I went through what he is going through, but not because of drugs. It got so bad that I quit eating and had to be hospitalized.

He has either been self-medicating over the years with marijuana because of an anxiety disorder, or he's quitten something stronger.

Either way, he doesn't need to feel worse about himself than he probably already does, so please take him to a doctor and act supportive, even if you don't feel it. This is a HORRIBLE way to feel and I don't wish it on my worst enemy.
