was a little confused when I read she should have surgery to remove??? The medication has done absolutely nothing for me - I have heard others who gained but immediately upon the thyroid medication lost- oh to be so lucky, no depression, take vitamin for fatigue and works about as well as anything. Have had problem since the 80s.
Had it done about 3 years ago.
Knew at the time that I would still have periods secondary to having a very large uterus, periods much lighter though. Doc recommended either hyst or ablation, but could not take the time off for the hyst, so tried the ablation. As far as the procedure, it was relatively easy, some pain/cramps that afternoon/evening, took a couple of Vicodin and went to bed. Back to work typing the next day at 5:00 a.m. Worked at OB/GYN and do know some women that have stopped periods completely, so maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones.
If he has been doing this for years then ...
she has allowed him to do it.  But is this a reason to "get out"  -- think about this before you jump.   Go to counseling, etc.  But you have allowed him to do this for "years" and so he just continues to do it.  But get some help and talk to someone so if you do "get out" you have had counseling on how to proceed with that.   I do not think it is right but again, you have to get some help before you suddenly "get out."   You need to reallyp pursue every avenue possible especially with children.  I am much happier out of my marriage but again I pursued every avenue before taking that step.  Again, it is a habit with him as you have allowed him to do this.  The first time that you do not go on one of these "planned trips" with him or plan something for the both of you -- I am sure he will get the message.    My two cents worth.
He is 33 years old
He never said it while being "brought up." He said it after he had to work like a dog after her husband died and she expected him to maintain her home, yard, etc. He was an adult, never disrespected her then. I think given the circumstances, he has every right now to say what he thinks. She was an evil person. Not all grandmas are sweet. I totally resent the "lack of upbringing" comment. I happened to be a stay at home mom by choice, did all activities with and for my children and do not reget it for a moment. Nothing makes me happier than to hear someone complement either of my sons on their manners, professionalism, etc. Why are you so rude?
This was several years ago, in the 80s
My mother and her husband came from out of town and brought all the fixings with them. I ran to the store to get something and the car broke down- now mind you I could have walked back home and would have if I had known how furious my mother had become. She had my children, around 10 and 15 there with her and I think she thought I went to meet a guy I was dating. Not so but she was ticked and left as soon as I got back home, just ruined the day. Had I known how angry she would be, I would have walked the 15 blocks or so back home.
When I was 16, about 15 years ago

My curfew on school nights was 10.  Weekends, it was 12.  I did work, however, on school nights and weekends at McD's.  Working or not, I had to tell my mom where I was going, who with, and when I would be home.  I didn't have a car until after high school, so that did make it easier to keep track of me, I guess.

Personally, if I wasn't in bed by 11 pm on school nights, my butt was dragging the next day.  I think for your daughter's academic sake, 10 pm is late enough to be out on a school night.  You might want to reconsider the weekend 11 curfew or at least lighten up when needed (for late movies, dances after the football games, etc.)  Otherwise, I think you're pretty reasonable (but she probably doesn't).
