Buy a Bird Talk USA to read over before deciding

It is an annual issue that discusses all the different species of birds and their quirks and specific needs.  If you do decide on an AG, consider one older than a year or 2 old as they go through a maturity phase during that time and can change personalities or change the object of their affection.  I have a personal preference to Soloman Island Eclectus males.  Like most Indonesian parrots, they prefer not to be touched on the back of the head/neck but with love and tenderness, they can overcome this.  These birds can bond to and love several people at the same time while maintaining the primary bond to their "main human" which an AG may not allow (all birds are individual in this).

Whatever parrot you decide upon, from a parrotlet to a maccaw, treat it as it is a 3 to 4-year-old child.  That is the intelligence and emotional level they function with.  Find out when they reach sexual maturity and be prepared to deal with the sometimes violent mood swings or changes in preference with whom they bond (this is very important especially if you hand feed one).  Rotate the toys every couple of weeks.  Don't be bashful about taking it on walks in the park, to the beach.  Be careful about birds of prey if you let it play on a perch outside.  A varied diet is a must (If it's good for you, it is for them.  If it's bad for you, it's bad for them).  Consider the toxicity of your house plants.  Let them take showers with you.

Okay, I'm addicted to them.  I'll stop now

Hey Irishmom! I think you and I both are deciding on going with sm
Webmedx as I see you had some questions - just like me. So, what have you decided? I haven't yet. Two things I don't like: Timeclock and schedule (as in it sounds like I would have to stick to a schedule strictly), which I do with MQ, and I'm not sure I want that again!

So, did you take the job? Just curious. From one MT to another. Funny you work at FN? I applied to them last week and they are the only co. that never responded. ha.
need help in deciding jobs
Hi out there.  I am looking for some insight on a decision as to what I should do.  I know of a company hiring for IC.  I would probably only have to work 4 hours a day with flexibility and I would stay at my present company part time just to see how the new one would work out.  I have to wait a whole year (or so they say) at my present company if I want to go back to full time.  I know with IC I would be responsible for my own taxes.  Do, I, myself have to pay into medicare?  I'm just wondering if it is worth an IC job part time and having to pay taxes.  I know I would love the flexibility and it would be a little lower than what I was making now at my FT job.  Thanks for listening.  I have the saying "when one door shuts another opens" running through my mind but I'm just wondering what my best options are.
OTC or Rx is not the deciding factor. sm
As the other posters said, the deciding factor on capitalization is whether it is a brand name or a generic. There are prescription meds that are capped (Nexium), and prescription meds that are not capped (esomeprazole). There are OTC meds that are capped (Tylenol) and OTC meds that are not capped (ibuprofen).
Exactly. Still there but 2 jobs lined up deciding on them. No way are they going to cut me any
further and put me through the aggravation I have been put through switching to Amherst. Many MTs have left and more planning on it and MQ does not seem to care so you have to wonder what they are up to.
thanks, i will make it THE deciding factor also.
i'm just going to hang in there. i had some email replies for reassurance also.
Help deciding CD references vs books....sm
I need to purchase new references and need opinions as I am undecided whether to eliminate books completely and go with CDs or not. There is something I really like about leafing through a book but have become more mobile lately with a laptop and carting books is a pain. Also, is a drug reference really necessary with all the drug sites on the internet? I do exclusively trauma and operative reports.
No Experience jobs/Deciding to go 2 school.

Hello everyone.

I am trying to make up my mind on going to a MT training class.I have a few questions that i hope someone can help me with.

1.Is most of the work being sent overseas?

2.Are there any work at home companies that hire new grads,or would I have to work in a hospital...and is(hospital) and option with no experience?

3.If I can find a wah job how much should I plan on saving for equipment?

4.What is normal pay as a newbie.I know that it depends on the company, but what is average?

Thanks for any help that you all can provide.

a bird!
LOL!!
If i had a choice I wouldn't do this guy, but i ALSO know I have it pretty good. No ESL doctors to date for me... but that doesn't ALWAYS mean the English ones are easy!! I have asked him, his partners, and the office manager consistently that he speak LOUDER because I honestly think that's the biggest problem. I have him up full blast and if you put a different doc on at the same level, it blasts my eardrums out! Nothing has changed, but that's why He is the only one to receive blanks in his dictation!! :)
Any pet bird lovers out there?

Thinking about getting a parrot, either Amazon or African Grey.  Anyone have experience with either?  Any pros or cons you can share?

I have had smaller birds in the past, i.e. cockatiels, so have some experience, but never have owned a larger bird.

Bird lover to the max!
I am an obessed bird lover!
Started with one cockatiel 7 years ago, fell in love and gradually got three more. I have 2 Australian Bourkes and 3 parakeets. Advice I can give you is get or subscribe to BirdTalk or Birds USA. I know these magazines are not widely available, but if you can, they are a great resource. The thing you have to keep in mind is the time you will have to spend taking care of a larger bird. That is key. Birds, especially the larger ones, require a lot of interaction and attention. I do a lot of reading about birds because I find them fascinating. Avian behavior studies are really only 20 years old, and what is being discovered is fascinating. They are much more intelligent than was previously thought. They now know that birds actually do understand at some point, they understand context. This explains how emotional they can be. Getting a large bird is a commitmentfor life. Birds feel emotion, and a bird can actually die of a broken heart if left alone too long, become destructive, or develop feather picking. It is a commitment one has to think about before getting a large parrot. Also, you may just surf the web for information. There are lots of websites, none of which I can think of right now! Good luck to you!
Bird rescue, etc. (s/m)
Interesting story about the birds! It sounds like you are doing a great favor to a lot of animals. Yes, actually the Queen Bee friend did request that I give back clothing I didn't want to her, but after the fact. I already had my nose a little bit out of joint by then, so felt that I would just put an end to the problem in its entirety by no longer accepting gifts with strings attached.

It is different with animals, though, and I agree with your request to give birds back to you, since the birds have feelings and have already had unstable lives. I got my cat through a cat rescue, and although he is now MY cat, I signed a paper agreeing to return him if I didn't want him (ha! that'll never happen), or couldn't care for him. That info. is actually on his microchip, as well. If I were to suddenly die or something, I would have the peace of mind in knowing that even if he ended up in the animal shelter, one scan of the chip would let them know the cat was to be returned to rescue, and they would actually have someone drive down to get him. Then he would be safe and well-cared-for until they found someone else who would spoil him as much as I do! ;)

I used to do this doctor that had a bird ...

and all you could hear was that flipping bird sqwaking and, excuse the pun, getting its feathers in a bunch.  That thing was loud and "bossy".  It knew a few words and I would hear it say "Hello, bye bye baby."  Ughhh...  It drove me insane because he would be on bright and early dictating from home his surgery patient H&Ps and all you can hear is that bird.  I think I had nightmares for a while about that thing.  It used to always make me want chicken for dinner.

Thankfully I no longer transcribe for him.

Oops, I forgot the bird flu. nm
x
So you bird lovers-name some of your favorite
When i got home, my parrot would ask me "being a good bird?" (as though since I had been gone, I may have been naughty).

My next favorite was when he got something especially good to eat, he would say "mmm, yum-yum!". We share spaghettis noodles and race either to the middle!
about the same as killing all birds over the bird flu sometimes...
you have to do what you have to do. If there is mad cow disease, everyone kills cows. If there is bird flu, we kill birds. If there is rabies, we kill dogs. Any epidemic in the making has to be stopped before the epidemic starts. Oh, and the West Nile virus, we kill mosquitos. The only thing with the deer ticks, we aren't forced to kill deer, people do that for sport. lol
My friend's bird rang like the phone...
That was so confusing and quite funny. Also, my girlfriend from grade school had a parrot that overheard me say, "I'm going to the bathroom" and when I left the room it said, "Go pee pee, Go pee pee". I missed it, but they had a great laugh!
Hmm, guess I shouldn't have included bird and humans. nm
:=
Same people who properly call the bird African GREY
.
Eewwww... you don't talk like an MT, you talk like mangement. Ick. (n/m)

Oven-roasted chicky bird...with possibly seasoned tators in oven and ? for veggie nm

In 12 years of MT'ing I've never re-read an entire chart. Edit/read as I type. nm

Yes, I read your post, and I just re-read it, and I've copied and pasted for you in case

you've forgotten your own words! Your post above is 100% different "flavor" to it, now all positive and cheery! Your first post was 100% doom and gloom every which way, including "raining on your parade", and "if you want to go forward"...God, sounds like she's talking about jumping into oncoming traffic! Here is your quote:

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer.

****

How can the word "NEVER" in caps be interpreted in any positive way? You took about 8 paragraphs to cover every aspect and completely dash this poor woman's dream.  I'm not blind, I'm not talking about day care at all, I'm talking about the total negativity of your original post! You know exactly what I'm talking about, cause you added some sugar to your second version! And that's much nicer than the first!

Oh I've read that site and continue to read it...sm
I agree...much motivation there. I have tried to quit numerous times in the past and did successfully quit when I was pregnant for the first time many years ago but I have never managed to summon up the strength or resolve to stay quit. Thus the "need" for a financial investment in my efforts. It somehow makes it more motivational to know that I have $$$ invested in this effort over and above the $$$ saved on cigarettes.
Who had time to read?LOL I only get a chance to read This Old House once in a while. (nm)

I didn't read the other posts but just read this
My daughter got pregnant at 17, said she wanted an abortion but BF didn't. I have a wonderful 2-1/2 yo grand daughter that I don't think I could live without...and now, guess what? I don't. I have custody of her. She was dropped off on my door, I got court ordered temporary custody and final custody hearing in a month.

I'm single with no family support. I had just taken a new MT job one month before this happened and they have been wonderful during my adjusting to being a mom again and I hope I can resume a normal schedule by next week.

I'm passing no moral judgments or giving moral advice. The situation is what it is. My prayers are with everyone involved.
Definitely an eye-opening read. Having my teens read it, too. nm

Can someone talk to me?

I'm really depressed and need someone; no religious stuff, though.

At what point should one give up one's children if you feel you aren't giving them  a good life?

I will talk to you.
I will talk to you. Why do you feel your children are not getting what they deserve from you? Would you like to chat on the chat line? It would be easier to carry on a conversation. I know the one constant in life is that things are always changing, so what is making you depressed now could change at any time. Let's talk.
Talk to you.
I think to give up a child so that it can have a better life takes a lot of love. I don't think anyone does this to be mean or selfish. It's the most unselfish thing a person can do. Is this your child? How old?
Doc's talk to me
I do about 15 doctor's and I have at least 10 that do talk to me. Only one is a griper, the rest are real friendly and always tell me nice things, plus call me by name, which is a + in my book.
need a pep talk
I am feeling so rotten about myself and my MTing abilities today.  I got an E-mail from quality control about several errors in a report and complaints from that particular hospital on this one report.  Apparently, I had put she in several spots that should have been he.  I also did not fill out the demographics screen.  I guess I am getting ahead of myself with this produce, produce, produce thing.  I suppose it is time to slow down.  Anyone else had a slap on the wrist and felt horrible and then just feel so unsure of yourself that you just feel like you need to put the keyboard up for a while?
So what do YOU want to talk about?

You should talk about it with them.
Why do families act like idiots after a death regarding the items left behind?
Let's Talk
I've been in this business since 1981.  For many years I felt it was the greatest opportunity I could have ever had with a high school education only. I was trained on-the-job by a teaching hospital.  You know what I mean, the money-making career without the college.  Well, that worked out all and well until a few years ago (or maybe more, I was busy having kids and lost track of my mind...lol) when I noticed that suddenly companies were trying to rip off transcriptionists.  And I don't mean a few, I mean MOST.  In trying to look for a job with benefits, because I got divorced, I was thinking to myself, what the heck happened.....and was also thinking, surely these are just transcriptionists who have been burned.  NOT SO.  The medical Transcriptionist has been lost....we are made to feel as secretaries, time wardens, ESL experts, etc.  I am totally  baffled by it.  BECAUSE, we are professionals, we really are.  How many people do you know could sit down and do what we do?  It is specialized, it should be treated as a profession, yet company after company is offering not much more than 8 cpl.  HELLO???  Are you kidding me???  I should just go get a job at McDonald's.....I am serious, I am so furious right now I can't see straight.  This is pitiful.  I now am truly sorry I even ever entered the transcription profession.  Let's all walk away and see where they are then!!!  Okay, thanks for the vent. I AM SO FRUSTRATED.
Just talk with them
They have probably had to set up other people, I would call and talk with the person that asked me if I was looking for more work and explain to them that you have usually just been on the other end and what you have that you are working with now, am assuming you have the pedal and you download from your large service, well if they are digital then they will just upload and you will go on some site and download your files.  But don't let this opportunity get away from you as when they need someone usually the first warm body that comes through the door is the one that they grab if they can do a half way decent job.  But call and ask questions and do the research on what they are currently doing now.  Good luck, let us know how it goes.
Need to talk to tax guy to see what U can/cant
n
you should probably talk to her,
given the HIPPA laws and what if somehow this ever goes to court (that would be my luck) and you actually have to go? Gone are the days when I typed my own path report because there wasn't anyone else to do it! and my own chest x-ray and mammogram, H&P and op note!
Seeing I talk back to sm
dictators, I'd probably just scream FU back at the computer screen.
You talk about QA being arrogant, BUT
You post all the time and it is very visible how much you are actually arrogant. You have such a terrible attitude and nasty mouth. Even as the abbreviation you used it is uncalled for. Your opinion is NOT the only one that matters. You are one person i would just LOVE to meet in person. I would be the first to put you in your place right then and there!
Do your docs talk 2U?

I have one doctor who, when she wants to correct something or other always says "This is an aside to the typist." ARGH. I feel like I'm in a Shakespeare play or something - don't those have a lot of "asides"? I always want to scream at her "Don't you know I'm not a TYPIST?? I'M A MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST, DAMN IT!!!!" Of course she's 80 or something so I shall forever be "the typist" to her.

I have a resident who always says "For transcriptionist, would you...." to get my attention - but when he was new I thought he was saying "Poor transcriptionist..." I always nodded my head in sad agreement until I realized what he was actually saying....

And then there's the doc who loves to complain about his job to me, sometimes in great detail - "Here I sit, waiting for some x-rays to come in so I can make a buck" and "I cannot believe this hospital."

They crack me up!

docs talk to me
I always get one who says, "uh, secretary, please correct..." and then I have one who always says "oh, operator, could you kindly...." Does he think that because he dictates into a phone it's a telephone operator on the other end or what?
Where do you usually talk about productivity?

I don't see a board for increasing productivity.  I usually just post questions on the main board but think I will get more information if I post questions on the board specifically for productivity.

TIA

Talk to a doctor
Find out what is the downside for YOU, then make your decision from there.  Sounds simple, but I'd hate to have to make that decision.  Godspeed.
Walk your own talk, then.
Why don't YOU take in all that trash if they're all just innocent victims of "the system". It's always someone else's fault, isn't it? You liberals never hold the parasites responsible for any of their own actions or any of the CHOICES they make. It's always the government's fault, or capitalism's fault, or the fault of people with money (you know, the ones who worked hard and EARNED their lifestyle). We're all supposed to keep paying through the nose so a bunch of parasites can breed generation after generation of parasites and no one is allowed to point out the truth. Fine. YOU let them all live with you.
has anyone ever had a recruiter talk down to them - sm

I cannot believe the way this woman spoke to me in such a condescending manner.  She made herself sound so high and mighty, and yet all through the industry I had only heard good things about her.  I applied for a position, was contacted by phone, and she told me that my EXTENSIVE 14 years experience, along with 3 years QA experience was not enough for their company.  But it was the tone that she used!  I am not a sensitive person in any way, but she made me feel like I was inadequate and had no business applying for a job with their company.  When I told her what I made (which I said I could prove on my taxes and pay slips) she balked (?sp) as if I was making it up.

Has anyone else ever been through this?? I do not want to say the name of this person or the company because I do not think it is relevant.

Talk about childish!

Talk shows

I thought about it as I do quite a bit of transcribing different types of seminars but when I saw what they charge people for a transcription of the show I thought boy they must not pay much as it does not cost much to get a transcription of a show, less than $20.  So they must have some type of automated transcription as for a 8 hour seminar I get anywhere from $500 to $750 and for a three day seminar I get close to $2000.  Per line charge.  But is frustrating to do sometimes as the audio is not the greatest at time.

But that was my thoughts on the subject.

Well, talk about job security

This morning, she came in my office and brought me a flyer...

How can a company possibly work for this?  Wonder what the transcriptionists get paid? Would this be outsourced??  I wanted to ask these questions, but our manager doesn't care about anything but the dollar. I've been here 17 years and the work load is overwhelming. So am I threatened, YES! Should I be?

Talk America
I live in North Carolina and cannot find Talk America in my area for $49.95.  Someone else also told me about them.  Where are you?
Please talk with neice

I, too, got pregnant when I was 18 (had baby at 19).  I was whoring around, doing drugs, and making bad life decisions.  I met a guy and 2 weeks later found out I was pregnant.  I told him and we both decided on abortion.  We went to the clinic, paid them $500 dollars.  They did the "initial exam" and set us up for a date to have the abortion.

2 days after my initial evaluation, I was in tears and told "this guy" that I really wanted to have the baby.  He cried and said that he did, too.  We were basically both just going to abort because we thought that is what the other one wanted.

I cry everytime I think about that awful thing that I almost did.  I would never hurt my baby now that she is here, how could I have thought about hurting her when she was completely helpless?

Well, 7 years later, I have a wonderful kindergartener who can read and write (wrote her daddy a letter before school this morning saying he was the greatest dad ever).  This child changed my life.  She means the world to me.  I can't stand it when people say that a child would get in the way.  My child gave me something to live for.

By the way, I was a lucky one.  That guy, is now my husband and we will be celebrating our 5 year anniversery this year :)  We also have a wonderful 2 year old.

Ummm...you need to talk to someone about this!
Why would anyone need this info? That is too strange. I would call a lawyer or another bank and find out about it. Did they SELL you the insurance or what?
