You are expecting thanks, or would like thanks, which is to be expected, but if you are sending these notes, cards, etc. anonymously they cannot thank you, can they? If you want some recognition of your good deeds then put your name on the cards next time. As for people not smiling on the street, etc. I generally do not smile at strangers, maybe these people don't know you as well as you think they do, hence they are not friendly on the street. I don't know what to say except to develop some thicker skin and not to expect much from others, good manners seem to have gone by the wayside.
