The world you're teaching them to live and survive in

seems to be a very cold, harsh one. I wonder if you're as hard on yourself when you make a mistake and "forget" something.

No kidding. Some of these people sound like they live in a third world country.
I honestly can barely believe some of the stuff you people are posting.  If you are struggling that much you should find a new job.
The scariest part is realizing how many truly dumb people live among us in this world....
They are up to 12,000 or more; so people are giving! I'm now trying to come up with one myself. hehe
Honey, you're not here by accident, the world did not just "happen"!...

without him. If he can get a cheap enough place it might be cheaper than commuting, and if work would/could help pay for it to that would be great. My DH travels a lot, though it is mostly day driving, his daily drive to work is a min. of 1 hour. When he has to go to the same place for a few days that is 2 hours away, he will sometimes stay 1 night to give himself a break (company pays). He gets a very sore back from all the driving and his left leg bothers him a lot too from whatever position he puts it in in the car. Our first two years of marriage I only saw him on the weekends as he was 2.5 hours away at work (we later moved there); I had no problem with it and still don't. I'd rather have him stay and be alive (accidents happen), then drive home just so he can be here and help me with the kids, etc. Yeah, it gets a bit hectic when he is out of town but I can handle it and so can you.

Since hubby is lacking in consideration, empathy and manners towards his wife, he needs to be taught via "do as you wish to be done by".  It is too easy for him to discount her feelings until HE feels the same way, then he'll be able to relate and maybe some house rules can be set as to property.  Without any understanding of how shocked and hurt his wife feels, he'll just continue to play the nice guy to outsiders with her stuff and discount how it might hurt her.  And that is also damaging to the marriage, right?

I am teaching an adult class sm
but will use this same lesson when we start back with our weekly youth meetings in the fall. I got the idea for this lesson from Fannie Flagg's book Can't Wait to Get to Heaven. The book is obviously fiction but has a "quirky" (most all the characters in the book are quirky-think Mayberry) person's take on heaven when she dies for just a short time and visits heaven. The book is a wonderfully funny read (just a few swear words but it is very clean). I have read all of her books and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Thank you for responding.
Agree most don't abstain and teaching that only - sm
as a lot of schools do is very narrow-minded and totally unrealistic. I remember in 7th grade health class our teacher teaching us about different forms of birth control. They had it all laid out (no pun intended) on a board with an example of each method so we could actually see a condom, diaphragm, pill, iud, etc. No idea what they do there now, this was back in 77/78--I hope they are not burying their head in the sand and saying, "don't do it", and leaving it at that. Kids need to know that if they "do it" how to prevent becoming fathers/mothers at age 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, etc. Lots of peer pressure and some just have sex because their friends were. My friends were at 14 and generally had unprotected sex, one got pregnant at 15 but miscarried; I waited until I was almost 18 and after I graduated (the boys had big mouths and I did not want a reputation as a sleaze, which is what would have happened where I went to school). When mine start having sex I will put them on BCPs and hope they use condoms too (I will also tell them about my 2 best friends with herpes); and I hope they wait until they are at least 17 and ready for it and the responsibility of being sexually active. Guess I will find out in a few years. --as for the beginning of time, yes, the past is riddled with sex, just look at all the famous paintings, and stories of lovers, etc in England and France in royalty, etc. Goes back quite a ways
No, it is an inferance and any teaching of religion -sm
should be done by the parents. I had my kids in private school up until 2 years ago, took them out for several reasons, one being that many of the teachers were teaching about God and making them pray before every meal (snack and lunch). I was paying $12K a year for my kids not to be in a church school, as this was not a religious school (or at least not supposed to be). I could have sent them to many, many cheaper schools in the area but they were all church affiliated. Some of us don't want our kids to be taught by others. I explain all the different religions to my kids, but don't want some outsider to teach their beliefs to my child. It is not their business to teach religion, if they want to do that then become a minister and run a church.

Anyone have tips on teaching ESL child to read? (sm)
I have been volunteering at my children's school once a week helping some of the children in my daughter's 2nd grade class practice reading.  The children having the greatest problems are the English Second Language children and I have been working more with them, but one child in particular needs help and the teacher and I have decided that I should dedicate more time to him.  In his home, his parents speak Spanish (he tells me) and he has two younger siblings. He is a very sweet, very popular child at school.  The problem is he doesn't even recognize all the letters in the alphabet yet, even though he has been through kindergarten and first grade (how has he passed?).  Trying to teach him the sounds that correspond to the alphabet has also been difficult, because he does not know the names of common objects/animals used to teach children alphabet sounds.  For example, we have been making an alphabet book, cutting pictures out of magazines and gluing them to the page with the corresponding letter at the top of the page.  He calls all large animals "elephant" and cannot remember from one week to the next that the "D" animal on his page is a "dinosaur" and not an elephant.  He confuses letters like "e" with "n" when he is writing the name of the animal (with me dictating the spelling to him).  I want to help this child so badly, but I dont' know where to begin.

Need tips on teaching husband to be frugal..sm

Here is the situation...for quite some time I have been trying to be more frugal and really watch my spending and our money.  It seems my husband is doing the total opposite.  I asked him while at the store to get some fabric softener for the laundry.  He gets an $8.00 bottle and I know this store has Downy for $4.99.  To some people $3.00 may not seem like much, but over time it does add up.  We do not have the extra money that we used to and he thinks nothing of spending constantly.  I have said things to him and he does better for a little while, but then it gets out of control.  I had to convince him that he had to get a part-time job because we were sinking fast as he changed jobs and took and major pay cut.

He even asked me today after stating he wanted to go get something from the store why are we broke?  I said we are not totally broke, but we do not have the extra money to splurge either.  I go days without spending money.  Yes I work at home, but I do have to spend money on gas now because our oldest daughter started school this year.  Her lunch is $1.75 a day, but most days she wants to take her lunch box.  I am getting so frustrated with him.  I work two jobs myself as well as take care of the home and our kids (2).  I go to the grocery store and buy plenty of food (breakfast and lunch for him to take to work) and try to make sure that we are not going to the store just because, you end up spending way more money that way.  On the days he has to go to his part-time job he comes home before going to the part-time job.  I do not even see the real reason for coming home before going to the part-time job.  He is only home for 15-30 minutes before going to the part-time job.  The reason I think it is crazy for him to come home before going to his part-time job is the fact that it is 13 miles out of the way.  He is too old to break and too lazy to make the effort to change.  He is more about convenience.

Some times I think if we were to split he really would not survive.  I handle all the money and frankly after 14 years I have come to the conclusion he has no money sense.  He says I nickle and dime him to death, but money in his pocket is money definitely spent.  He has to spend it or die and then looks pitiful when he is broke.  But guess what, I'm to the point where I do not even care when he does not have money because he should be more sensible.  Just as long as he has money for gas to go to work, forget carrying around money.  I feel like sometimes I am having to lie about money simply because if he knows it is there he finds a reason to spend it.  I told him he will never have anything because he just cannot learn to do without.

I guess I am finished fuming for now.

BTW, there really is more to it than an $8.00 bottle of fabric softener, but over time it just builds....look for a bargain at least sometimes.

But this is not a school-wide accepted teaching practice, it is individual (nm)

Our public school wasn't teaching phonics so we've moved....sm
our daughter to a private school that does. Before moving her she was barely able to read because the public schools were teaching them to "read" by looking at pictures and if they knew what the picture was they would know what the word was. For the life of me I don't understand how that's supposed to teach a child to read and I told the school board that in life you don't always have pictures for everything! Our daughter's reading improved immensely once we moved her to private school and she can read anything - without pictures. :o)
I do live in Arkansas - my parents live up in Branson so I'm in Missouri quite often!

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm

I have a dilemma.  I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about.  At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food.  This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed.  I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him.  Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him.  Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would  never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously).  I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety.  I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care.  At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment.  Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold?  I know there are lots of animal lovers out there.  What does everyone think??

I'm a live-and-let-live person but had to draw the line

after I found HUGE holes in the walkway between my house and barn.  I thought they were just little mice stealing grain, but then I spotted one and it was a HONKIN RAT!  My poor olderly cat was out there with me at the time and saw it, and he hissed at it and ran away!

I asked for advice on what to do at a local agricultural board, because I have other animals and didn't want to use poison and conventional traps weren't working.  They advised putting a large pale of water out with some seeds floating in it, figuring the rats would go for the seeds and end up drowning.  That was a no-go because the water just froze up solid.  I wound up reluctantly going with Decon because I just can't have my house destroyed.  I haven't had seen any more rats or evidence of them stealing grain, so I'm guessing they have died.  The guy at the grain store promised me the rats would not die in the building and stink the joint up, rather they would crawl off and die outside.  I don't know if I believe that, as it is still winter here and decomposition would be holding off until it warms up.  We'll see, but at least the destruction has been halted.

Good luck and I too say have no mercy, because you just don't need them destroying hour house or causing a spark chewing wires and burnin' the place down.  It is war!

  (How un-PC is this emoticon?!)

Make them live outside? This is so funny! Ours live outside, where they WANT to be. sm
Not all dogs want to be in "indoor" dogs, mind you. They have plenty of space to run around and play, fenced, and if they are brought in during bad weather they whine at the back door to go back out! So before you comment on outside dogs, you really need to get your facts straight. Seriously. Not all dogs are made or want to be inside all of the time.
You're not 'low-class', you're FUNNY, & a good writer!

They have excellent swimming (not the pools) but man-made beaches there and you can get hopper pass and go to those beaches just like you can visit Tomorrow Land, MGM or whatever. You apparently don’t know about the other places available to customers.
It probably comes from anywhere in the world, but - sm
I hear that a LOT of it comes from S. Africa, Philippines, Singapore, etc. Could be coming from next-door, too. You just never know. It's so frustrating because even though I have a 'Report Spam' feature on my e-mail, and I report & then delete these several times a day, they keep reappearing. All they have to do is slightly change the spelling or the word-arrangement, and it's back again. The latest ones I'm getting are about 'Replica' watches and 'Rolex' watches. The only watch I have, I never wear, and I didn't buy it online or with a credit card, I paid $10 cash for it at Wal-Mart.

Anyway, I think they're looking for more than just 'sales' - I never open those up, but fear that even moving them from my bulk mail folder to my incoming mail folder to report them as Spam is somehow registering my e-mail addressing with someone, somewhere. Haha -- Maybe we should all flood those addresses with Spam e-mails offering to sell them 'beach-front' property in Kansas!
;D
Why in the world would you ever think
others might think these protesters were Christians? I think most humans have the intelligence to tell the difference between 1 or the other. I am sure most all know her name, Eve as this was a story not just in North Carolina but nationwise and probably global as well.
it's a mad mad world
Well going from a very very nice pay check to $0 is very very hard. In all fairness to him the contract he worked on ended. We were living in an area at that time that was in a depression. So we moved out of the area (after one to two years of being unemployed), I got work he didn't, we moved again I got work again and he didn't, two more times we moved to areas where I could get work and he couldn't. He wants to get work but everytime he applies for something they tell him he's over qualified. We live in a very small town (under 10K people) and what he has his experience in we would have to move to the nearest town which is about a 4 hour drive to get the type of work he's done in the past. Which means that whatever he would make would be paid out in higher rent, gas, etc, etc. (not to include the cost of 3 large (24-foot) moving trucks to move all our stuff). So, we've just got to put our "noggins" together to try and figure something out. But I am getting tired of talking every 3 or 4 hours about it and the changing of his mind with I'm going to do this, then that, then this, then back to that again, then something new, then that again. What's that quote from the movie - "I'm mad as he!! and I'm not going to take it anymore". HA HA
What's up with the world anyway?
I think it is sad and disgusting that creatures eat each other ... what kind of a plan is that?!!?
welcome to my world

I am a news junkie.  I hope I don't tread on the political aura because that is not my intention.  I've been watching CNN regarding how one can cut back to survive in this ecomony.  Every tip is MY LIFE for the last 10, 20 or more years!!  So what does one do who HAS been living a frugal lifestyle and finds themselves STILL having to cut back?

As a disclaimer, I am okay, as I have been living somewhat frugally, and have (for now anyhow) a good job.  I just worry about those who have lived as I have and then find themselves in a fix, with nothing else to shut off...

Mad World, etc

For some reason Adam's performance was not aired when I watched AI Tuesday night, unless I blinked and missed it somehow! I can't say I have liked every one of his performances, but he is ALWAYS memorable. He is the son of one of my high school classmates and I do hope he wins.  Does anyone know of a link I can go to watch it?

As far as the new judge, Kara?, I much prefer her over Paula Abdul any day.  At least she is coherent when she gives advice, etc to the contestants.

What in the world?

Sorry CrankyBeach,

This has nothing to do with what was posted, but what in the world is that in your picture????

Why in the world would you do something like that
I cannot understand people who feel they need to do something like this. That child and her mother's personal business is no business of anyone else and certainly not the governments. If the mother can find an alternative health care (which she is in the process of doing), she is more than capable of taking care of her own child and trying to get the help her child needs so he can live and be cured. Not taking him the route that he will eventually die from. Why would anyone stick their nose where it doesn't belong and aid in the quick and horrible and painful death of the child.

I'm not mad at you, I'm trying to understand why anyone would do something this cruel to somebody else.

The mother is trying to save her child's life and the govt is trying to force him into taking a drug that will certainly meet with the end result of death, and months and months of horrible horrible pain and side effects. Until you live with someone and watch them go through the horrible death that chemo brings it's hard to fathom what it does to someone. It not only destroys their immune system and they throw up, cannot eat, go through depression, and basically beg for death. There is nothing worse than when I was hugging my mom while she was sitting on the toilet constipated for days, crying and screaming in pain and wishing to die. I have never been through a more depressing situation and her telling me how humiliating for her and I should go home and not see her this way. Her hair fell out and she said she felt ugly and worthless (she has always been a beautiful woman no matter what). It's heart-wrenching to sit here and relieve those memories. Then to hear that someone would turn someone in for them to undergo the same fate as what my mom and 3 other relatives of mine went through. I just don't understand it.
Where do you live?? I live in Atlanta
and have been to the symphony here and definitely no hats- you can never go wrong with black dress/slacks. I like to dress a little more for this but the rules are definitely not prim and proper here.
I come from the old school, but live and let live - sm
Well, I tried "cohabitating" with a boyfriend when I was 22. We dated for a year, and 3 weeks after we moved in together, he went back to his ex-wife. Never again. I've been married 18 years now to the same guy. Guess I lucked out.

I don't think it's right to do in a biblical sense (even felt that way when I moved in with a guy but my young hormones took over my common sense) but it's sad more people aren't married, they choose to just live together without a great commitment. Then again, as my atty (he lives at the end of our street so I see him often when walking the dogs) always says, his father told him it should be $5,000 for a marriage license and free to get divorced.

As far as the children are concerned, well, I think you should be married before you have children but again, live and let live. I just don't like seeing children have to grow up without the other parent if it can be helped.

The NFL network recently interviewed a former NFL player, Warren Sapp. He was asked why we have so many jerks in the NFL like Terrell Owens, Adam Pacman Jones, etc. He said they all shared a common factor - no father or father figure in their lives growing up. He said to look at players who are humble and don't cause trouble - they are the product of a 2 parent household. It's sad to me because it's commonplace now, not the exception to rule, which I think it should be. I graduated high school in 1985 and even back then, a girl in school who got pregnant got sent away "to live with her aunt for a little while". It was a shame to be pregnant and unmarried but it's a sign of the times.

I sometimes wish I could have grown up in the 50s instead of 70s. :-)
1st of all I said this *country* - not world...sm
Secondly, it's not just the Christians, I beg to differ.......there's plenty of other religious groups in the USA - that this effects.....and who have been oppressed for a couple of centuries as I see it.
