right on!

I think I have everyone beat.  I've got a 1987 Plymouth GranFury (no "d") that I paid a total of $375.00 for about 4 years ago.  I was just starting out in transcription and it was all I could afford (still is).  It's a V8 which eats gas, bit since I work from home that really is not that much of a problem.  Also, if I go somewhere with someone they INSIST on taking THEIR car (I think they either don't trust mine or are too embarrassed to be seen in it) so they pay for the gas despite my offer to help.  I get to feel air conditioning that way, too!

Over the years I've replaced almost everything EXCEPT the seats and the engine which is a 318.  This is a magic number for some reason because whenever I mention it to a man his eyes light up.  Mechanics have told me I am better off with this old clunker than a new car because it is easier to service and -- it has that wonderful 318 engine which they look at so admiringly.

Some parts under the hood are currently held together with Super Glue and they work just fine by the way.  The covering on the roof on the interior of the car is held in place with push pins so it will not flap in the breeze.  It has one hubcap/wheel cover (depending on your generation).  It has also afforded me the opportunity to make the acquaintance of many very nice tow truck drivers as various parts have fallen off, stopped working, or blown up as I drive along.

I don't know how many miles it has on it -- the mechanics presume the odometer has been turned back several times.  Right now it's at close to 300,000-something they are thinking but they still tell me I have a good car that will service me well as long as I do the routine maintenance thing--because of the 318 engine being such a marvel.  I may even get it repainted.  It's supposed to be blue.

My point is, even with all this it has been more cost efficient for me to have this than something I am not embarrassed to drive.  And I never have to worry about someone scratching or denting it on a parking lot--I most likely wouldn't even notice it.  I don't know that I would trust it for a long trip, but for around here it's okay.  Money in the bank means more to me than pride.  When it comes time to sell it (ha ha) I am going to list it as a 318 engine with various other auto parts included.
