you mention above the large amounts of horses in packing plants. the statistics for equines for slaughter have actually gone down from over 340,000 in 1989 to around 92,000 in 2005. (I got that by Googling it) that includes horses for human consumption (those darn French people again)and otherwise not-fit-for-human-consumption-turned-into-dog food equines.

fact is- money does add another dimension in the relationship between horses and humans. not just in the racing industry but every aspect of the horse industry. Thus, therefore-- ALL (?!?) horses are exploited? Truth is thoroughbreds are bred to run just as some horses are bred for working cattle and some are bred for jumping and dressage and countless other disciplines and they actually enjoy it....some of the rest of us with real life, first hand experience take exception to that thought that our horses are expoited. even though I don't have high powered show horses and mine are strictly backyard horses that my grandchildren and I ride I strongly disagree with the premise that these horses are exploited just because there are people who have the money to improve the breeding. There are countless people like me out there who have don't have tons of money but still like enjoy their horse and some happen to like to compete we don't feel we are exploiting our animals. There are some mighty spectacular horses out there that wouldn't be here had not someone who had tons of money researched pedigree lines and developed them through cross breeding- thanks to money.

I feel myself working up into a powerful argument here so I won't get started BUT.... Its been way too many years since I took a psychology class but I think it was Maslow who basically said that our minds can make any facts fit our preconcieved notions.
