In Reply to: Do you have an accent? - GabbyChick

I am from South Mississippi, and down here I don't notice it because everyone talks like me. The reason I know I have an accent is because I went to Pennsylvania and New York a couple years ago. I felt like a duck out of water. When my husband or I spoke people just looked at us and I could definitely tell everyone there spoke differently. This is what happened when I first arrived in Pennslyvania and had to go to the restroom: I went in this quik stop, and I go to the counter and ask the guy working where the restroom is, and he looked at me kind of weird and said "What?" I said the restroom. He said oh okay. Then he went on to tell me and I said "What?" He spoke so differently than me and so much faster that I had to think about it for a second. I did my business and went back out to the truck and looked at my husband and said "That guy just looked at me like I came from another planet." I said he couldn't understand me and I couldn't understand him. I was almost afraid to talk up there because I didn't want to draw attention to myself. I don't know maybe the accents are thicker the further down south you go. I don't know but I felt out of place.
