don't linger sm
Proofread recommendations in a DS, the Transcriptionist let her fingers linger too long on ca. Came out saying the patient was not allowed to drive her carcinoma for a week. Wish I had a dime for each time I saw the patient was prepared and raped. Gotta laugh or we'd cry.
popcorn is the best because you can still type

You can put a bunch of popcorn in about 3 stacked coffee filters, like a little paper disposable bowl, set it up on the right next to your mouse, and just lean over every once in while and pick a few pieces up with your tongue. Hands free!

I only recommend the coffee filter idea, because there have never been any bowls clean in my house since I started this job.

Coffee filters are also very absorbant, very cheap and come in quite handy in a pinch for those nasty vodka spills on the keyboard in case the cover accidently comes off the used McDonalds cup with the straw that sits to the left of the keyboard.

what works for me? the 97% fat free popcorn

That is a long time for Bell's to linger. Usually, at least in my case, 6 months max.
I took antibiotics and it cleared up in about 6 months. You have some type of nerve irritation and probably the herpes triggered it. Are you taking anything?
Yes, it's microwave popcorn - best invention since the wheel! - nm

Maybe you can get un-burnt-out by 1 or more of these:
Maybe you can get un-burnt-out by 1 or more of these: Read trade journals (AAMT, Advance, Plexus, even nursing or MD journals); read up on the lastest stuff at related websites; watch some of those live ER or reenacted ER TV shows; watch some of those surgery TV programs; if you have cable TV check out health-related programs; be a volunteer if that's your kind of thing & offer to do some transcription for a nonprofit clinic for the poor (helping others is a known cure for burnout); change your work area: wallpaper or paint, or a new desk, a desktop fishtank or fountain, a CD player for some non-distracting music.
Burnt out...what do you do?
What do you do when you just can't take it anymore? I feel so burnt out in this field right now, but Im kind of stuck here at the moment for personal reasons. What has helped you get out of that "rut" when you feel burnt out?
Burnt out

Hi Everyone,

I am not coming here to sound like I'm whining or complaining, but I am just completely burnt out, stressed, and an emotional wreck and need advice because I'm sure we've all been there.  No one understands our jobs.  I'm definitely not trying to say I have it *so bad and worse than anyone*  because I think we all have it exactly the same.  What do you do when you get burnt out like this?  Would it be a good idea to just take a *break* from transcription for a while?

I have been doing this for 3 years and just can't seem to get ahead.  My motivation is there (most of the time) but my line counts just aren't.  Most of the time I am making less than minimum wage.  I struggle through 60 minutes of dictation, only to have a piddly 400 line count after about 8 hours.  My doctors seem to like to spout off partial or wrong company names that people work for (completely irrelevant to the report), activities, job titles, work equipment, street names (of all things), school names (out of state), impossible to find without at least 20-30 minute doctor name searches as much as they can (always mispronouncing or an out-of-state doctor because my accounts are basically on the border between 2 states).  Join the club... I know.   I definitely love transcription and who I work for..but I am just incredibly frustrated at my paychecks along with the amount of time and effort spent on a check amounting to $200 every 2 weeks.  I am always working/at the computer "on call" on my days off...as most of us are.

I do have a daughter at home who has become VERY demanding (she is not the reason I decided on this career; I have a huge interest in the medical field and didn't want to be a nurse or secretary, anything like that).  She is in preschool, but my work has been coming later and later to the point where I have no choice but to do it while she is home.  Talk about adding to my stress.

I actually just let it all out last night.  My eyes are all swollen today from bawling last night.  My husband asked *are you done yet* after me only trying to vent my frustrations to him for like 2 minutes (that just set it all off) - and was fed up with me and told me to *just quit because I don't want to work* that phrase skyrockets my blood pressure.  He doesn't get it.  The transcriptionists work is never done and we never get away from our jobs!!

He is never home due to his job, which he loves and says is a cake walk.  To be honest, that actually makes me jealous and even more irritated.  I just wish he knew for one second what my life was like!  He has a 2 hour commute, gets the GI bill every month, and loves to work overtime and trust me he makes enough for us all to get by smoothly.  Still, EVERYTHING is on me...EVERYTHING...on a constant daily basis.  I have 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 goats, and a daughter to take care of, along with the house, cooking, and all of the chores that go along with it...which I wouldn't trade for the world, don't get me wrong, I just feel like I don't have the time for anything other than my job and my daughter's attitude is really starting to reflect it and all of my family sees it, just not my husband.

What gets me is...he and his parents can and are 100% willing to pay SOMEONE ELSE to take care of my daughter and do MY JOB with her...yet, here I am struggling to do a million things at once and only coming out $100 ahead of preschool.  Would they think about paying me?  Lol, I highly doubt it..and in fact when I brought it up to my husband last night, he laughed in my face and called me crazy.  Well, what is so crazy about it?  I taught her everything she knows!!  Yet his parents will still comment on what a great job preschool is doing for her.  It is the pressure from his parents (who both happen to be school teachers) and my husband would never go against their decisions.  Don't get me wrong, I would never expect/want to be paid, lol...it is just a hypothetical situation.  If it is good for someone else, why can't it be good for anyone else?

I think that was actually the start of my frustration..when he started his new job because he got lazy around the house and with our daughter!  When he gets a day off though, you better believe it's a day off!!!  He does whatever he wants with his buddies or whatever, while I sit at home and deal with the same things when he is working.  When he gets home from work, he has the nerve to ask me *what did you do all day* because my paychecks dont REFLECT the amount of time that I am actually in here working my butt off...and neither does the mess of my house.

Any ideas on what I could tell my husband to help him understand at least partially what I, we all, go through in this field without him basically telling me to shut my mouth because him not listening to me is really getting old.

Burnt out....sm

First of all, you sound like you need a hug, but I couldn't find a smiley for that, so here is a cheers!

Maybe you just need a change of scene? Would it be possible for you to find an MT job outside of your house in a local clinic or hospital for a few hours a week? You might even be able to make more money doing less hours outside of the house.

Husbands can be so irritating sometimes.

Burnt out
Hi,
I would send him a copy of this post you made, maybe seeing it in print will wake him up.
Also I have been transcribing for 20 years and have found HEAVEN with this program. Watch the short video at www.teamresult.com and e-mail me if interested, I will then call you.

Burnt out and under appreciated
I can relate. My income is decreasing, my hours are increasing. My son is making more as a security guard at the local casino. I'm so tired at night I can't do anything. I think we all need vacations, if we could afford one.
lol, usually these people are so burnt out (sm)
they are getting hit from every end. i usually pick up my work and skidaddle out of there. you usually meet the in-house employees eyes and they got their claws out. lol
I feel your burnt pain!
I have been feeling this way for years. Sometimes I think I need straps on my chair to keep me in it! My mind wanders and my focus is not there and sometimes I am just down right mad at myself for sticking with something that makes me so miserable for so long. However, there are other opportunities out there to make money. You can do it!! I have some ideas for you, but you need to e-mail me. Keep an open mind and open eyes and something will come along that may help make you feel better. You may need some aloe-vera for that severe burn, though! I will send some prayers your way..keep your chin up, you can do it.
I am in the same boat. I think I am way past burnt out though.
I need serious help! I can't pull it together to save my own butt right now. Sigh.
I did in the past, got burnt out very quickly. sm
It is very difficult to do. I lasted about 5 years working 16 hour days, and by that time I was exhausted, stressed out, and my financial issues never disappeared.

It really is not worth the money to do that to yourself in my humble opinion.
Over 100. Burnt my bare feet on concrete. Plants are dying.
dd
30 hours divided by four days equals seven-hour days. Most of us have to work pretty much every day
.
Working 6/hour days, 5 days/week I make
$42,000.00, but the work is there to make more if I want to.  I'm in the southeast.
2000 low days, 4000 busy days
Did 43,000 lines last month.   6 doctors.
You can "make a living" if you work 16-hr days, 7 days
and if you rarely buy anything but food and the barest essentials in clothing. My balancing act is so precarious that all it'll take is one of life's little disasters (rent increase, sick pet, major car repair) to pull the rug out from under me. Not a good feeling at all.
550-650 lph on average. Some days more, some days less. It all depends. nm
x
How? By working 12-hr days 7 days/week?
;LKJ
In SEVEN days?

$30 in 7 days?  You've got to be kidding, right?  I could see $30 in 7 hours being bad, but in 7 days?  Either way, it's still not even minimum wage.  Aren't you worth at least twice minimum wage per hour?  Granted, there is always a period of adjustment when starting a new account, but I won't even stick around that long if I can't even make minimum wage.  Wow.  That's all I can say.  I think you know in your heart what you need to do.  You are worth so much more.

I've been frustrated myself because I'm supposed to do so many lines per week.  Monday and Tuesday were no work because the weekend people did it all.  Wednesday was technical problems.  Now I'm scrambling to get my lines in by the end of business today to reach my weekly line quota and get a half decent paycheck.  I was basically on call for them for free for three days.

There's not much of interest to me on the Job Seeker's board either.  Heck, maybe I'll take the next month off work and fool around for the rest of the summer until I can find something else.  I should have backed up paychecks coming in to last until then.  Good luck with your dilemma.

yes, just last few days.
Thought it was my computer - it acts like it can't keep up w/the typing and I'm not THAT fast...;) Now that I know it isn't just me though, I think I'll give them a call tomorrow if it happens again.
I think my MT days are over.....sm

I took a Federal job last year and kept one small, very part-time MT account. I got a 2-step promotion yesterday (lots more money), so I'm going to drop the MT account. This will be my first experience as a supervisor/work group leader. I'll probably still check in here, I actually use a lot of the grammar and software info. I loved MT, but the benefits and job security were a good move for me and my family. Best of luck to all.

Most days I truly like my job very much; however,
today is not one of those days. After listening to dictators on speaker phones, chewing gum, and ESL's, today I don't like my job a whole bunch. Tomorrow will probably be different, though.
I had one of those days too.
Very draining. Hope it gets better for you.
It will still be there in 2 days
when I go on to work. They let it happen constantly. They are just glad someone is dumb enough to do the idiots the cherrypickers skip continuously. The funny part is one does get used to them although they still SUCK.
Unfortunately, I had it for four days...nm
.
I think I will try it a few more days.....
If I just can get it, then I will try another ergonomic style..
I think after two days..
I am getting the hang of it. I still hit a few keys wrong here and there, but I think I will end up loving it too! I have noticed that my hands dont ache at the end of the day and thats a +++!!
Does anybody else ever have days that you just
absolutely depise transcription? Usually I enjoy my job, but today McDonald's, Hardee's, Pizza Hut, cleaning toilets, etc. is looking better.
Ever have one of those days
When you've typed an entire report and don't recollect having done it.  You check it and it's correct.  Frightening.  My mind is elsewhere this morning.  Too much caffeine (shh, don't tell my coffeepot).
Having one of those days 2 days in a row!!!

Have had the same ESL the last 2 days who mumbles incoherently until the end when he suddenly puts the phone near his face and rattles off the last sentence crystal clear before hanging up.  I would love to grab him by the _____ (pick a body part) and ask him very politely to please ennunciate and speak just a little bit louder.

Thank you.  Done venting.  Carry on.

Have you ever had one of those days?
When it seems like your fingers are not cooperating? So far this evening, I have misspelled somewhere close to 6 of every 10 words. thank goodness for spell checkers! I seem to be hitting extra letters every time I turn around!

Some days just go like this.

My 19 yo son can't find his keys and boy, is he upset.  He, dad and I search the house for the keys.  He knows where he put them last night, but they're not there.  I push furniture out, shake all the clothes that he has lying around his room, search and search, along with the others.  Now, 1-1/2 hours later, 1 hour late for work, he finds them.......

in his back pocket behind his wallet.     I'm laughing, of course he's really mad now!

some days
 so where were they????
I tried it only for a few days, it
I started to take Doxepin instead- it was a life saver! It is considered to be a rather "old" drug and you would have to check to see if it is even available in your area. I took it for anxiety & trouble sleeping. Anyway it is a an alternative option to look into should Prozac not agree with you. Good luck.
days gone by

How about shows you miss that are no longer on (excpet maybe reruns)? I miss:

  1. Seinfeld

  2. Ally McBeal

  3. Strong Medicine

  4. The Division

  5. Any Day Now

Days Definitely
I love Days and make sure that I take my lunch break at 1:00 to watch the show. I'm happy to see Patch and Kayla back too. I've been watching for years myself. I just want them to get this Shawn/Belle/Claire mess taken care of. It's been going on long enough. My other addiction is Rob Thomas.
one of those days

I can't concentrate, my head hurts, and I can't hear half of what is being said.

Sorry, I needed to whine for a minute.

Thanks for letting me

Having one of those days...why is it
necessary for these dictators just not to care when dictating.  I am doing a 20+ minute dictation.  So far we are into almost 10 minutes of the dictation and so far I have one paragraph done, literally.  We are still in the HPI.  He has said ummmm who knows how many times and back tracked to rearrange things he already dictated.  I would love for each dictator to type one lousy report of theirs, just one and see what we put up with.  Maybe just maybe then they will shape up a bit and clean up their act, then again why should they care.  Maybe if they got paid for typing their own dictation they might get the point, once they starve, lose their nice boat, house etc.  Sheesh.  Okay done now, feel much better.  Thanks for allowing me to vent.
one of those days

arghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Dictator, weather, kids,

It has all been said before.  And how was your day.

I feel better already

11% if they pay in 3 days -- nm

Three days then said ....

[][]

No - but did get let go after a few days
as service kept changing the way the work was being submitted and apparently I could not keep up well enough! There are just some very weird and very rude people out there - don't question yourself - sounds like they did not give you the tools to work with - the more companies/accounts I work for/with the more different they are - some companies actually believe their way is the RIGHT way and the ONLY way - don't let them get to you!!  You will find a better job real quick and be glad you did!!
I have days like that as well
Today, mind you, I have easy docs so my line count is fairly good. But I know the rest of the week will be terrible, and by Friday I am looking for other jobs. I don't really think there is a better place out there. I mean, this thing with MTSOs is a struggle for me. I work on the weekends too because I constantly am expected to make up my hours if THEY are out of work or if I have an appointment (which I understand). And, no, they are thankless and I feel like I am working in a third-world country in a sweatshop...

I understand your vent and live it every day.
Ever had one of those days when
all you get are sloppy dictators who can not make up their minds on exactly what they want to say. Light editing only, which makes you wonder what would really happened if you followed that rule? Every dictator I have had is new. I have spent more time downloading samples and looking up meds pronounced incorrectly. The horror of it all!!! And I am a newbie, too!!!. Please let this day be over..
One of those days . . .
Yep! Had one of those days today. All bad dictators. The ones that I like the very, very least. They couldn't decide which headings to use ect. My back hurts, my neck hurts and my head feels like it is ready to blow. Need a new job.
Yes, I believe it is 30 days nm
