African Grey
I have had an African Grey for about 10 years, but he is about 25 years old. He belonged to my grandmother and she left him to me when she passed away. They are wonderful pets. He is a great talker. He can mimic voices and sounds. He still talks in my grandmothers voice sometimes...
I would definately recommend an African Grey to anyone. The only con that I can really think of is that they can be quite messy. But if you can put up with some mess an African Grey would make a wonderful pet!!
I second that - African Grey
They are sooo amazing. Get one! Let us know!
My African Grey
Chico....

Rings like the telephone. Then in my voice says,
"Hello....yup...yup...uh huh...yes...ok then, talk to you soon...bye!

Too funny!
I breed Timney African Grey parrots. Have a baby now that will be ready early June.

People know not to call me
on Monday nights.  Can't miss a minute of it.  I think it's best show also.  Poor Edgar!
I'm not defensive at all. I think people who call
others fools because they can't appreciate humor or don't like their views are the people who are missing the point and can't see anything but their sorry situation. When you sit in judgement of others from your high horse of course you can't find humor or anything else.  Really get over yourself or crawl back into your imagination where you are queen.
The people who call me from India are AM
ALWAYS polite, agreeable, call me "ma'am", say please and thank you, etc.  They at least attempt to seem concerned with what I need from the company.
ANY MQ SE PEOPLE GET THE PHONE CALL YET?

What is this all about?

Here we go again. You call other people liars because YOU can't do

what we do? That is just not very nice. Think about what you've said!

I do acute care. I wouldn't touch clinic work with a 10-foot pole, because I'd starve. Operative notes only, but for four hospitals in one state and one hospital in another state. I don't usually check my line count every day but I can tell you that I do 150 minutes in 5 hours just nearly every day. Rarely do I work longer than that.

Please be nicer to people who have come here offering to help you. I'm not selling anything and I never was sure the OP was, but every time this subject comes up, people come and try to help, only to be called liars and scoffed at.

I hope I don't get myself banned from the board for this, because I'm telling the truth.

No I don't call people from the internet...sm
Never really thought about it.
Funny how people call you 'racist when you

Ever call people you meet online?

I feel a little weird calling someone that I met online.  Yet several people have left me their phone numbers to call them just to chat or some ask me to IM (instant message) them.  Are they too trusting?  Am I too mistrusting?  It just feels weird to me.  I am on my own.   No kids or anything.  Soon to be 45 years old.  So I guess maybe that comes across in my e-mails that I am lonely and they are just trying to be nice.  However, I would prefer just to leave a message on the message boards like this one or send an e-mail.  I guess I want to know if others are exchanging phone numbers over the internet and IMing people they meet over the internet?  The people I meet are usually people suffering from autoimmune disorders or people in chronic pain.  They are usually responding to a message I left.  I can't do anything about this condition so I try to focus on others and offer whatever words of encouragement I can over the internet to those suffering.

call credit card people immediately
and dispute charge (the back of your bill should give you the procedure on this) WRITE down everything you have done for the record. Yes, you absolutely must contact someone who knows something at hotel.com and be sure you contact the Atty General of your state and the state where hotel.com is headquartered, not to mention the BBB. Hotel.com has just got a load of bad publicity - don't forget to point that out to them. They also need to reimburse you for any charges incurred.

Be sure to keep a paper trail...emails will work. Good luck to you.
People may call repetition of this thread 'boring', but - sm
I think it needs to be repeated over and over again to anyone who will read and/or listen, in order for this truth to finally sink in. Many of us seem to have been brainwashed by the industry's rhetoric about a 'global economy' (i.e., lowering of living standards in the US?), and 'that's just how things are, now - get used to it.') I think the future of MT as a US industry, as opposed to a purely offshore, sweatshop industry, depends on this message getting out there.
I totally agree...how old are we to call other people stupid???
Give me a break...we do not go to school for countless number of years and just because we have to correct a doctor's spelling on certain things, doesn't mean we are smarter than they are...give me a break...if you were expecting to making 75,000 in this field you made the wrong career decision...how about a little bit of respect for a fellow MT...
oh sorry grammar police...but you did call people stupid..
that was not taken out of context
ooh, I know him....got a So African accent?

a bird!
LOL!!
If i had a choice I wouldn't do this guy, but i ALSO know I have it pretty good. No ESL doctors to date for me... but that doesn't ALWAYS mean the English ones are easy!! I have asked him, his partners, and the office manager consistently that he speak LOUDER because I honestly think that's the biggest problem. I have him up full blast and if you put a different doc on at the same level, it blasts my eardrums out! Nothing has changed, but that's why He is the only one to receive blanks in his dictation!! :)
Again, its because you did not properly train him!!
nm
Please know that African Greys do not always talk. sm
There's no guarantee yours will be a talker. As others have said, they can easily outlive humans, so before you get one, please have an agreement with relatives.

Don't know about the molting question, sorry.

Any pet bird lovers out there?

Thinking about getting a parrot, either Amazon or African Grey.  Anyone have experience with either?  Any pros or cons you can share?

I have had smaller birds in the past, i.e. cockatiels, so have some experience, but never have owned a larger bird.

Bird lover to the max!
I am an obessed bird lover!
Started with one cockatiel 7 years ago, fell in love and gradually got three more. I have 2 Australian Bourkes and 3 parakeets. Advice I can give you is get or subscribe to BirdTalk or Birds USA. I know these magazines are not widely available, but if you can, they are a great resource. The thing you have to keep in mind is the time you will have to spend taking care of a larger bird. That is key. Birds, especially the larger ones, require a lot of interaction and attention. I do a lot of reading about birds because I find them fascinating. Avian behavior studies are really only 20 years old, and what is being discovered is fascinating. They are much more intelligent than was previously thought. They now know that birds actually do understand at some point, they understand context. This explains how emotional they can be. Getting a large bird is a commitmentfor life. Birds feel emotion, and a bird can actually die of a broken heart if left alone too long, become destructive, or develop feather picking. It is a commitment one has to think about before getting a large parrot. Also, you may just surf the web for information. There are lots of websites, none of which I can think of right now! Good luck to you!
Bird rescue, etc. (s/m)
Interesting story about the birds! It sounds like you are doing a great favor to a lot of animals. Yes, actually the Queen Bee friend did request that I give back clothing I didn't want to her, but after the fact. I already had my nose a little bit out of joint by then, so felt that I would just put an end to the problem in its entirety by no longer accepting gifts with strings attached.

It is different with animals, though, and I agree with your request to give birds back to you, since the birds have feelings and have already had unstable lives. I got my cat through a cat rescue, and although he is now MY cat, I signed a paper agreeing to return him if I didn't want him (ha! that'll never happen), or couldn't care for him. That info. is actually on his microchip, as well. If I were to suddenly die or something, I would have the peace of mind in knowing that even if he ended up in the animal shelter, one scan of the chip would let them know the cat was to be returned to rescue, and they would actually have someone drive down to get him. Then he would be safe and well-cared-for until they found someone else who would spoil him as much as I do! ;)

I used to do this doctor that had a bird ...

and all you could hear was that flipping bird sqwaking and, excuse the pun, getting its feathers in a bunch.  That thing was loud and "bossy".  It knew a few words and I would hear it say "Hello, bye bye baby."  Ughhh...  It drove me insane because he would be on bright and early dictating from home his surgery patient H&Ps and all you can hear is that bird.  I think I had nightmares for a while about that thing.  It used to always make me want chicken for dinner.

Thankfully I no longer transcribe for him.

If you do your taxes properly, you certainly SHOULD NOT end up paying...
40%.  Obviously if you have no deductions other than the standard, you will pay more, but even with only the standard deduction, you shouldn't be paying 40%.
Autotext not working properly
Does anyone know whay might be wrong with my autotext?  I have several set up in WORD.  I have it setup so when you start entering the text, it will show a balloon popup and you can hit enter or F3 and the entire autotext will populate.  However, this will only work if at the beginning of a new paragraph.  I can't seem to get it to work in the middle of a paragraph after a sentence.????  Any thoughts?  Would appreciate emensely!

IMO, in general, African ESL dictators are the worst....nm
But the worst of all, in my experience, are a few good-ole-boy Americans who just don't care, talk literally faster than the speed of sound, mumble garbled phrases, and deliberately try to make their reports as hard as possible to transcribe.

There is no excuse for this. At least the ESLs have the excuse of a language barrier.
Oops, I forgot the bird flu. nm

So you bird lovers-name some of your favorite
When i got home, my parrot would ask me "being a good bird?" (as though since I had been gone, I may have been naughty).

My next favorite was when he got something especially good to eat, he would say "mmm, yum-yum!". We share spaghettis noodles and race either to the middle!
about the same as killing all birds over the bird flu sometimes...
you have to do what you have to do. If there is mad cow disease, everyone kills cows. If there is bird flu, we kill birds. If there is rabies, we kill dogs. Any epidemic in the making has to be stopped before the epidemic starts. Oh, and the West Nile virus, we kill mosquitos. The only thing with the deer ticks, we aren't forced to kill deer, people do that for sport. lol
Thank you! Glad your husband was properly dx'ed.

Are you kidding - at least Clooney speaks properly.
Matt comes across as being very dumb when he speaks and is apparently odd to boot - remember the incidents where he got caught doing something naked extremely high on pot??? And now, no deodorant?!? Please, up your expectations, ladies! He seems to be a total loser. Now, George, hmmmm! I'll take that. LOL!
Is expanderic working properly for those who have downloaded it?
I had to disable it just to type this message because it keeps deleting characters that I type and adding spaces. Anybody?
Right, they can't depress the brake properly if they have cancer! nm

Buy a Bird Talk USA to read over before deciding

It is an annual issue that discusses all the different species of birds and their quirks and specific needs.  If you do decide on an AG, consider one older than a year or 2 old as they go through a maturity phase during that time and can change personalities or change the object of their affection.  I have a personal preference to Soloman Island Eclectus males.  Like most Indonesian parrots, they prefer not to be touched on the back of the head/neck but with love and tenderness, they can overcome this.  These birds can bond to and love several people at the same time while maintaining the primary bond to their "main human" which an AG may not allow (all birds are individual in this).

Whatever parrot you decide upon, from a parrotlet to a maccaw, treat it as it is a 3 to 4-year-old child.  That is the intelligence and emotional level they function with.  Find out when they reach sexual maturity and be prepared to deal with the sometimes violent mood swings or changes in preference with whom they bond (this is very important especially if you hand feed one).  Rotate the toys every couple of weeks.  Don't be bashful about taking it on walks in the park, to the beach.  Be careful about birds of prey if you let it play on a perch outside.  A varied diet is a must (If it's good for you, it is for them.  If it's bad for you, it's bad for them).  Consider the toxicity of your house plants.  Let them take showers with you.

Okay, I'm addicted to them.  I'll stop now

My friend's bird rang like the phone...
That was so confusing and quite funny. Also, my girlfriend from grade school had a parrot that overheard me say, "I'm going to the bathroom" and when I left the room it said, "Go pee pee, Go pee pee". I missed it, but they had a great laugh!
Yes, Yes! Sue the OWNER of the plastic pool because they did not secure it properly. Now it was a
deadly object due to THEIR negligence! Just think of the $$$.
Wireless router is not working properly. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not. This morning I had
plug my main computer directly into the phone company's DSL box.  No settings are changed, ever, when this happens.  Anyone have any ideas?
Oops, guess it didn't attach properly..sm

The kids' "holiday" programs at school were full of African and
Hanukkah music, but there wasn't an African or Jewish person in the gymnasium. Everything else was nondenominational. What I want to know is why the minorities have the majority vote? Shouldn't there be an equal amount of Christmas music?
Hmm, guess I shouldn't have included bird and humans. nm

Grey
I was fuzzy on the Ellis Grey situation too. Apparently back in the day, she and chief had something. Must have been in the 60s, took the low/safe road and married a professor or something but she hated him. When she was admitted, chief visited her and it was like her Alzheimer's went away for a minute. I missed the first few episodes because I was like, who can top ER, but I am hooked. I have not been so hooked on a show since I was in college (can you say "I pity the fool")
Grey's
I haven't seen it yet.  I taped it though--will watch tomorrow.  I watched part of first episode and wasn't really interested.  Accidentally taped the whole thing after taping Desparate Housewives a couple of months ago.  Decided to watch the whole episode that night and now I watch every one!  Love it!  Can't wait to watch it on tape!
Grey
Meredith wound up with her hand in the guy, bomb had not gone off. EMT had run out of the room Derek was told that Dr. Grey's was now the hand holding the bomb which seemed to be a shock to him, Makes you wonder what will happen next week.. Bailey's husband was in surgery following his accident. Derek performing surgery, patient's brain exposed and he would not leave him. Derek's wife taking care of Bailey.
Grey's Anatomy is the Best!!!

LOVE IT!!!

Grey's Encore
Just saw where ABC is airing an encore of Sunday's episode.  Yay!  I missed the last part.  It comes on here tonight at 9:30 EST.
Grey's Anatomy
I am completely obsessed with that show. I just can't believe they're putting it on tonight at the same time as 24! Sorry Jack Bauer, but I'll have to miss you tonight.
Grey's Anatomy

On July 6th, the show is supposed to start on Thursday nights.  Anybody know if this will be reruns or new episodes?  I thought that new episodes wouldn't come on until the fall.  I love that show!!!!
